"The Metropolitan Police is carrying out a criminal investigation into allegations Reform UK broke the law in relation to foreign funding, following a broadcast by Channel 4 News last week."

I didn't watch the programme but I will now as it was recommended on the Rest is Politics as shining a light on how Reform conducts it's business.

It’s interesting actually, these very middle class women who are protesting madly against asylum seekers being housed near their pretty little village. They have a Liberal Democrat MP, who I’m assuming a lot of them voted for.
Aren’t liberals supposed ro be lovely people who welcome asylum seekers?
Don’t they sneer at reform voters?

A massive case of NIMBY ism if ever there was one.

Where will Reform UK be housing asylum seekers. Does Reform UK have a different magic wand?

Reform isn't going to house asylum seekers.

It's going to stand on the white cliffs of Dover, wave its magic wand and they will all be whisked back to their country of origin. Not even set foot on our hallowed white shores.

LemonJam Sat 12-Sept-26 15:48:15

Even Reform UK knows that won't work 😅 Surprise, surprise- Reform UK has no magic wand! Reform UK plans to house asylum seekers solely in Green Party areas! Trusty google AI Overview Kadinsky as you suggest:

Reform UK plans to open new migrant detention centres to hold up to 24,000 people in areas that vote for the Green Party.

Key Detention and Housing Proposals

Green-Voting Areas Reform UK pledged to build removal and detention centres specifically in areas that elect Green Party councillors or MPs, while excluding areas represented by Reform.
Detention Capacity The party aims to detain up to 24,000 people within 18 months under a proposed Mass Deportation Detention Act and a new agency called the UK Deportation Command.
Crackdown on Local Accommodation Reform UK opposes the use of local houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) and hotels for asylum seekers, vowing to use local council powers to block such placements in areas they control.

LemonJam Sat 12-Sept-26 15:51:08

Reform voters who happen to be living in areas where the Green Party wins the local vote will be forewarned at least. The Labour Party were also open in their manifesto they would seek to stop housing asylum seekers in hotels and seek to use previous barracks etc.

I think it might have been entrapment if the Police had posed as donors in order to get evidence of them breaking the rules.

But investigative journalism uses "undercover" as a legitimate way of exposing public interest stories. The police can look at it & decide that it looks like something that warrants a criminal investigation, although the media evidence might not be admissable in a court of law.

LemonJam Sat 12-Sept-26 16:56:12

At the moment the Met Police Special Enquiry team is being folded into the pre existing Met enquiry already underway into other alleged dodgy donations to Reform UK. The detectives are in process of securing un redacted film footage relating to the broadcast. The Met is liaising with both the Electoral Commission and Crown Prosecution Service. The Electoral Commission has already gone on record stating the Channel 4 news report included "serious allegations of wrongdoing...it is right that these are properly and thoroughly investigated by the police".

From this it is reasonable to infer therefore that the Electoral Commission has necessarily advised the police that the allegations, if proven, are in breach of specific electoral law- Political Parties Elections and Referendums Act 2000. That is if the breach does not meet the threshold of illegality there are no grounds for criminal police investigation If no such grounds the Electoral Commission would instead solely undertake its civil investigation.

As it has already been determined there are reasonable grounds for a criminal investigation by CPS and EC, the Met's job no is to secure evidence, e.g. Reform UK bank account statements, commissioning of polls and invoicing detail, etc etc and witness statements from all parties, interviews under caution tapes etc.

There also were redacted names in the film footage where it was claimed other individuals made illegal donations to Reform UK so as these names become known to the Met this may result in further widening of the investigation. Reform UK has also stated it is carrying out its own "internal investigation" the police may ask for detail of this.

Then the Met passes the investigation and evidence file to the CPS to determine strength of evidence. If a 51% chance of securing successful conviction in a court of law the CPS will advise charges- against the party and/or individual Reform UK officers involved. The case will then come to trial in a court of law.

Hawthorne and another crypto billionaire called Ben Delo have pledged £1 million each every month until the next election. A total of £72million. Delo was convicted and pardoned by Trump for laundering drug money, similar to posh George although his was "conspiracy" to launder drug money
Does anyone really want people like this funding political parties?

I don’t.

I don't either thank you.

*Mass deportations. Where will they dump the people*

Why are they allowed to be ‘dumped’ here?
You happy with that?

To be fair, AS are not “dumped” here. They choose to come, despite the facts they come using illegal sources.

Political AS are a big problem especially if you look at countries they are arriving from. It’s not just a UK issue, it’s actually almost a worldwide problem and it does need resolving. I don’t think anyone would argue with that.

But it needs resolving in a way which is legal firstly, secondly humane and thirdly, final.

Two very experienced governments, with good relationships with other countries leaders, in the main, have failed to resolve this issue quickly enough.

When Reform voters come to realise that Farage’s plans won’t work either, what then?

There’s simply no doubt that recent wars and Brexit have made the issue of AS and displaced people far far more visible.

Due to Wars in Ukraine, Afghanistan, Gaza, some countries in Africa and more recently Iran has displaced £300,000 displaced people, men, women and children.

Elderly men and women, families with children, mean far more AS are single men in their 20/30/40’s simply, in many cases, because their families cannot make the arduous and often dangerous journeys from their countries of birth.

I truly don’t have the answers and I don’t believe Reform has either.

I’m not sure they sneer, but they are gross hypocrites.

I wouldn’t vote for something with the caveat “so long as they don’t come to our town”.

Also, in common with almost everyone I know, both in RL and on here, I definitely don’t want violent criminals shipped into our country. We have enough of our own.

There definitely are cultural differences and there’s adjustments which need to be made by those wishing to settle here.

I welcome migrants, however they arrive, I want them to come, feel welcome, be safe, work, pay taxes, integrate.

It saddens me, and in fact makes me very angry, to hear groups of people being demonised and at the moment it’s both Jews and Muslims, for very different reasons.

I’ve worked closely with both these communities when a civil servant, both as colleagues and as claimants.

For me, “good” and “bad” people exist in all societies, all cultures, all colours, all faiths, all ages, male, female, gay, straight.

I give all a chance, once they let themselves, their families, me down, it’s then a different story.

I’m not a Christian, but some of my values follow the more positive things in the New Testament and my moral compass is all are innocent until proven guilty.

This is simply my view and I completely accept it’s not for all thanks

Each to their own, live and let live thanks

Farage doesn't care about his country. He is focussed on enriching himself with the aid of his dubious friends.

Nor does Starmer, he has walked away from the constituents who voted for him.

My thoughts exactly 👏👏👏👏👏

Casdon Sat 12-Sept-26 19:10:11

Starmer didn’t waste £350,000 of taxpayers money on a completely pointless bye election in an attempt to prove everybody loves me which proves I’m innocent though, did he?

No he resigned and walked away.

Being an MP is a job, anyone has a right to resign and either retire or take up another role, paid or unpaid.

Frankly it’s none of anyone else’s business, oh and Starmer didn’t resign because he was about to be investigated and he wasn’t so stoooopid to think had he done this, the investigation would magically disappear.

He’s in good company, then. In 2012 HSBC were fined $1.9 billion for money laundering. They shifted $881 million for Central American drug cartels. That’s when I took my money elsewhere.

Cossy Sat 12-Sept-26 19:36:39

That's Starmer's choice. He's had his time as PM and he is no longer a leader of any political party. Farage however is seeking to lead to country but he may walk away before getting to government....

Vintagewhine Sat 12-Sept-26 21:38:05

HSBC does not fund a political party it's strictly neutral politically, so there is no comparison.

I think petra was saying that she doesn’t support corruption. Walking away from HSBC because it enabled money laundering.

Maremia Sun 13-Sept-26 06:12:10

Starmer has 'walked away', after years of actually working as a Politician.
Farage never puts in any effort at all.
