Peter Mandelson - Epstein . Should Starmer sack him?

In 2008, Epstein pleaded guilty to soliciting sec from girls as yiung as 14. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison
Mandelson continued his friendship/business dealings with Epstein. The Telegraph reports when business secretary, Mandelson brokered a deal with Epstein after the conviction for child sex offences.
I heard PM today apologising, wishing he’d never met Epstein. He went on to apologise to the victims, he hadn’t noticed abuse of girls possibly because he’s gay and was there with his partner.
My view? How was he appointed? I knew about his links with Epstein which were always going to return to haunt him

Casdon

Mandelson has been up front about his friendship with Mandelson and visits to his properties all along though FriedGreenTomatoes2, so that was not something new to Starmer.
As a gay man, he would have been less suspicious in Epstein’s circles, presumably. I think the issue now is the nature of the birthday message he sent him throws a different light on their relationship to what he had revealed previously. As that birthday messages book was in the Epstein vaults, it’s unlikely that MI5 knew the exact nature of it, surely?

Being a gay man does not make you blind to young underage girls around powerful men.

Casdon if that is PM’s excuse he is more of a snake than I have always thought.

He has already been sacked twice from political positions.

I don’t understand why being a gay man would mean you didn’t notice the ever present young females. Or that you would continue a business and personal relationship with a man convicted of soliciting sex from 14 year olds.

By your friends shall we judge you,

Galaxy, yes your a political genius

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 10-Sept-25 20:41:01

Someone (somewhere) was heard to say “it’s like Rotherham/Rochdale for the elites”.
Sickening.

Casdon Wed 10-Sept-25 20:41:30

I meant only that Mandelson was unlikely to be involved in sexual liaisons with them GrannyGravy13, or at least, I haven’t heard anything in the messages or other documents disclosed so far to say he was,
Please don’t think I’m trying to defend anybody, I’m not, just trying to understand what was happening and why.

Galaxy Wed 10-Sept-25 20:43:48

Thanks Iam64, I could run the country if I could only be bothered to get off the sofa.
If the latest reports in the Sun are true it is very bad. Mandelson advising him to fight for early release.

Galaxy

I knew without one moment of doubt that the Mandelson appointment would end in disaster. I think i said so on the last thread we had on him.
I didn't need to consult MI5 or see any emails.
Either I am a political genius or more likely this was entirely predictable.

This!

Casdon Wed 10-Sept-25 20:51:04

I’m attaching yesterday’s thread too, because I think it adds to the discussion, particularly the CNN analysis.

Daily mail has emails from PM to Epstein before his conviction in 2008. “Fight for early release “
“Your friends stay with you and love your”
“Everything can be turned into an opportunity”
“I think the world of you and I feel hopeless and furious about what has happened “
“I can still barely understand it. It just couldn’t happen in Britain. You have to be incredibly resilient , fight for early release and be philosophical about it as much as you can “”

“The whole thing has been years of torture and now you have to show the world how big a person you are and how strong “

P.M setting out his total lack of understanding of the abuse of minors by adult men. Or does he simply take the view that 14 year olds can give consent
He has to go

Iam64 Wed 10-Sept-25 20:56:43

Casdon, apologies. I didn’t find your .OP so started this. I’d have continued yours if I’d found it.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 10-Sept-25 20:59:26

“This would never happen in Britain”

I wonder why not? I think I know. Sickening. He has to go.

Casdon Wed 10-Sept-25 21:01:19

Don’t worry Iam64, it was a broader post, not only about Mandelson , which is the current pressing issue for the UK.

The whole saga is going to run and run long after Mandelson has gone I’m sure, the whole thing makes me feel ill at the thought.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 10-Sept-25 21:01:57

I wonder what the abused young victims of Epstein would be thinking if they are aware of and read or seen Mandelson’s sickening creepy words of support for his best pal.

This is the UK’s US Ambassador folks.

I feel a dreadful amount of shame that this sicko represents me and our country

My heart goes out to those victims, every one of them. Just awful for them.

winterwhite Wed 10-Sept-25 21:06:05

When I wrote that I thought it plausible that Mandelson didn’t know about the young girls I was assuming that he met Epstein on occasions when they weren’t around, which itself seemed likely enough since Mandelson is gay. If that’s not so I take it back.

But I still dislike the fact that the driver behind all this furore is the aim of embarrassing Starmer. Epstein has been dead for several years. Mandelson is not interested in young girls. Too much is being made of too little.

I don’t mean that I think Mandelson a good choice for the job in the first place, but for quite different reasons.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 10-Sept-25 21:07:12

Labour said Farage was on the side of Savile for opposing the online safety act.

Now we have the same Labour Party defending a member who was literally a paedophile’s best mate.

Iam64 Wed 10-Sept-25 21:08:20

I’ve now emailed Keir Starmer - yes I know 🙈. I’ve reminded him and said I believe his repeated commitment to safeguarding women and girls. Mandelson saying as a gay man he wouldn’t have noticed what was happening - after his 2008 conviction means he has to go, sack him

Casdon Wed 10-Sept-25 21:08:42

What do you think about Trump’s involvement FriedGreenTomatoes2, do you think he should continue as president, given his contribution to the birthday book was just as vile? I think there is plenty more to come out about all those involved yet.

I couldn’t judge him , I am not gay , not a man

Casdon Wed 10-Sept-25 21:13:36

I wasn’t putting it forward as an excuse AnnieBach, we don’t know what actually happened, it was pure speculation. What I was musing was whether in fact MI5 would know how involved Mandelson actually was - which has not come out so far.

Anniebach Wed 10-Sept-25 21:30:51

Apologies Casdon, I misread the post

No it’s not about embarrassing Starmer

It’s about an Ambassador of the U.K. admitting to being best pals with a convicted sex offender.

Just because the current POTUS is a convicted felon, doesn’t mean that we (UK) should stoop to his standards.

fancythat Wed 10-Sept-25 21:51:52

I was listening today that it will be difficult for Starmer to sack Mandelson as he appears in the same “diary” as Trump, and that would be criticising Trump as well.

And other posts on this thread.

Does Starmer "back" everyone?

fancythat Wed 10-Sept-25 21:53:39

Well, I suppose he did at the reshuffle.

Spinnaker Wed 10-Sept-25 23:42:15

No, Starmer manages to embarrass himself all on his own, he doesn't need help from anyone else 😂

I seem to remember there had been a couple of scandals about him before, or at least some very dubious behaviour. He always came across as a shifty - and very smarmy sort of character.

He should never have been appointed and he should go.

It made me laugh when he said, with a pained expression on his face, that he wishes he'd never met Epstein - I bet he does!
