Afghan earthquake, Taliban rescuers cannot rescue women.

Something that had never occurred to me in the aftermath of the earthquake.

Afghan women were left to die in the wake of the country’s 6.6 magnitude earthquake because of Taliban rules forbidding unrelated men from having contact with them, The Telegraph has been told.
The quake killed thousands of people and devastated homes across the country’s mountainous areas on Sunday, with two powerful aftershocks on Friday raising fears of more death and destruction.
Survivors say the Taliban’s draconian restrictions – as much as the tremors – have cost Afghan women their lives.
It took rescuers 20 hours to reach Devagarh village on Monday in one of the worst-hit areas. When they did arrive, the women hid behind the broken walls of their houses after seeing the all-male rescue team, one rescuer told The Telegraph.
“We can’t speak with the women or try to contact them because it’s prohibited. Touching even a dead woman will have consequences,” he said, seeking anonymity.

This is beyond sad, the cultural differences are so enormous.

I read this with despair.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 06-Sept-25 10:17:28

There was an item on Women’s Hour this week in a similar vein.

This is the 21st century, unbelievably wickedness, it really is heartbreaking.

Oreo Sat 06-Sept-25 10:20:47

Islamist extremism, that’s the sort of thing you get.We shouldn’t be sending any aid there whatsoever.

Allira Sat 06-Sept-25 10:21:17

This is unbelievable in the 21st century. Such wickedness.

How can these men invoke such fear in their population?

Galaxy Sat 06-Sept-25 10:22:28

It's a hell hole.

Aveline Sat 06-Sept-25 10:25:19

Missing female nurses and medics too. It makes me boil with rage. Those poor women. The Taleban are beyond evil.

Rosie51 Sat 06-Sept-25 10:30:15

Given that females are no longer allowed an education, let alone medical training, the female population of Afghanistan will be drastically and horrifically impacted in the coming years. Where is the world's outrage? Where are Amnesty International, the UN, the hordes protesting in London?

Casdon Sat 06-Sept-25 10:36:00

That is truly terrible. It’s hard to comprehend that people would put religion over saving the life of one of their own people.

Maremia Sat 06-Sept-25 10:37:05

Think there are Amnesty International campaigns about Afghanistan. You could check out their website.

Galaxy Sat 06-Sept-25 10:39:44

I wouldn't rely on Amnesty to stand up for women.

AGAA4 Sat 06-Sept-25 10:41:12

So sad and unnecessary.

Maremia Sat 06-Sept-25 10:42:00

Rosie51, sadly, any hordes protesting in London, will be protesting about refugees coming from Afghanistan.

Maremia Sat 06-Sept-25 10:43:19

Why not Galaxy? Women very frequently appear in their campaigns. Women from all over the world.

Rosie51 Sat 06-Sept-25 10:44:12

www.amnesty.org.uk/urgent-actions?

This is the Amnesty International UK urgent actions page. I see no mention of women's rights in Afghanistan on this front page, so not that urgent or important then. The first mention of Afghanistan is towards the bottom of the page about a male journalist.

I think their stance on both prostitution and self id indicates a complete lack of understanding of women's rights why wonen can be vulnerable.

Galaxy Sat 06-Sept-25 10:49:13

Excuse the spelling errors!

Maremia Sat 06-Sept-25 11:13:10

I haven't been following that aspect Galaxy. Prostitution and ID, are they confusing the issues?

Doodledog Sat 06-Sept-25 11:15:42

I supported AA for many years, but their stance on women’s rights made me cancel my DD and open one with Freedom From Torture instead.

My heart goes out to the women of Afghanistan. It’s impossible to comprehend what they are going through, isn’t it?

Maremia Sat 06-Sept-25 11:16:47

For Rosie51, I have just googled 'organisations that can help women in Afghanistan'. AI lists at least 8. You can further research them, and then decide which one/s you would like to support.
Also Malala heads an organisation listed further down.

Maremia Sat 06-Sept-25 11:18:51

'Freedom from Torture'. Will look that up, thanks.
Also there was a thread, maybe last year, about supporting women in Afghanistan.
Not so easy to do now that many aid agencies have left.

Maremia Sat 06-Sept-25 11:25:18

One way to support these women is as Oreo suggests, to not send money into their system.
And yet, didn't Farage say that when he becomes Prime Minister, he will send refugees, from wherever to, Afghanistan, and will pay the Taliban government for this accommodation?

Galaxy Sat 06-Sept-25 11:50:38

Sorry I wasn't clear there, I fundamentally disagree with their position on prostitution and their position on Self ID. Both indicate a lack of understanding of women's rights and why they may be vulnerable.
But I dont want to distract too mych from the thread. The women of Afghanistan have basically been left to suffer this horror.
I will have a look at Freedom from torture, thanks .

I feel the only way I can mentally process some dangerous ethnic or religious practices is to regard the people who do those practices as mentally unstabilised by their beliefs.

It's no help to victims such as women and girls to regard the Taliban simply as bad people.
