“Migrants are more important than residents" A statement that the Labour party will live to regret?

I think so.
It was their appeal statement in Court. To overturn the previous decision about housing migrants in that hotel in Epping it was their salvo.

Well I think it’s just put a nail in their coffin.

What do you think?

woodenspoon Fri 29-Aug-25 18:04:35

Are you a lawyer?

Whitewavemark2 Fri 29-Aug-25 18:05:45

We’ve had masked people hanging flags on the seafront. The council will swiftly remove them.

Patriots all 😄😄

I think not.

woodenspoon Fri 29-Aug-25 18:08:58

That’s happening all over.

Nobody in the real world wants sex offenders, drug dealers, criminals, members of terrorist groups, economic migrants holed up in taxpayer funded hotels in their communities

woodenspoon how do you know that the asylum seekers awaiting their applications to be processed are not genuine?

How do you know that they fit your descriptions above?

Are you asking me? No I'm not.

Are you?

woodenspoon Fri 29-Aug-25 18:12:11

No I am not. But your comment made me wonder. Of course, like you, I get my information from many sources 😊 so that we get a true picture. Wouldn’t you agree.

Because many have been in court LizzieDrip and convicted. Some are in court this week. You surely know that.

What a shame. Hopefully there’ll be plenty more going up to replace them.

We're treading on very dangerous ground when people start claiming that judges are politically motivated.

Dangerous in what way?
I can think of several ways I guess, Which way are you meaning?

Governments have to abide by the law as it stands. they are at liberty to change it, but until they do so (if they do so) the law stands.

That is something I never quite understand.
Does that mean that a previous judge[where there is an overturn] is incompetent in some way?

When it comes to the law I get my information from lawyers, not the right wing media. Who (the media), as the-is thread is demonstrating, have a tendency to lie.

woodenspoon you’re clearly more knowledgeable about the current status of asylum seekers than I am. I’m interested in the word ‘many’.

Do you have data / sources to enlighten me?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 29-Aug-25 18:36:18

Gerrymandering Jenrick reopened the Bell Hotel for use by ayslum seekers in 2023. No wonder Labour won the election. It was “anyone but Tory” really. People thinking “surely it can’t be worse”.

Oh well, Dame Angela Eagle promises hotels won’t be used by 2029.

Many? How many asylum seekers have been in court in the last week and convicted? How many? Links please!

Meanwhile, just to prove I can use Google ... according to Essex Police, in the last year in Epping and Ongar, there were 1300 investigated cases of violence and sexual offences. How come each one of them didn't provoke a protest?

And don't forget that over 40% of those child- and family- loving people who were charged in Southport last year have records for domestic abuse.

Speaking logically, there was no other option. There is no alternative accommodation immediately available. I do realise that logic is out of the window on threads like this of course though.

Tories made a mess for 14 years.
However Labour (in opposition) also had 14 years … to come up with a workable solution as they vetoed Rwanda. (Which even Germany is pondering - outsourcing to other countries now the situation has escalated exponentially).

Clean, BASIC accommodation ought to be provided.
A doctor, nurse & dentist available.
Cut the ‘pull factor’ as Macron told us months ago.

Being in opposition does not enable a party to physically prepare accommodation for migrants though, there are no magic wands.
There are also no easy answers regarding stopping migrants getting to the UK, and deporting them if they do. Farage’s plan has been roundly fact checked and proven to be unworkable now, so despite the hopes of their supporters they will be unable to deliver either. Complex issues do not have easy solutions.

Does anybody have a link to the actual words used in the defence?

All I can find is what Conservative Chris Philp has claimed.

I would like to see this too.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 29-Aug-25 18:55:40

True Casdon.

In any regard until the boats are stopped (Macron, I agree with you we are too soft) then demand week on week outstrips available accommodation.

It’s a real mess isn’t it?

Not here in Brighton. Don’t you remember how the people of Brighton dealt with the idiots last year as they were doing the rounds trying to whip up anti-immigrant trouble?

They are a tolerant liberal lot in Brighton. But the sort you see around places like that hotel are not tolerated or welcome.

Jane43 Fri 29-Aug-25 19:03:58

This is all I can find, it is from GB News but the words differ considerably from what you have quoted Fried Green Tomatoes

Home Office lawyers have argued the rights of asylum seekers are more important than those of Epping council, as the Court of Appeal considers The Bell Hotel injunction.

I think you should post a link to the words you use in your post heading.

Unfortunately, the words FGT has quoted just don't happen to be available.

Meanwhile, something which is factual:

In just one month - June 2025 - there were 27 reported cases of violence and sexual offences in Epping town itself. Apparently, that's below the national average. Why aren't all these brave patriots out protecting their women and children whenever a violent or sexual crime is reported?

A couple of things.

I don’t think we can call these places ‘hotels’,

A lot of the current shenanigans can be blamed on Brexit. We were able to send people back but can’t now. Nigel Fromage has a hell of a lot to answer for. He is antagonising and winding up people with little education. All their woes are down to immigrants, allegedly. The government are doing their best after 14 years of Tory rule. Fromage is doing his best to spoil anything Labour might have done.

Incidentally I sent a complaint email to the BBC concerning their bias towards Reform who, just remind everyone, have 4 seats. Just 4. They lead practically every news bulletin and there is the LibDems, another minority party with 72 seats, who can barely get a word in. Apparently there is a petition going round calling for an early GE. Jeez. Don’t these people know how democracy works. I recommend listening to the Rest is Politics podcast to get a wider, more balanced view on what is going on at the moment.

As I understand it - the hotel needs a change of use application to house migrants.

If it doesn't have this how can the judge rule it can stay open?
