Should The King’s visit to America be postponed?

The visit is due sometime next month. America, at Trump’s instigation, is involved in a war seen by much of the world, as illegal. Mt Trump has been extremely rude and provocative to European leaders, especially to Keir Starmer.
If the visit goes ahead, I fear Mr T is so narcissistic, he’d see it as our Monarchy supporting him.
It’s been suggested the King could say his doctors advised against the visit. The decision though, should rest with the government, rather than expose the King to the possibility of being political
What to do?

I think the visit should be postponed indefinitely. We don't have a 'special relationship' with America and haven't had for a long time.

King Charles is the head of our armed forces; when you insult them, you insult him and they swear their allegiance to him, not the POTUS.

👏👏👏

Oh aren't these opinions typically British. On the one hand....on the other hand...did Winston Churchill display this kind of feeble attitude? Of course he didn't! He kept his own counsel and made his decisions based on his strategy for dealing with a raging megalomaniac. There is no feasible reason why our gentle, precious King should fuel that monster's ego and utter madness. We are not dealing here with a man who has ANY scruples. Do you honestly think that our King will even for a moment turn Trump away from his terrible behaviour? Trump is a convicted felon, a rapist, misogynist and a liar. He started this current mayhem merely to distract attention from his involvement with Epstein. Because of that, innocent men, women and children are dying, great swathes of homes and properties are being raised to the ground, the atmosphere we are trying to save is being polluted by bombs and explosions.
King Charles going to visit will be read by Trump as a personal compliment and a sanction of his behaviour...that is how narcissists think. For pity's sake, get real!

Perhaps because most of us are?

I think if you read the thread, many of us realise this.

Charles is not that gentle - he is well able to hold his own and diplomatically put Trump back in his box if he starts to criticise the UK and our Armed Services. However, we are realistic enough to know that he will not attempt to change Trump's mind about this war as that is not his job to do that. He is Head of State but not a political Head of State.

A definite no from me, I did not agree with all that fuss when he visited us, he would take any interaction as an opportunity to stroke his already huge ego. He started this war let him finish it, he is realising he's on his own.Our position should only be one of defence.

Do sixandahalf and butterandjam know what pouring oil on troubled waters means?😉

Yes of course.

Do you misunderstand the role of Monarch?

NotSpaghetti Thu 19-Mar-26 07:48:01

Just heard the news that it IS going ahead.

Iam64 Thu 19-Mar-26 07:55:40

And yet, the news from the war and the US gets worse by the day.
Trump calling Gavin Newsom (sp?)the president of the US, saying dumb, has learning difficulties as he is dyslexic. The president clearly unfit for office

NotSpaghetti Thu 19-Mar-26 08:04:01

I heard that!
Thought I'd misheard but I heard it more than once so obviously he dis really say it!

I thought it would.
These sort of occasions are minutely planned well ahead of time and barring illness of KC or DT it was bound to go ahead.
The last thing the UK needs is any more falling out with the US.
If posters don’t like the phrase poring oil on troubled waters then how about the visit being a soothing balm.

Revoking the visit would certainly be seen as a snub.Things are bad between Starmer and Trump at the moment so the planned visit next month should mollify DT.

That's exactly why Charles won't go.

Yes I read that. Let’s hope the King can steer clear of Trump’s drivel and have an itinerary that keeps a meeting with this idiot to the absolute minimum. And just hope that Trump doesn’t say the King is no Queen Elizabeth.
From what Trump has been saying about how great he is he probs thinks he should be a King.

Talk about the pot calling the kettle Iam. Trump's not fit for a civilised society, let alone as POTUS.

AGAA4 Thu 19-Mar-26 09:02:39

Hopefully Trump will refrain from insulting the UK while King Charles is there. If not I'm sure he will handle the situation with politeness and diplomacy making Trump look like the ignoramus that he is.

I sincerely hope senior Royal aides go to see Trump before the visit to go through a few protocols. Namely that he tries to behave like a normal human being.

DT has had plenty of interaction with the RF and it seemed to go well, am sure this time won’t be much different.KC will smooth over any ruffled feathers.

merlotgran Thu 19-Mar-26 09:19:17

The king isn’t going to discuss the Middle East, at least not in front of the cameras. He’ll be attending functions to celebrate America’s independence. Quite what he’ll make of that remains to be seen.

Maybe we’re the ones who should be celebrating. 😂

I dint think the King should go. How about sending ex Prince Andrew? He probably knows Trump via their mutual friend...

Andrew would be a much better choice and Trump can keep him.

Oreo Thu 19-Mar-26 09:22:44

Maybe KC will throw a cup of tea into Boston Harbour?😁

GrannyGravy13 Thu 19-Mar-26 09:26:32

One of my favourite phrases is

When others go low, I go high

I am sure our King, will act and speak impeccably, which will highlight the current POTUS’s shortfalls…

or did Someone (The Palace, Starmer, Charles) pressed the MUTE button on public speculation?

Any "Frightfully Sorry King Can't Make It " announcement will be last minute, to lend credibility to whatever Utterly Diplomatic Side Step they're working on.

Oreo Thu 19-Mar-26 09:30:41

If you’re right about that happening butterandjam I’ll buy you a doughnut 🍩 if not you can buy me one.

"Newscum" is Trump's nickname for the governor.

"Honestly, I'm all for people with learning disabilities, but not for my president. I don't want, I think a president should not have learning disabilities, OK? And I know it's highly controversial to say such a horrible thing."

He added: "The President of the United States, Gavin Newscum, admitted that he has learning disabilities, dyslexia. Everything about him is dumb."

Quite unbelievable.
And the irony? Beyond ironic.

Shelflife Thu 19-Mar-26 10:12:29

I suspect the visit will go ahead , but I sincerely hope it does ' nt !
