Bereavement wipes out everything

Since I canât see a thread about the Deputy PM and Housing Minister, Angela Rayner I am starting one. đ
All the main newspapers are headlining this story but most have a paywall and this one doesnât.
Thereâs no doubt she has come far from her humble beginnings but this demonstrates to me that she is very out of touch with people.

PoliticsNerd Just for context Rishi Sunak and his wife together own four houses spread across the UK and the US, worth an estimated ÂŁ15 Mn. I imagine this was true when he was PM.
Many people invest excess money in homes. Well done them.
I'm curious to see proof of AR's home transactions.
My mind can be changed -- by facts. If I wanted to see your proof of your home transactions, would that be OK Norah?
There are proper ways of doing this, via the Standards and Intererest Committee. Allegations should be reported to them, not a newspaper. If that were the right way to do it should be possible to report our taxes, etc, in a newspaper, with no redress if they get it wrong. That is how Angela Raynor is being treated.
You, by being part of a democracy, agree to power being held by everyone through an elected government.I did say proof. I was wrong. I'd like to read of a proper review.
"The House of Commons Committee on Standards reviews the work of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, examining arrangements for the Register of Members' Financial Interests."
It'll happen Norah. The press know they only have so much time to wind things up so they did, and some will always get swept along with it.

I heard an expert on these matters on r4 say AR has not broken the law. So it appears there are no âdodgy dealings.â
Let us then say she has manipulated the law, with the aid of expensive tax consultants, to its absolute limit.
She has used all those dodges and expensive advisors to do what we often hear Labour politicians loudly deplore when it was done by members of other parties, who can afford these expensive advisors.
What so many people are failing to understand is that Angela Rayners, quite legal behaviour, if you are wealthy enough for these legal manouvres to be of advantage, simply stinks of hypocrisy.
Here is a party that is very fast to condemn everyone else, and present themselves as the party of purity. yet we know that well off members, including the Prime Minister, have happily accepted free clothings from a millionaire party supporter and now we have the Deputy Prime Minister doing high jumps and pirouettes to teeter along the high wire between tax avoidance and evasion. Behaviour that again the Labour party has condemend in others.
In other words members of this current government are as mercenary and on the make as any Conservative party Minister or MP, and as quick and as willing to make a fast buck at the expense of the ordinary voter any day.
Or as the song so graphically puts it
The working class can kiss my rs, I've got the foremans' job at last
I will go along with manipulating the law with the help of expensive advice, but she wonât be alone.
Plenty of people with money are able to do that and itâs well known that in terms of non payment of taxes and so on the wealthy cost the country far more by avoidance of taxes etc than the relative few who cheat on their benefits,
I heard the oddest thing about the City of London - it is the money laundering capital of the world and donât knock it , itâs making us rich. Itâs very difficult to keep up with the timesâŠ..We seem to be living in an alternative universe?
Tax evasion is illegal Monica but HMRC will challenge "avoidance" if they think it is illegal and they usually win their case. tbh I don't have an issue with anyone using tax avoidance as long as they pay the tax that is properly due. We've given lots of money away to our children to avoid IHT, there will still be IHT to pay when we die but we are quite happy to do that as we want to keep sufficient money so we can pay for care if we need it. AR is only doing what any sensible person would do

As I posted on another thread, one man who owns hotels housing asylum seekers is earning millions from Government contracts but he is a non-dom for tax purposes. I understand the tax liability of those with non-dom status is supposed to have changed this year but will it work? His hotels have housed asylum seekers for at least ten years.
All it says is that there is nothing to find despite deep, desperate digging by the Tory press. So just make a headline as most readers donât bother to investigate further.

Goodness!
Most sensible people are not in that position, perhaps they're just mugs.

I agree, sensible people avoid and pay everything required.
I'll wait to read proper review.

Yes plenty of people do, no doubts on that, but this is a Labour minister.Added to that she has had harsh things to say about second home owners hoovering up properties and making it hard for young people to get houses where they were brought up.
I quite agree. It is not what she has done but what she has done after waging campaigns and demonising other people doing exactly what she is doing now. power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely, what a disgraceful crew this government is.

There is plenty to find. Rank hypocrisy, for one and a perfect example of the 'Do as I say, not as I do' principle on the other.
I can think of nothing more pathetic than the 'it is just the Conservataive press out to get Labour' argument, well of course it is. I would hardly expect the Labour press to be showing up the shenanigans of a Labour government than I would expect the Conservative press to be dissing the Conservatives. that is why we have a free press with papers aligned politically with different party. Just to make sure each party is examined forensically by paers that do not trust them.
This government has been wrapped in sleeze from day one. they are no better than the government they followed.

Allira I would never use the word "mugs" to describe people, it's a horrible, disparaging expression. However, anyone who has some cash that they don't need can, if they wish, pass on some money quite legally. you don't need to use an expensive financial advisor, the rules are extremely simple and easy to follow and I'm sure your children (and anyone else you wish to help) will appreciate your generosity. MIL helped our daughter financially through med school, it built a bond between them which was really very special, our daughter wrote to her regularly and spent a lot of time with her when she was home from uni. Mil aged 99 insisted on going to the graduation, it was a long journey and the hottest day of the year but to see her delight in her grand daughter becoming a doctor is a very special memory. I've learned a lot from that, once you have enough money to live, the rest should be used to help others and so we do, but we ensure we have enough left to look after our own needs........what remains when we die, can go to the state!
Just to clarify.. When I said I will go along with manipulating, I meant I know it happens , but I condemn it.
My tax has always been deducted at source, no opportunity to manipulate.
Starmer has spoken and says AR is prevented from discussing the situation due to a âcourt orderâ.
Bit of a coincidence that!
Iâm another who believes if we are able to live comfortably we use the rest to help others. I mostly help my children and immediate family but also donate regularly to charity or specific fund rsisers

You didn't get it, did you!
I'll include us (DH and me) in the 'mugs' description - most normal, sensible people who pay their way, pay their taxes, don't evade them, don't see other people off, are the ones who don't become millionaires.
We're the mugs while others get rich at our expense.
It's not horrible or disparaging - mugs perhaps but we can hold our heads up.
Mugs - as in mugged - by businesses, financial institutions, financial advisers etc.
Allira sorry I didn't get it. We're like you, we pay our taxes and are very honest about our financial affairs. We're very fortunate as we do have extra cash but on the other hand we're not extravagant people, don't run flash cars, don't need expensive holidays or tbh do anything other than live a nice comfortable life but we are not "mugs" and neither are we rich, however, I'm very happy to give away any money we don't need and we do. What we don't give to family we give to charities so they can benefit from extra money from the government, it seems like a really good thing to do!
I think I'm just a bit đĄ about the multi-millionaire hotel owner contracted to house asylum seekers and who is a non-dom. Possibly all his tax affairs are in order and above board but sometimes I feel we are being taken for mugs.
Has any other MP had their financial affairs scrutinised in such depth as Rayner?
Several, Maybee, investigated by police and some ending up in court and some receiving a prison sentence.

We feel the same. Live comfortably, pay taxes owed, give quite generously to our children, charity and Church.
I'd imagine AR may have given a home to her AC, maybe not?
Logical, imo.
