Yes, Nigel has won the by-election with approximately 1,000 more votes this time than in the 2024 election, according to ITV breakfast news…

I entirely agree that Farage is disliked for many reasons by centrist, right and left leaning parties and voters.

I also agree that Farage is fundamentally dishonest. I also agree that decent people exist in centrist, left leaning and right leaning parties.

Personally I do not place Farage in a decent politician category. I do not believe he primarily seeks to serve with the behaviours and values set out in the Nolan Principles of Public Office.

I view him more as self serving.

LemonJam Fri 14-Aug-26 16:15:56

I have never seen an action from Farage that has served his constituents or the country well.

Feel free to correct me anyone if I am wrong and not aware of anything.

Considering people go around on this site saying "we will not report a poster", or "I wont report", well someone clearly does, as there are a lot of deletions. Daily.

There are people who say they won't report but there are some who have said they will. It's up to the individual.

I don't know why it's supposed to be a badge of honour not to report. IMO it snowballs -a few posts overstep the mark and it encourages others. It happened to me recently. I didn't report some vitriolic personal attack posts and it emboldened others . So I reported, they were deleted and it's stopped.. HQ takes a dim view of posters trying to deter reporting as they made clear in a recent long running saga. Some posters were calling for all reports to be attributed to the reporter If BlueBelle had said 'you are a Hitler copycat' it would be reportable but calling NF that is just a fact. Whoever I've bee deleted I would say that in 9/10 cases I've agreed with the deletion.

Excellent post Casdon

Obviously political views have a big part to play in people’s feelings about any politician, but for the majority, agree with them or not, there is a degree of respect for their commitment to their cause and their intentions

I quite agree. In that vein, though I was totally opposed to Margaret Thatcher's ideology, I do believe she was totally committed to it, heart and soul, in a way that earned respect from some of her opponents, even if grudgingly given.

Farage is fundamentally dishonest, and that’s what people don’t like.

Yes, this.

There may be a lot of deletions, and it can be annoying when you miss the comment, but there are a lot of GNs, and new ones all the time.

LemonJam - It remains to be seen how it performs at the next GE- but current polls evidence if there was a GE called today Reform UK would not win.

I agree Reform would probably not win a GE but they play a very important role in politics because we need balance, and the better they do the more Labour (and the Conservatives) are kept on their toes.

The government has rowed in a different direction many times in the past because of something Farage has pushed for. For someone who was not even an MP he has had huge influence and that is why left wingers hate him. And my goodness, when they hate they really do hate. You only have to take a peek at any Reform thread on here to see vile name calling and much spitting of venom. I guess they want the whole world to be a left wing paradise of rainbows and unicorns with all the nasty Reformers gone, just gone.

Sorry to disagree, but Reform and Restore add zero to balance in Parliament. (In my opinion)

Firstly, we have balance, we have left, right and centralised representation already in Parliament plus a few Independents.

What balance does a far right (or indeed far left) party give?

Secondly, you do have to actually turn up in Parliament to give this “balance” (which I believe already exists)

Cossy Fri 14-Aug-26 16:47:27

Btw way, it’s not just us “woke lefties” who despise Farage and Reform, I think you’ll find Tories/Lib Dems/Greens also have a pretty low opinion of him and his ilk.

LemonJam Fri 14-Aug-26 16:47:43

I'm also in agreement that Reform and Restore between them add zero balance in Parliament.

Maremia Fri 14-Aug-26 16:52:21

Just looked up the meaning of 'woke'.
Google says 'woke' means being aware of unfairness, discrimination and injustice in society.

Please don’t hold your breath.

I’m still waiting for someone, anyone, to explain in detail what is so appealing about Farage, Lowe and their parties,

Other than the easily disputed comment that Farage “says it how it is” and “says what everyone is thinking”

I’ll be honest, I don’t know what these two sentences even mean grin

Yes, that is precisely what it means, which is what makes it even the more ironic that to some “a woke leftie” is an insult. grin

I entirely agree that Farage is disliked for many reasons by centrist, right and left leaning parties and voters.

Unfortunately, there's an assumption that criticism of him comes solely from the Left. And it persists on here.

Galaxy Fri 14-Aug-26 17:03:13

Words change though as we are always being told, if I was called woke I would be deeply offended, I associate it with authoritarianism, deeply misogynistic beliefs ( men are women, sex work is work etc) I could go on.

LemonJam Fri 14-Aug-26 17:04:12

I'm not holding my breath that any poster is able to set out how Farage has actually served his constituency or the country well 🤷‍♀️

Farage "says how it is" and 'what everyone is thinking'- really ? He has not actually said how it is with France that responded to his Operation Fortress proposal a firm NO. Farage has not responded to what is everyone actually thinking- ie how will Operation Forest actually work in practice. He has not said what so many are thinking- ie is Reform planning to breach international maritime law? Is it planning to breach the 1951 Refugee Convention law? I wish he would actually address and respond to what so many are actually thinking instead of avoiding press scrutiny and questions of late!

Well if Farage says how it is and what everyone's thinking how does that explain why Reform UK only won 5 contested constituencies of the well over 600 constituencies it contested at the last General Election and retuned only 5 MPs to Westminster? The voters clearly preferred what other prospective MPs were saying in abundance.

I, personally, would never report a post unless it was a personal vile insult directed towards myself, or any other Gransnetter on here.

Personal insults are unecessary and rude and hurtful and we are all intelligent and knowledgable enough to debate and disagree with respect.

We are all entitled to hold different views to each other and to express them here.

The only time it truly frustrates me is when people present their opinion as a fact.

Facts are easily verified and often have credible evidence.

I would describe myself as in the centre. I have voted centre right and centre left, though usually centre left. I don’t think left wing politics exists in our political landscape unless it is in the centre. Is a long time since we had a truly left wing government. So I don’t know who all these lefties are who people keep taking about, and I very much dislike Farage but am not a leftie. Whatever that is.

LemonJam Fri 14-Aug-26 17:07:54

Agree Dickens 17.00. There is another prevailing assumption that any posters who criticise Farage's actions, statements or unclear, uncosted policy proposals, e.g Operation Fortress are "bleeding heart liberals".

MaizieD Fri 14-Aug-26 17:08:45

I’m very puzzled as to how a discussion of reporting has got into this thread?

LemonJam Fri 14-Aug-26 17:09:14

I would also describe myself as centrist and have been a floating voter- but these assumptions persist.

That’s your prerogative.

The word or phrase actually (I believe) originates from the early 20th century within African/American culture.

AI

“The term "woke" originated in African-American English (AAE) in the first half of the 20th century. It meant being socially and politically aware, specifically alert to racial prejudice, discrimination, and systemic injustice.“

Its origins can be tracked to people becoming aware or “awake” to the things above.

I’m really not understanding how anyone can find this in any way offensive?

Cossy Fri 14-Aug-26 17:11:26

I’m centre left. I have voted both Labour and Lib Dem’s.

Currently I’m veering more to Labour, BUT if the Greens had a decent, experienced MP as their leader I’d penalty veer more towards them.

Tuliptree Fri 14-Aug-26 17:11:28

I amplified it but basically its all BB's fault ad her little Hitler copy cat grin
