French school children on strike

I have just seen a report from BBC online that French students are striking and protesting in several places across France.

They are complaining about lack of teachers, conditions in school etc. Some have started fires outside school buildings.

Seems education is a victim of circumstances elsewhere not just UK

Interesting mokryna, your end comments. I always thought of the French as eternal students. My 4 years at university were done and dusted when French friends were still slogging away at their studies. They seemed to enjoy it.
It's sad in a way that these days they're only studying extra courses to keep themselves occupied due to lack of employment.

In that respect, the UK thankfully still allows pupils with few qualifications to be masters of their own destiny, and that's how some entrepreneurs are made.

It depends on what studies you do and what method you use. After lycee there is a choice of state university (about 200euros per year) which you can enter after the bac.or Grand Ecole. The latter you have to pay for and entrance it is on selection after, usually, two years of prepar. This is not to be sniffed at, so 2 plus 3+ years plus masters.

I agree Oreo your post at 19:43, the way I read your comments it was as though you thought it was a competition, my apologies if I misinterpreted that.

That’s ok 😃

MawsRosie The students are from Lycee or 16+. The pupils from these schools are not burning their schools, there are other people coming in from other areas.

I think this was what I was getting at- to refer to them as children is misleading.

There aren’t any children as such doing any rioting that I have seen on the tv footage.

Setting schools on fire, buses & fire engines are on fire, even dousing people in petrol.
Police are being attacked, even some lump trying to simulate sex with the Virgin Mary- absolutely disgusting & depressing.
I’ll never, ever go to France again.
It’s like WWZ

Oh for heavens sake!
I don’t think the French Tourist Trade will be quaking in their boots, not that I know what you mean by WWZ.
But it sounds as if you’ll be happier with Bognor.

Just thinking back about the 45 kids in my primary school class. The ‘playground’ was asphalt, very small and in winter it was absolutely freezing. We didn’t know anything better and just accepted it. Education was considered a privilege and a way to ,eventually, get a decent job to support ourselves. Teachers were respected and their word was law. How times change.

Yes come on who wouldnt cheer on 70 plus injuries, males assaulting female teachers, etc. You stick in the mud you.

Another universe ? Or too much sav Blanc ?

I would very much like to be able to afford to go to France with my husband, before I die. He loves it there.

Might start a Go Fund Me.

I can’t imagine kids here going on strike. They do get taken to protest marches with their parents sometimes. I think the schools round here are absolutely wonderful compared with the awful dumps I attended. Concrete, concrete and more concrete. Here they are surrounded by fields and have lovely modern buildings, canteens, outdoor furniture, cubby houses, gymnasiums etc. They pour money into them all the time.

I think it is so much to do with Oz having so much space compared to population.

I got Eurostar tickets for £35 each way in their recent sale - it’s costing nearly as much to get to London!

So you imagine this is happening ALL over France?
Have you seen the behaviour of some protesters at recent eg pro- Palestine riots?
Does that stop you living in England?

Galaxy Sat 03-Oct-26 12:48:41

I loathe the pro palestine marches, I would really rather live in a country that hadn't decided to fight that war on thus country's streets.

Galaxy Sat 03-Oct-26 13:03:50

What I am finding odds is the muted reaction, I cant even imagine what the reaction would be if the 'far right' were hurting teachers here.

Desdemona Sat 03-Oct-26 13:11:59

We need to be more French.

Not condoning physical violence however.

Mawsrosie Paris was a s___hole 15yrs ago, full of graffiti, migrants living in cardboard boxes back then. It’s only getting worse.

No not the romantic city of yesterday I am afraid. No desire to visit again.
Neither Bognor.

WWZ is a zombie apocalypse movie MR that’s what it reminds me of. Give me peace & quiet any day.

MawsRosie Sat 03-Oct-26 22:16:23

Well that’s your opinion and you’re welcome to it.
But out of interest, how many UK cities have you visited recently?
Seen the tent village in Park Lane?
The rough sleepers at all the major railway stations or on the underground?
You’ve got to be realistic, there’s good and bad everywhere and the current protests -however violent- hardly warrant “I’ll never, ever go to France again” !

I wouldn’t want to be caught up in that if a was on holiday in France.
Yes I’ve witnessed the tent village on Park lane.
Seen Homelessness (which is unbearable to see, & migrants, drinks & drugged up zombies hanging around Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester.
Glasgow city on the decline.
I couldn’t care less if ever went to any of these cities ever again. I don't feel safe.
That is my opinion & I am entitled to my opinion.

Id go maybe to a village, or small town but not back to Paris, or Marseille (I’ve been there, it’s now nothing like it was 35 yrs ago.
Just my take on it.
Think I prefer Italy, again smaller towns rather than the cities.

nanna8 Sun 04-Oct-26 03:05:59

Yes , Marseille is a bit of a disappointment these days. We went there a few years back and were very disappointed. Ah well, tempus fugit and all that.

MartavTaurus Sun 04-Oct-26 07:08:40

It depends what you're looking for in Paris. If you want pretty, pretty untroubled countryside I'd suggest you head far afield to Brittany where even the natives have an inherent dislike of France's capital city. The Loire region is also beautifully majestic, and Alsace offers up special treats too.

However, Paris has a charmingly haunting sort of character, all of its own It's meant to be grimy and sinister, as shown in the works of Zola like L'Assommoir, and of course those of Victor Hugo. The human condition is meant to be raw and brutal, c'est la vie. If you find all that unpalatable, try Baudelaire's poetry in Les Fleurs du Mal where he turns the ugly, decaying realities of Paris into beauty.

It's all in the eyes of the discerning beholder. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Here endeth the lecture for today.

I agree. At least though they were torching half the city down & attacking the fire service, police, Or teachers.
Who is going to fund the rebuilding of these buildings? Taxes will surely need to go up, isn’t France practically bankrupt?

MT62 Sun 04-Oct-26 09:59:13

Not torching, I meant. Sorry just woken up 🤦‍♀️ Galaxy’s post
