Evening all, usual good wishes.

Many of us have been annoyed by the misuse of "the proof is in the pudding" but twice today on the radio I've heard of someone being on " tender hooks"

It's tenter hooks!

And no, I don't have the faintest idea why!

One of my favourites was when a colleague said that something was "a fragrant breach of company policy".

PinkCakes yourfriend’s husband is probably having a lay down after having an operation on his ‘prostrate’

My DH used to think Directory Enquiries was called Director of Enquiries. To be honest I think it sounds far nicer.
Do Directory Enquiries even exist nowadays!

Some gates near my house have a sign saying " do not block , entrance in constance use" . I feel tempted to ask who Constance is ?

There is a FB site on cooking and healthy eating which is often contacted by people who wish to "loose" weight.

Apparently the origin of the saying
"the birds and the bees"
may have been
"the birds and the beasts"
...which really makes more sense.

On a rather different note I’m
getting tired of hearing about ‘upticks’ recently - what does it mean? And when did ‘going forward’ replace ‘ in the future’?

My headmaster father heard a child in the front row of his assembly clearly shouting with gusto “and lead us not into Temple Meads Station but deliver us from evil. Amen” at the end of the the Lord’s Prayer. We lived in Bristol.

lizzypopbottle Sun 20-Sept-20 20:58:24

I heard, "Our Father, in charge in Heaven..." in assembly at my children's primary school. ?

Mealybug Sun 20-Sept-20 21:05:26

I don't know if it's just a Northern thing but people always say should of or could of instead of should have or could have. "come up pants" lol best I've heard.

sodapop Sun 20-Sept-20 21:54:25

Different to instead of different from

I think gadarene swine is a biblical reference Gad3 Don't know any more than that,

annodomini Sun 20-Sept-20 22:02:26

4-year-old on his first visit to London discovered Pickled Lily circus. That was also his name for my MiL's home-made piccalilli which, for all I knew, might have been accurate. grin

MawB2 Sun 20-Sept-20 22:12:30

Gad3

I'm missing something, what is gadarene swine?

The Gadarene Swine featured in a Bible story and were pigs into which Jesus cast the demons that had possessed a madman and which as a result ran down a steep cliff into the sea and were killed; They were called Gadarene swine or pigs because they belonged to the inhabitants of the town of Gadara.
So it means involved or engaged in a headlong or potentially disastrous rush to do something.

Another one, "heart rendering"

* Mealybug* many people say should of, would of etc, but written it's (or should be!) Should have would have if written in full .

There's a classic Malapropism about a court case in Ireland, the only evidence I have though, is on Twitter from someone who claims to have been in court.

A District Judge saw a defendant chewing gum in court, he directed a court officer to: “Tell that man to stop masticating”. Court officer approaches the defendant and says: “The judge says you have to take your hands out of your pockets.”

True or not? When I read the story years ago it ended with the court in uproar and the judge called for a ten minute recess. Scroll down to Patricia Brazil, then later, Ronan Lupton.

In an article, I have just seen -
"This is only a slither of the whole issue."

gringrin love it MawB2

narrowboatnan Tue 22-Sept-20 09:24:43

Maw that’s brilliant!

A new one that I’ve come across several times on social media is the use of Are instead of Our. ‘Are friend went there’ or even ‘Are Father, who art in heaven’

dwgw6062 Tue 22-Sept-20 18:57:11

Love this thread. ? My current bugbear is using am instead of I’m.

specki4eyes Tue 22-Sept-20 22:44:57

I'm also a fierce grammar pedant. My clever son (Bsc Hons and highly respected in his field) said in an email to me "I wish I hadn't wrote that". My lip bled from the biting!
I know that this has already been aired on another thread but I am incensed by the slovenly way Jay Blades speaks on The Repair Shop and the Rubbish Tip Show. Cant believe that it's the BBC ! It's embarrassing because I often watch it with my French neighbour who is trying to learn to speak English.

Callistemon Tue 22-Sept-20 22:52:07

I think the BBC is trying to get down wiv da kids, specki4eyes, but the kids - they ain't watchin', man.
