Oh dear......have just seen another one.

I came across some funny spellings whn I was teaching. It was often when children had come across similar words in different subjects . So for example (from Exam papers): :
The tube from the mouth to the stomach is called the sarcophagus.
At the end of the bronchioles in the lungs are little things called ravioli.
Jesus was betrayed by Judases chariot.
Cross pollination is when angry bees go from flower to flower
And my favourite : Many men think that a vasectomy will make them important but they are wrong.

Actually correct pronunciation helps with spelling. If more people said Handbag instead of ham bag, Chest of drawers etc clearly the confusion would not arise so often. Lots of people say Libry instead of library, samwich instead of sandwich, Wesndy instead of Wednesday etc. I had a child once writing about using a ‘moke’ for the TV at home - it took me ages to realise he meant remote control. I could imagine his family pronouncing it ‘moke’

Perhaps we should go back to spelling as we speak. After all that’s how we know that Horatio Nelson spoke with a Norfolk accent. It would make spelling so much easier. Cort instead of caught. Bort instead of bought. I mean who decided on the aughts and oughts? And why?

I saw a restaurant menu where they were serving Sirlion Steak, a sign for a stationary sale and they're instead of there on a Barclays bank signage.

My favourite sign is ‘Giant Rug Sale’. For giant houses, I imagine.

Is it text speak which is upsetting things? My DGDs all have spellings to learn each week so it is being taught.

Do you think it's to do with people not reading so much or not having spelling tests at school?

By the way Im amazed that the poem I have a spelling checker was removed. Why? I used to use it with a basic English class as an amusing example of why you shouldn't rely on spell checkers. No-one took offence! Why should they?

We also looked at amusing examples of incorrect grammar such as 'when washing the teapot,stand upside down on the draining board.' We had a good laugh, discussed why it was wrong and how it could be better phrased.

There have always been people with poor spelling and grammar. I don't think it's any worse than it ever was. Some people just find it very difficult.

Free range sausages always gets me, that lovely mental vision of all those adorable little bangers gambolling in the fields!

I was accused by GNHQof insulting dyslexics!

Nothing to add except I just had a lovely giggle.

The reason for that, Mawbroon is that GN posters have leapt many times to the defence of dyslexics they thought would be upset at a post, and as a result GNHQ are becoming brainwashed into seeing insults to them all over the place.

That poem has been posted before - everyone laughed and agreed that it was a perfect picture of an over-enthusiastic spell-checker with no idea what the writer actually wanted to type. Nothing to do with dyslexia!

In Lidl recently small storks of celery in packs!

I have a picture in mind - he's not in a packet though!

I have a quite severely dyslexic DD but can still laugh at the spelling chequer poem, as can she.

My pet peeve is the constant misuse of compound personal pronouns in a futile attempt to make oneself appear more educated/intelligent. e.g. "If you could reply to myself or my colleague..." or "Should it be advantageous to yourself..." ME and YOU! Eejits! (and breathe!)
