Professor Jason Arday - plagiarism etc

Yet another seemingly Walter Mitty character but this guy has gone far seemingly unchallenged …… until now.

Reminds me of The Emperor’s New Clothes story. šŸ˜‰
His claims are absolutely laughable.

The story is in all the newspapers and channels but am linking Wiki as whichever link is added, some people will ridicule it.

Cafnas claims against Arday are of little comparative importance and will be duly investigated. The amount of press attention is disproportionate.

No it is not disproportionate.
Cambridge University publicised Arday as their 'poster boy', the youngest ever black Professor, I believe, accompanied by distinctive photographs hard to ignore.
For whatever reason investigations into Arday's work have revealed considerable discrepancies, particularly in his PHD thesis, but also unproven claims to other posts held in Africa and USA, work published and charitable enterprises.

Anyone who has completed a degree will know that warnings about plagiarism are stressed from the first essay, and the importance placed on correct citation of referencing of sources emphasised. Arday has offered interviews stating that he "should be held accountable for the mistakes I’ve madeā€, but attributes them to inadequate supervision and his autism and learning disabilities. He has also claimed that he is a victim of a ā€œracially motivatedā€ campaign to oust him from his Cambridge professorship and has become a ā€œlightning rodā€ for criticism for diversity initiatives in higher education." (T.H.E.)
To become a Cambridge Professor is a considerable achievement and imparts high academic status.
To discover there are considerable discrepancies in work submitted and claims made about their causes is obviously a cause for concern, and has little to do with Arday's ethnicity, more with his abilities.

.

And I just wonder who is paying the fees to Carter-Ruck, who are known to charge at least four times the rate of standard legal practices - @ (c) £400ph plus.

Mmm.

Hands up, I don't personally know whether any of these accusations are true, but if I was a betting lady I would put money on there being something wrong.
Yes students commit plagiarism, but it doesn't usually get them a Cambridge uni chair.

I dislike the complaint that this is bad for his mental health - anyone, Paula Venables, David Kelly, anyone in the public eye who is accused of misconduct, or bears some responsibility for things going wrong, it is bad for their mental health. Not just people with autism. And yet, if you don't have this diagnosis no-one says stop it, it's bullying.

Many autistic people would have found being on Q Time etc & the demands of a high-profile job far too stressful. He coped with that, so, like anyone else in his situation, he has to try to cope with the fall-out.

Failure to attribute is a common mistake in the first year of a Bachelor degree. It would be a serious concern by the final year of a first degree.

It is unbelievable that anyone could attain the post of Professor whilst lacking the academic rigour to attribute his sources. Just that lack alone would be sufficient to debar anyone from a high academic post.

His position is untenable regardless of any other factors. There are standards that colleagues and students should be able to expect from those teaching and supervising.

All very concerning how easily he has manipulated the system over the years.

This is what bothers me the most.

That, and the 10,000 signatures backing him up!

As I said. The university should have done due diligence, but they didn't. The problem is entirely their fault.

Prof Jason Arday has resigned from the University of Cambridge after The Telegraph revealed he falsely claimed to have published a book.

In a letter online, Prof Arday said he was resigning ā€œwith immediate effectā€ from his position at the university and Jesus College citing ā€œunrelenting level of public scrutiny ā€.

The announcement came hours after the university announced it was investigating him following new information his ā€œacademic qualifications and honorary appointments ā€œ

A product of the woke society where no one dare challenge anyone!

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 05-Aug-26 21:01:45

He’s still in denial - blaming the public scrutiny rather than the fact that he’s a fraud.

You don't have to scrutinise thousands of threads to find out what David Latchman was accused of and whether GNs mentioned it and whether GN's were or were not around at the time.

Just enter a simple search in the GN search engine and no results whatsoever come up.

The remark Oreo picked up on I made that "I see racism in everything"

Actually followed Oreo saying I quote

"Or do they operate a tick box diversity programme there?

A clear reference to race diversity issues. As does any mention of ""it should be on merit only" as in no diversity policies in the selection process.

Galaxy Wed 05-Aug-26 21:56:54

I will talk about anything i like. This issue impacts on institutions and values that i care about in particular journalism and the police. I couldn't care less what motives people think I have.

Sarnia Wed 05-Aug-26 22:20:09

Jumping before he is pushed. The University should still continue with their investigations as I doubt this is the last we hear of him.

Wyllow3 Wed 05-Aug-26 22:21:38

Well I think we all have that right, other wise there would be no discussion

My personal objection above was only to the use of that particular phrase " Using the race card" "Using the Mental health Card" and apart from using it when it is inaccurate and only hurts, has the problem of lumping groups of people together and not seeing them as a series of individuals.

Wyllow3 Wed 05-Aug-26 22:22:21

And I cant even recall atm who did use it upthread anyway just noted its use.

Wyllow3 Wed 05-Aug-26 22:28:09

Ah, just followed your lead there Sarnia and read up on he has resigned.

For the best I think.

They can reappoint someone in to the post and any needful investigations continue. Separate the achievements from whatever is found.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 05-Aug-26 22:28:20

Crikey Willow bet you’ve got us all scrambling back to see what we wrote.
Or what someone else did.

But hang on a minute.
Cliches like ā€˜the race card’ one, exist for a reason.

Think about it.

Perhaps because people here are interested in commenting on plagiarism they had nothing to say about David Katchman who has never been accused of plagiarism.

Why did you pick this Jewish Professor to bring forward in a discussion on plagiarism, Wyllow?

You must have had a reason that wasn’t connected to the topic under discussion since that topic has no connection to him.šŸ¤”

JenniRen Wed 05-Aug-26 22:33:58

Latchman's case was rather different in that it was established that he did not actually fabricate the data himself or even knew this was being carried out by members of staff at his laboratory. However, he was reckless and sloppy, thus facilitating the misconduct of others resulting in the published research lacking integrity.

That is rather different from Arday although both examples could have serious impact on other people.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 05-Aug-26 22:34:08

I found who used the phrase ā€˜the race card’ pretty easily. Not far into the thread.

But that’s not really the point here.

It’s the description Professor James has used all by his own big self.

As you were Wyllow.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 05-Aug-26 22:37:39

Darn autocorrect.
* Ja when I type those letters suggests someone known to me and automatically inserts it, unless I correct it. Which obviously I didn’t.

Should have previewed!

Wyllow3 Wed 05-Aug-26 22:44:28

I've just been researching in answer to FGT "why does it matter using "the race card" or theMH card.

I agree Latchman (not Katchman) isnt an ideal example (there were many others when I googled and btw none have been raised either as I have entered in the GN search engine) as he oversaw a great deal of fraud and knew it was happening although not directly taking part)

As regards using the race or MH card:

"Phrases like "using the race card" or a "mental health card" are objectionable because they dismiss real suffering as a manipulative trick. They treat serious social and psychological issues as game pieces used only to win an argument or dodge blame, rather than acknowledging genuine discrimination or illness"

"Dismissing Real Experiences

Invalidation: They claim a person's serious concern is fake or dishonest.

Silencing: They stop open talks on unfair treatment by shaming the victim.

Generalising: They assume a complex, painful reality is just a cheap excuse"

"Undermining Support Systems

Stigma: Calling a mental health struggle a "card" makes people hide their pain.

Distrust: Labeling valid complaints stops institutions from fixing real bias.

Affecting Social Behavior

Creating Stigma: Labeling people with dismissive phrases dehumanises them and reduces empathy.

Reinforcing Bias: Subtle word choices can quietly lock in stereotypes about race, gender, and class

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 05-Aug-26 22:47:12

Wyllow with respect, I don’t think we need a lecture on this. Word salad at best really.

JenniRen Wed 05-Aug-26 22:47:32

There are several Black, Asian and other ethnic minority Professors at Cambridge, presumably all just getting on with their jobs in a professional manner.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 05-Aug-26 22:54:35

No shame or contrition in his resignation statement at all - bizarre.

Lathyrus3 Wed 05-Aug-26 22:59:53

ā€œHe oversaw a great deal of fraud *and knew it was happening*ā€

That was not the finding of the investigation Wyllow as you must know since you chose to put forward this case.

He was censured for poor procedures in his lab that allowed the fraudulent research to take place but the investigation exonerated him from any direct involvement or knowledge.

Given your knowledge of this case I wonder why you have chosen to post a false report of the fundings.

A retraction of your statement should be made promptly. And perhaps an explanation of why you chose to make it.
