And other mis-quoted sayings!

I worked with someone who would say "Well, of course, it's catch 2" NO IT IS'NT, IT's CATCH 22!

Also "The proof is in the pudding" Actually, it's "the proof of the pudding is in the eating"

Then there was the chap who would refer to young "whippet snappers" (Perhaps I should have reported him to the RSPCA?) and another who once remarked that some such action resulted in "a human cry" (Took a minute or so to realise he meant "a hue and cry"

Please share yours, unless of course it's just me......

Watched a bit of Celebrity Catchphrase yesterday in a moment of boredom. One of the phrases was 'the proof is in the pudding'. Hellooooooo........

From Wiktionary: It is frequently now known in the shorter form the proof is in the pudding, which dates back to the 1920s and came into common use in the United States in the 1950s.

Ana - exactly!

Well- I find those mistakes funny. Life's too short. And anyhow- as a foreigner, I've made many of those mistakes myself in the past.

Mind you, I often pick up mistakes made by the 'natives' - including on here, but would never dream of saying so smile

Recently someone put on my FB that I am 'a gluten for punishment'. And an e-mail about some relative's 'prostrate' operation. And another about their new 'ménage' (household??? instead of 'manège' horse riding rink).

Ah, well 'c'est la vie' as you say in English smile

I probably make plenty myself. Granjura I have a friend whose husband is recovering from prostate cancer (thankfully). He has been treated for about 3 years and despite all the hospital appointments, treatment and leaflets etc she still says prostrate cancer, bless here. Least of her worries I'm sure.

granjura Is that ice skating or roller skating horses?

granjura Tue 31-Dec-13 19:20:30

Ice- skating at this time of year, LOL. I did wonder if it was the right word as I was tiping... been back in my French-speaking Jura for 4 years now, and yes- I do feel my English slipping (and not on ice) ...

On the Andrew Marr show this morning, Eric Pickles apologised 'unreservably' for the flood problem not being dealt with more efficiently. confused

rockgran Sun 09-Feb-14 22:10:52

It was a mistake- undoubtably. grin
