A survey has revealed the most irritating mispronounced words:

Any word pronounced with a k instead of g , anyhink nothink somethink , drives me mad

Mamgujane Thu 24-Jun-21 11:26:45

And then we wonder why people can’t spell!! They write what they’re saying.
Have had many an argument with students over the “aitch” question, usually demanding recourse to the dictionary.
Predominately instead of predominantly. Off your own back - another classroom argument. And I’ve had to explain to students that unfortunately the idiom is “can’t be arsed” and therefore best avoided, at least in class. Many of them say can’t be asked.
I criticised an estate agent once in an email and she “reputed” my criticism!!
Well, that’s a few things off my chest. But plenty more where they came from...

Samwidge for sandwich errrggghhhh!

Moggycuddler Thu 24-Jun-21 11:30:02

Arthuritis, though another gran posted it. Labrinth for labyrinth. Vunnerable for vulnerable. And draws for drawers.

'Maths' or 'math' in US is pronounced 'maaths ' in N.ireland. My husband was a maths teacher so I quickly learnt to pronounce it differently when we moved to England!

lightallan Thu 24-Jun-21 11:31:03

nothink for nothing

haitch for aitch

Two, too and to

ta for to

There are many more but too many to write just now.

Definitely of instead of have but I am told that is part of the Devon and Cornish dialect when I complain.

pinkym Thu 24-Jun-21 11:35:59

Our DGC love that Grandad cannot pronounce "squirrel" and pronounces it "squiwwl". They're always trying to come up with ways to trick him into saying it!

A friend's father used to say 'marygold' instead of marigold and I am not sure I can spell how he said
tuberculosis - tubercolorocus.
My dear Mum always said fruneral and pimrose.

Semiruralgirl Thu 24-Jun-21 11:42:05

Grannynannywammy - how do you pronounce ‘sixth’? Do you pronounce the ‘x’ or not? I don’t like it when when the ‘x’ is missed out and people say ‘sith’.

I don’t like it when people say ‘of off’ or is it ‘off of’? Or when an ‘r’ is added on the end of a word which ends in a vowel, and lots of other mispronunciations too!

Oh that 'haitch' instead of 'aitch' drives me nuts!!
As does 'sumfink', 'somethink', there's a 'G' on the end!!!!

Pammie1 Thu 24-Jun-21 11:46:40

@Spinnaker. Oh God yes, this. I hate it being used in speech but it’s even worse written down.

Moggycuddler Thu 24-Jun-21 11:46:47

My brother, his entire life, has said the word "can't" as "caint." Don't know why.

Pammie1 Thu 24-Jun-21 11:49:14

I absolutely hate the Americanisation ‘normalcy’ for normality.

Yammy Thu 24-Jun-21 11:50:22

I taught in an area that said while instead of until e.g, wait while Friday instead of wait until.
This isn't a wrong pronunciation but really irritates me from my own area they say someone has "Sugar "when they mean Diabetes.

lizzypopbottle Thu 24-Jun-21 11:55:03

Create is so often pronounced cuh-rate or crate.

How does one pronounce 'labyrinth'?
Is the y sounded?

FarNorth Thu 24-Jun-21 12:00:43

Many of them say can’t be asked.
grin
I expect they like it when you explain, tho.

FarNorth Thu 24-Jun-21 12:04:12

Lots of lolz.

homefarm Thu 24-Jun-21 12:04:43

"Northern Island", I always say which one. Broadcasters are the worst for this one. I always thought there was an r in it

MissElly Thu 24-Jun-21 12:07:27

Imeegitly for immediately drives me nuts and I’m with you Pammiel on normalcy. I hate it angry
But enjoying having so little to worry about today smile

HillyN Thu 24-Jun-21 12:18:28

In Bristol the local dialect adds an 'l' to the end of any word ending with a vowel. I had a long argument with my (Bristolian) DH before he would accept that 'idea' was a real word! He'd said 'ideal' all his life and thought Ideal Milk was so named because it was a good ideal to drink it.
He can never pronounce 'crisps' either and asks for a packet of 'crisp' or 'crips'. I have to say that mispronounced words don't irritate me though, I just want to giggle!

LinkyPinky Thu 24-Jun-21 12:21:20

Wander instead of wonder and vice-versa. AYEbiza.

Grannynannywanny Thu 24-Jun-21 12:23:36
