This expression was used three times in quick succession on Today this morning. Once it meant 'in future' (so why didn't he say that?). Twice it meant nothing at all. The other meaningless expression around at the moment is 'to be fair'. Sometimes it seems to mean 'to be honest'. Where do these expressions come from? And why do they spread so quickly?

When - did you have competitions to see how many times team members could use the buzzwords. One of my favourites was "we're on a journey", as some kind of excuse for the mess an organisation I was employed by increasingly got itself into.

Yes but "lessons will be learnt"

Iam64 Wed 22-Jan-14 11:44:46

Yes indeed newest, or won't in reality.
I just read the summary of a Part 8 review, into the murder of a 2 year old boy who lived a couple of miles away. His stepfather caused over 20 significant injuries to the little chap, whose mother found him floppy, and he was dead on arrival in hospital. The findings, and recommendations, could have been cut and pasted from any of the other part 8 reviews over recent years.
Sorry all - I don't want to derail this fun thread, but 'lessons will be learnt' increasingly makes me want to chuck stuff at the tv/radio.

Yes, Iam - 'blue sky thinking' and 'helicopter vision' can't be used more than once in a lifetime without your colleagues realising what a plonker you are. We had a colleague who peppered her meeting input with every daft phrase she had heard from senior managers, and sure enough she was promoted to her own level of incompetence. Demoted just before I retired!

whenim64 Wed 22-Jan-14 11:47:00

That was to your earlier post, Iam

Iam64 Wed 22-Jan-14 11:50:27

LOL when! No irony there then.
"on a journey together" is another of my favourites, especially when used by new managers to staff groups who have been on that journey for some years.

Synchronicity was my most hated management-speak word.
I am very proud of my dead pan delivery of "No matter how far we push the envelope it will still be stationery" though. (Pedants may be able to hear the difference between ery and ary, but it was good enough for my audience).

whenim64 Wed 22-Jan-14 12:06:39

Nice touch, Mamie grin

Mamie that's brilliant. grin
Iam that present continuous is one of my pet hates - sorry! Too many syllables to say the same as 'I love it'. I am very pedantic....

margaretm74 Wed 22-Jan-14 19:13:19

Are any of you planning anything for Valentines? (Grrrr)

Joan Thu 23-Jan-14 04:47:21

Well, it's my birthday so I always get cards and presents!! In fact when i was a skinny spotty early teenager, the postman used to look at me all puzzled, wondering what secret attractions I had!!

I find soppiness embarrassing though, so there isn't much of the hearts and flowers stuff around me.

margaretm74 Thu 23-Jan-14 20:23:36

don't you mean present's? (sorry, couldn't resist)

Joan Thu 23-Jan-14 21:21:27

Ha Ha.

Yes, I AM one of those pedantic people who rub our the greengrocer's apostrophe when passing his chalk board.

I just can't help myself.

Galen Thu 23-Jan-14 21:32:13

Galen Thu 23-Jan-14 22:26:53

No! It was a musical. The verse ends 'And to hell with Burgundy'
Never agreed with that as it's my favourite wine.

merlotgran Thu 23-Jan-14 23:28:05

A good bit of rousing!

Galen Thu 23-Jan-14 23:34:44

WOW!

I think we should adopt it as the GN anthem.!

Let us rejoice for we are young!

Joan Fri 24-Jan-14 01:18:19

It was sung by the university choir at my (late in life) graduation at the University of Queensland. I thought it was magic - a sort of connection to mediaeval times. I did Latin at school so the words make sense.

Would be a nice anthem for us, wouldn't it - though the juvenes bit is rather wishful thinking. Full words and translation:-
