Human beings tend to be predictable in how they will fight against oppression.

Agreed. This is how these terrorist/freedom fighter groups spring up.

Maremia

Are you permitted to rephrase your comment foxie, and repost?

Don't know but tbh I won't bother. fwiw I've never asked for anyone's post to be deleted, when I see something that I think is questionable I leave it as I think it's actually more effective to see what someone has posted rather than to see a deletion but clearly someone doesn't take that approach as two posts were deleted in quick succession! Anyway time to move on!

Menachem Begin? I feel another google search coming on.

Maremia Sun 21-Sept-25 12:25:13

I agree with you there, about everyone being able to see the whole discussion, but obv not everyone is happy with that. Off on another google search.

This -

“TERRORISM
The main terrorist groups were Irgun Zvai Leumi (National Military Organisation) - ultimately led by future Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin - and an even more militant organisation, Lohamey Heruth Israel (Fighters for the Freedom of Israel) or LHI.”

From a google search but there are many other pieces that will say the same thing.

Maremia Sun 21-Sept-25 12:42:09

Mmmmmm. Thanks.
Okay I remember, pos another thread, folk were worried that Hamas terrorists might be part of future negotiations, and they shouldn't be because of the killings and so on. And I agree.
But here we have an example of someone from Israel's own history, who was a terrorist but became Prime Minister.
There is a precedent. Gosh.

lixy Sun 21-Sept-25 14:15:10

Maremia, there are many precedents - David Ben Gurion allied upon a Zionist group to ‘rise against England’ in the late 1930’s, Ariel Sharon led raids into the West Bank and Gaza in the 1950’s and for the Palestinians Yasser Arafat was the epitome of a ‘freedom fighter’.
If anyone who has fought for their convictions on either side is not to be allowed to negotiate then there will never be any hope of any kind of peace process.

foxie48 Sun 21-Sept-25 14:24:47

I can think of three previous Israeli PMs who were heavily involved in terrorism, Ben-Gurian, Shamir, and Begin. I think I'm correct in saying that none of them would have been able to visit Britain because they were wanted for murder but please correct me if you know different.

Babs03 Sun 21-Sept-25 14:34:02

Indeed lixy, Sinn Fein now have a part to play in mainstream politics, and of course Mandela leader of the ANC was famously released from prison and made leader of South Africa.

Babs03 Sun 21-Sept-25 14:38:01

In fact I believe is anti semitic to insist that Jews have always been victims, and therefore not like the rest of the human race who have risen up when oppressed or become oppressors themselves.

Anniebach Sun 21-Sept-25 16:07:25

Sinn Fein and ANC did not rape, did not sexually abuse little ones taken from their cribs. Did not lock families in rooms and set fire. Did not take hostages. Did not take dead bodies back
to their hideouts to prevent them being buried.

I have to agree with Netanyahu that the UK is absurd.

The UK won't be bothered about what Netanyahu thinks.

ronib Sun 21-Sept-25 16:17:01

Yes you are right - Starmer is really only worried about his own position?

AGAA4 Sun 21-Sept-25 16:24:26

As is Netanyahu.

I believe that if the roles were reversed and an Israeli population were oppressed and treated like second class citizens in their own land land for decades by Palestinians that they would probably be troublesome as well.
Indeed when the Brits occupied what was then Palestine in the 1940s a Jewish group of terrorists would kill British soldiers and their families in a most heinous manner.
Menachem Begin was one such terrorist, though I imagine Israelis prefer to call him a freedom fighter.

My friends mother was a member of the Stern gang.
The odd twist was that she married a British soldier. One of the very people ( British troops) she wanted to kill.
Loves a funny thing, isn’t it?

I think you probably agree with Netanyahu on quite a few things.

foxie48 Sun 21-Sept-25 16:58:30

There's a headline in today's Washington Post:
"Democrats rapidly shift on Israel amid Gaza assault, evidence of famine"
"A growing number of prominent Democrats are calling for cutting off sales of offensive weapons to Israel, part of a broad shift in opinion on Israel in the party."

It would appear that the support that the US usually gives to Israel has shifted dramatically in the last two months. I really hope this means that the US will start to cut back on the military aid that they are giving Israel and that Trump starts to put proper pressure on Netanyahu to call a ceasefire. I live in hope.

ronib Sun 21-Sept-25 16:58:50

I don’t agree with the continuing loss of life Babs03. Not sure that any number of statements will change that?

Babs03 Sun 21-Sept-25 17:09:50

Good story Petra a bit like the Protestants who would marry Catholics during the troubles. Love will find a way thank goodness.

Starmer has formally announced that the U.K. recognises the State of Palestine.

Of course it won’t do anything to change what is happening in Gaza, but together with other countries that were once allies doing this it does increase Israel’s isolation in the world and confirm its reputation as a pariah state which I imagine will bother Israelis.
And with Arab states seeking other allies rather than the US I think Trump will have to soon sit up and take notice.

Smileless2012 Sun 21-Sept-25 17:27:31

I think that Trump will have to soon sit up and take notice I like to think so Babs but as long as there's a possibility of making money, I'm not holding my breath.

Well there is that.
No matter how bad other presidents of the US have been I know that none would have allowed this to continue.
Netanyahu must be as thrilled as Putin that Trump is president, he is every megalomaniac’s dream come true.
