Owing to last-minute legal challenges and protests from charities.

Seems it’s Starmer’s turn now to sign a deal that literally ‘hasn’t got off the ground’.

Yet I hear there’s an incoming flight to the UK from France so Macron must be pleased.

Sorry, I derailed things in a comment or two last evening, but then most posters have probably long gone from the thread which they considered a non-starter anyway!

I still consider the issue very important because the gauche, (meaning awkward, not left!), glitch rather smashed any hope that this new scheme might be smooth sailing and effective. I will, however, continue to watch with interest.

By the way, 4 people have been sent back to France so far, I can't find anything about the 4 the UK has supposed to have received in return?

escaped a family of three including one child have arrived in exchange for the deportees, they have been admitted on a three month visa.

Thanks.
Yes, the news came out in France yesterday afternoon. The child is apparently Un enfant en bas âge very young, probably under the age of two.

Excellent!

It’s good to hear that this little family have been given the opportunity to live a safe, secure life in the UK.

I welcome them to my country and hope they settle in well.

How many duck's arses are you familiar with Oreo? (post upthread.)
Oooooooo! It's not you stealing the swans?

Oreo Thu 25-Sept-25 13:39:06

It’s just a saying Maremia don’t get too excited.

Over 1,000 migrants arrived on dinghies today ! (8/10/2025).

It is beyond ridiculous and Labour are not doing a thing about it.

It’s never going to happen.
Our PM, Home Secretary, a lot of the Judiciary (Judge Bean) are Fabians.
They believe in open borders, it is all part of a greater plan.

Sarnia Thu 09-Oct-25 08:15:03

Did anyone expect this to be a success?
Tony Abbott, an Australian ex-PM, suggests we follow the way they tackled migrants attempting to enter a sovereign state through the back door. Keep them in detention which does not mean hotels and as soon as weather conditions are favourable and in daylight hours send them back on the boats they arrived in with enough fuel, food and water.
It was Australia's solution and they cocked a deaf ear to criticism from other countries and organisations. They put their country first.

Maremia Thu 09-Oct-25 08:22:37

Honestly GNs if we had just rejected BREXIT, we could have continued with the low numbers crossing at that time, when we still had the right and the procedures to return them.

Oreo Thu 09-Oct-25 09:20:45

Not true Maremia we sent only small numbers back.
In any case, all European countries have problems now with the sheer amount of immigrants entering their countries and they, or many of them are in the EU.

StripeyGran Thu 09-Oct-25 10:07:02

Maybe we could turn this on its' head and see it as a positive?

Couldn't migrants be " processed" ( horrible word) quickly and those who pass the necessary checks be allowed to work?

How about massive investment on the Home Office for a start?

I don't think there is anything to gain by churning out figures or promoting the idea that all displaced people are scroungers and rapists.

Maremia Thu 09-Oct-25 10:30:49

Before BREXIT, we had the right to send some of these poor folk back.
Don't have that now.

Maremia Thu 09-Oct-25 10:34:13

Yes, Stripey, spend the money on that. Train and employ young people, to a high set of the required skills. Could become a good career path, especially when some previously good careers will be consumed by AI.
Turn a negative into a positive.

If only we had a government that were strong enough to do that.

First of all we are all processed every time we transit through an airport.
Billions of people are being processed every second through photo recognition. So there’s nothing wrong with the word.

How about massive investment on the home office
Hundreds of millions of pounds have been spent in the past 2/3 years. I know this because my daughter worked on the new computer system.

How do you process an applicant who claims to come from say Ethiopia a country with a very low rate of birth registration. Added to that Ethiopia doesn’t have the best internet connection. Then you have Ethiopians claiming to Eritreans because they’ve been told we are more sympathetic to Eritreans.
How and where would you start to process just this one applicant.

StripeyGran Thu 09-Oct-25 11:42:28

Just a personal thing, the word processed conjurs up certain images for me.

I am not a government minister petra, so sorry I can't answer your question. I am accutely aware of the complexities. I am also aware that thousands of people are languishing in ( so called) Hotels and they would much rather be at work.

“The Dublin III Regulation enabled the UK to return some asylum seekers to EU Member States without considering their asylum claims. It also provided a legal route for reuniting separated asylum-seeking family members in the UK. The Regulation will no longer apply in the UK from the end of this year.”
another Brexit benefit sad. And yet the very people that voted for it are the ones that seem to be complaining that the numbers are increasing confused.

Yes, Stripey, spend the money on that. Train and employ young people, to a high set of the required skills. Could become a good career path, especially when some previously good careers will be consumed by AI.
Turn a negative into a positive.

Many of those arriving by dinghy have no intention of ever working because of our generous benefits. They are told how to go about it and can run rings around our benefits system.

Since they have, in the main, destroyed their paperwork, how can we know who they really are?

They don't get generous benefits!

You have no idea what their intentions are.

Eritreans and Ethiopians speak different languages for a start. Interviews with native speakers can sort them out.

Fabians' being part of some great conspiracy is ludicrous.

Evidence?

Is it only those who voted for Brexit who are complaining?

Implies that all those who voted against Brexit are standing with open arms by the shores of the English Channel?

What about those who didn’t bother to vote?

I have seen videos of them saying how wonderful our benefits are and why they want to come here.

The poster mentioned training and employing them which implies they will be granted asylum and will stay here. Therefore they will get plenty of benefits.
