Hubby always says what does poor Gordon Bennett say when I say it c b a r-- is not bad compared to some words some people seem to say every 2nd word ???

Ah yes, hooty, I find dropped Ts annoying too. Interestingly, my mother used to object to the way I said the double t in words like little because I made the sound to far forward on my palette, or something. Maybe I'd have been better to glottal stop.

Can put up with CBA, LOL (just!) etc but i come over all jack nicholson in the shining when i hear "he borrowed me this.." or "can you borrow me that.." Aaaarrgghhh!!!! Anyone else?

GrumpyGran - you've just written something that I applaud! You put 'bored with'. I hate, hate, hate 'bored of' and 'fed up of'! I'm not too keen on 'Me and' either, instead of 'X and me'. My father was very hot on grammar and, 60 odd years later, I can still hear him correcting us. I find it ever so hard not to do it as a sort of Pavlov's dogs reaction when I hear perfect strangers using lazy grammar!

Hooty. I was so glad when oldest DGD got to 15, the house had echoed to 'Daaad, I AM for'een!' Every time he told her she shouldn't do something!

Suzie - I agree with you (and your father) about correct grammar. The one that always gets to me is 'different to' Very few these days seem to know that it should be 'different from'. It is now used widely in the media.

I always make a decision, I don't take it.

I disapprove of all phrases announcing people's boredom. Nothing is boring; people are bored.

And the rest of us don't want to know when someone is bored, thank you.

I think I'm old fogey! Dont like any of the expessions mentioned. Also hate hearing people say 'crap' or 'shit'- a graphic picture of these things comes into my head. I have a friend , female, 74, who regularly says she 'needs a pee' and I inwardly cringe. Why not 'need the loo'? Im not so old fashioned as another friend who talks about 'spending a penny' though! Sounds very twee. I actually hate any swearing too though my daughter tells me 'they are just words Mum!'

I have always been bored with swearing as I find swearing boring. (I don't do it but have heard plenty.)

I agree with the general theme I think of overworked and overused words or phrases. The one I dislike the most is 'to die for'. Really? You would die for a kitchen work top or a plate of dinner?

I say cba and it makes me laugh, however there are only about 3 people I would say this to.

I said to my son and daughter in law that I thought someone was a 'tosser' they were horrified ! I thought it meant a tramp but they explained that it was to do with masturbation . Never said it since.

I once Described someone as a twat to the family and they were also appalled. I thought it meant the same as twit.

And, talking about the media, even announcers and commentators now say 'There's four reasons for...' NO - there ARE four reasons, not there is four reasons. Oh this thread has really got me going now! Think I'd better sign off.

My dainty well-brought up DD1 aged about 7, was staying with MIL and soon-to-be new step-dad and wanted to help him with car servicing. MIL suggested that better not, as she may learn some new bad words, such as "Bother", "Dash it all", "Blow" to which she happily replied, "You mean 'Oh shit' "! To this day don't know where she heard that, as it wasn't one that anyone in the family had ever used, so must have come from school, but has gone into family lore!

Swearing IS boring and doesn't deserve an alternative expression. Lazy language, in general, is tedious.

This is something one hears constantly on TV. "Them things" "them people" etc, when it should be "those things, those people" etc! Really sloppy, ugly English!!!
As for pronunciation, it seems to be all American now, with emphasis on the first syllable, EG, REsearch instead of reSEARCH. CON tribute instead of conTRIBute. & so on.
