Yet another escapee joins Reform’s home for fed up Tories, time to change the name to Conform??

Why don’t these defections trigger by-elections?

Primrose53 Tue 27-Jan-26 14:49:10

Regarding “most people I know think” ……. I am sure many of us don’t just talk to people of their own age. I have young neighbours, a young hairdresser (about 30) a younger footcare woman in her late 40s) I do speak to people my age, I have a window cleaner in his 50s, knitting friends from 25-85ish, my own children, nieces and nephews in their 30s and 40s. So a wide age range. I can honestly say they are all not happy with the way the country is at the moment and are very interested in Reform. It regularly comes up in conversation. The main objections to the current govt are uncontrolled immigration, massive problems in the NHS and lack of dentists.

Not quite sure that a mini-Trump is the answer.

Babamaman Tue 27-Jan-26 15:20:08

Starmer is totally blind at what is going on? What a load of self indulging po to sting bunch of losers we have in our politicians across the board!
Not an honest soul amongst them

'Out of interest, the petition calling for automatic by-elections when sitting MPs change parties has passed the 100,000 signatures needed for a debate on it.'
Did not know of this petition but think it's a very good idea

Maremia Tue 27-Jan-26 16:16:46

Well then, Reform will solve the problems of the NHS by moving us to a USA medical system.

Maremia Tue 27-Jan-26 16:19:10

Wasn't Suella B the Home Secretary at one time and therefor responsible for immigration? How well did she do then?
What makes you think her skills have improved?

Good.
Will look for this petition.
When voters vote in an MP they vote democratically for the party that MP is a member of. If the MP switches allegiance voters should have the right to call for a by-election , otherwise is undemocratic.

Absolutely agree

I would be happy to pay for a vastly improved service. There is nothing so important as health.

Susieq62 Tue 27-Jan-26 17:13:35

Falling star I agree totally with your last comments!
Suella has a lot to answer for in her time in the Tory Party! Brexit caused the influx of boats and increased numbers crossing the channel so a big thank you to those who voted LEAVE!!
I asked my librarian, with whom I work , why she would vote Reform and she had no answer apart from following her parents’ views! A long time to go before a GE , anything could happen 🤞🤞

The NHS would not be safe in the hands of Reform. The US has the most expensive system in the world and gets much poorer outcomes than pretty much every western country. 600K Americans are bankrupted by medical bills every year and two thirds of all personal bankruptcies are related to medical costs. The cost of providing oneself with medical insurance is a huge expense unless you are working for a company that provides you with cover. We do not want a system like this in the UK.

The Good Law Project has an interesting item on Wes Streeting links to private healthcare providers.

They are/were his major funders…

As I stated already, Primrose - the phrase " Most people I know think..." is not necessarily statistically relevant.
Like you, I have conversations with a wide range of people throughout the week, and, my experiences are different from yours.
Neither of us is wrong, but it would be unwise to extrapolate from either your perspective, or mine.

We have family in the US and there is a ceiling when it comes to health insurance so though insurance a person pays for will cover certain things but if you are unlucky enough to get cancer or a serious illness that requires repeated hospital procedures/treatment, you will hit a ceiling after which your insurance won’t cover it anymore. That happened with an aunt dying of bladder cancer, whose immediate family had to refinance their house and sell one of their cars in order to pay the bills.

Didn’t mean to include the ‘but’ in the 4th sentence.

Matt Goodwin now a candidate for the by election! A nasty right wing anti immigrant facist is being lauded by Reform , wow!!!

GG13 I'm not completely against using the private sector but I'd be very much against using a system like they have in the US. Many European countries have a hybrid system and I'm open to making changes as long as the poorest and most vulnerable are cared for properly.

I am definitely against the USA system.

I just find it odd that a Labour Health Minister has been financed by private healthcare providers/companies.

Maremia Tue 27-Jan-26 18:24:48

Before you wish for a medical service you would pay for check out how many USA citizens go bankrupt back year because of medical bills.

Maremia Tue 27-Jan-26 18:27:23

You already can pay for private procedures. Think it is £14,000 for a hip op.

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 27-Jan-26 18:35:36

I wonder how old school Tories feel about these defections? Are they relieved, or anxious?

Getting rid of the far right wing of the party can only be good 👍🏻

MartavTaurus Tue 27-Jan-26 19:09:38

I'm wondering whether my old MP a few years back, Iain Duncan Smith (Woodford Green), will be next? As a former Conservative leader, he might not feel the need to throw his weight around in a different party. He actually serves his constituents quite well.
