It seems the increasing rumours and claims that Donald Trump is slipping further into uncontrollable behaviour, due to dementia, would seem to have more than a grain of truth.
Remember the Peter Sellers film "Dr Strangelove" or the Michael Caine film "Billion Dollar Brain"? Both films revolved around mentally unbalanced maniacs using military might to take over the world.
Is there nobody in Washington who dares to restrain Trump?

Venezuela air attack
(408 Posts)US have attacked Venezuela with missiles. This is unforgivable
AGAA4
The Venezuelan president accuses Trump of wanting to seize their resources, oil and minerals. This is what the attacks are about he says.
Probably very true.
Iran is in possession of massive oil reserves, Venezuela is sitting on even more. Greenland is a fund of precious mineral reserves.
The US is a hothouse of greedy commercialism and rabid political idiots - Trump being at the top of the pyramid.
For anyone who has relatives with Dementia, Trump has been increasingly exhibiting the symptoms of that ever degenerating disease. He will not get better.
I am fascinated by the idea that Venezuela has drug cartels which had put in place the newly deposed president. Strange form of democracy?
Also Trump has taken on the drug barons as a way of keeping illegal drugs out of his country. What is wrong with that?
Ronib do you think Trump should send American law enforcers into every country that does not have a democratically elected leader? If so, at what point would this become a concern for you?
If Trump wants to stop illegal drugs coming into the US he has picked the wrong country. Trump may say it's about drugs but this is about regime change, plain and simple, and linked to Venezuela's huge oil reserves.
Thought that most of the drugs came from Columbia?
Will they be next on the hit list?
Ah, but do they have oil?
It may well be linked to Venezuelan oil reserves plus the ruling drugs cartels. I have little sympathy for anyone making huge profits from selling drugs. It has to be an improvement for Venezuela and if it’s such an oil rich country, why is it killing off the young worldwide with its evil drug trade?

I was thinking Dr Strangelove as well.
Where are the human rights in Trumps actions?
It really is time and for Europe in particular to recognise that we must begin to de-couple our systems away from the USA, including defence, monetary, AI and related systems etc, and begin to get full independence from a country which is now acting as a colonialist authoritarian towards South America in particular, but its tentacles spread far and wide.
We must absolutely make clear that no one in Europe will tolerate a single USA foot in Greenland.
This statement from the Spanish Foreign Ministry seems to hit the right note.
"Spain calls for de-escalation and moderation, and for action to be conducted in accordance with international law and the principles of the UN charter.
In this regard, Spain is prepared to offer its good offices to achieve a peaceful and negotiated solution to the current crisis.
Spain reiterates that it has not recognised the results of the 28 July 2024 elections and has always supported initiatives to achieve a democratic solution for Venezuela. It also reiterates that it has welcomed, and will continue to welcome, tens of thousands of Venezuelans who have had to leave their country for political reasons and that it is prepared to assist in the search for a democratic, negotiated, and peaceful solution for the country."

We simply cannot and won’t do that, not now and not ever I should think.
The US is Europe’s bulwark against China, Russia and Iran and associated countries.
Trump won’t be President there forever.
Oreo
Trump won’t be President there forever.
He won't but he can inflict a lot of damage on his own and other countries while he is in power.

The majority of drugs coming through Venezuela come to Europe. They don’t produce drugs.
Well said Whitewavemark2.
I have been reading, - in particular because of Trump possibly losing control of Congress this year - that this is really his last year of real strength and that he may well take a lot of outrageous actions throughout this year.
This could well be the start.
I have heard that also, WWM.
This could be an 'interesting' year.

Given up on that idea.
Well for decades.
It has been shown up as oh so weak.
Even the @group@ of the willing[speech marks not working], or whatever it was called, didnt work?
If say 5 countires in Europe grouped together, it might work??
Not 32 or whatever the number is now.
The Left in particular did not used to @like@ @defence@. Or war[who does on that one].
Will take a long time to get back to where they were, even say 30 years ago.

I heard this morning[tv] lots of drugs grown on venezuela/columbian border.
so the rule of law, can be totally disregarded, and only the mighty will have a say in our world?
Not a world I want to live in.
Next will be China and Taiwan
And Russia into another European country.
Maybe a bit more research needs doing newbie commenting.
Last year, Venezuela's leader of the opposition very bravely went into hiding and managed to receive her Nobel Peace Prize
Machado said she's "absolutely" supportive of President Trump's strategy in the country amid his administration's increased pressure campaign against the regime of President Nicolás Maduro.
"We, the Venezuelan people, are very grateful to him and to his administration, because I believe he is a champion of freedom in this hemisphere," Machado said of Mr. Trump on "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan."
Read up about it.
The US has a history of interfering with the regimes of other countries. This site details 8 since 1950

Trump is not the first President to do this
Sadly Whitewave I think we are witnessing the end of democracy as we have known it and the rise of despotism throughout the world, including the UK.
I've spoken to my son this morning who has been in touch with friends in Venezuela. They are all delighted that Maduro is gone! He was almost universally disliked in Venezuela. However, Trump's actions are not the way to handle this.
As for trying to prevent drugs entering a country, because of a pervasive drug problem, it should be considered why a country develops this problem in the first place.
It usually suggests socioeconomic distress and inequality.
