Well I’m a Starmer supporter, but he is beset by problems at home and internationally. Some of his own making such as the Winter Fuel Allowance debacle. He seems to be dealing well with Trump, but that is always a volatile situation.

I’m not sure anyone else would do any better.

The Tories had five prime ministers in fourteen years, and the turnover increased with time. But this is only Starmer’s second year in office and he has a huge four hundred seat majority.

The Reform Party is undoubtedly a major threat in electoral terms. Other threads here point out that migration looms large in the media, but perhaps there are more important issues for most of us.

Only because the electorate wouldn’t vote for a left of centre party. Even though the very people that need one the most are the least likely to vote for one confused.

MayBee70 you cannot blame the press for Lord Mandelson.

I think the problem is that the current PM and his cabinet have no idea where the party sits

It’s not a Labour Party as such, it seems to be floundering at home. Rachel Reeves is hell bent on continuing austerity, dreading the Autumn budget.

On the positive, the PM appears to be more successful on the world stage than at home

True. But the press pick up on everything that can to discredit Starmer. Remember donkey gate?

Imo Starmer needed someone as politically savvy and wily as Mandelson to deal with Trump. Also someone that might have a bit of influence over him for various reasons hmm. Of course, if we were still in the EU we could have used them to do our negotiating and also wouldn’t be so sickeningly dependent on America for trade deals.

Tony Blair?

Mojack26 Mon 15-Sept-25 16:32:02

He only does well with Trump because he massages and plays to his ego and because he handed over invitation from the King for a state visit! Nothing to do with him being an excellent PM, just being politic and doing what he's told to do..... but I kinda get it, if that's what it takes to get a deal

Oh come on, Boris had it 10 times worse than KS.

MaizieD Mon 15-Sept-25 16:55:11

That's because he was, not just ten times, but immeasurably worse than Starmer.

You can’t be serious Primrose53!

“Historians will be baffled by the readiness of Britain’s largest media organisations to lick Johnson’s boots for so long, and will surely look for an explanation”

Yes, and isn't Johnson back under scrutiny because of misuse of post government funds?

eazybee Mon 15-Sept-25 17:10:32

I think the problem is this time that the current PM and the Party have no idea.

They are the Labour Party.
You elected them.

What choice does he have? We depend on America now sad. And yet Obama was criticised when he said if we left the EU we couldn’t depend on trade deals with America.

It is Keir Starmer and his predilection for unsuitable appointments that are under discussion.

I haven’t got that on my conscious, thank goodness 😅

Farage was on BBC news for ages at lunch time, holding court about the deflection.
Starmer needs to get his communication strategy worked out. Did he just employ an ex-Sun editor to the team?

😹 Yes, but…

sparkynan Mon 15-Sept-25 17:19:59

I don’t care what political party is in power, I just want the next PM to be completely honest, and realise, the county cannot keep living beyond its means! The more the rich are taxed the more of them leave the uk! I would like them to follow Australia’s rules on immigration. The uk are giving millions of aid money away to other ‘poor’ countries, this needs to be looked into! I have retired this year aged 66, I feel sorry for people who have to wait until 67.68 and god forbid, 70 to get their state pension.

Maremia Mon 15-Sept-25 17:24:19

I don't think we have stats to prove that the more you tax the rich, and I mean the super rich, the more of them leave the UK. People keep putting that forward as a reason to not so do.
Any of you have the stats?
Agree with you about the rise of pension ages.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 15-Sept-25 17:27:58

I know personally three high earners who have left the U.K. for Dubai, since Labour have come to power.

And talking of Dubai, doesn't that Patriot Richard Tice live there part of the time?

They are putting themselves and their families first, I cannot blame them for that.

Dubai wouldn’t be my choice.

Overseas aid has been reduced. Also some of it is used towards migrants that arrive here. Overseas aid is also a very clever way of gaining soft power over countries. China uses it a lot.
