New puppy coming, advice please

*nanapug' I don't remember gettng up in the night, but for the first few weeks with the dog I have now, I stayed up till midnight and got up at about 7am, and she was fine, but then she was about 12 weeks old when I brought her home. She's got an astonishng capacity to wait if she sees it's raining heavily!

We've had our 12-week-old Yorkie/poodle cross for a fortnight. From the second night she's slept through (usually) from 11ish to 6am.

We make sure she doesn't eat after 9pm and take her out for her last walk around 10.30, then it's brushing & straight into her crate. She has to be STRAIGHT outside in the morning though. Straight as in picked up & put outside immediately.

So far she hasn't really encountered rain, so I don't know how much difference that will make!

Has anyone any experience of these Coolcoats for dogs? One of mine suffers horribly in this heat and I've only read about them.

I have a cool mat for my dogs. I put it in the crate under a blanket for my puppy at night and she is sleeping much better in this heat. It generally goes in the car and I can honestly say it's great. I think that it perhaps works on the same principal as the cool coat.

Just been watching a TV vet talking about keeping dogs cool in this hot weather, and he demonstrated the Easi-Dri Dog Cooling Coat from PetsAtHome.

My whippet keep wrapping herself up in one of her many duvets [just a nose peeking out]. But then she is a dog of very little brain [and it's quite cool in the kitchen].

I've ordered a cooling coat from a well known online company who don't pay their taxes, and it arrives tomorrow. Will feed back. Love the idea of the cool mat too ... do they do them for humans?

Aka, I wish they did! Baby GS could do with one in his cot overnight. My two dogs slept well on theirs last night whilst we were cooked!!!

Cooling coat arrived. Very fetching shade of blue. The dog did not object to wearing it, which was lucky as he's never worn a coat before being so fluffy. However it was certainly a conversation opener when I took him out 'what on earth is he wearing a coat for in this weather?' Kept having to stop and explain and other dog walkers feeling the coat and asking if it worked and where I got it from.
Yes, it works. I'd not take him out in the midday sun but it means I'm not having to get up at 5.00am or wait until dusk (the gloaming for our Scottish GNetters) to walk him. A good buy, would appreciate a waistcoat for myself in this material

We just got a GSD puppy, and our older dog is 9.

Feeding wise , we just fed them together, and there have been no problems, but Ella the older one, loves the puppy and lets her away with play biting, which led to a vet trip....

Toilet wise, I swear by crate training - no dog will mess in its bed, and you just need to keep a close eye on them when not crated - first sign of a floor sniff and they;re whisked out to 'pooh corner'
Also make sure as soon as its allowed out, that you take it to a big field and let it off its lead - it will be so scared it will stick to you like glue, and make life and recall so much easier in the future

Wow, thank you susieb755, those are some great tips, especially the one about taking her to a big field. We will certainly do that. Yes, we are getting a crate. As far as I am concerned it means one can switch off occasionally, which we couldn't do with our last dog when he was a puppy, and then we would find little "gifts" in strange places.

Nanapug, we've also been making sure our pup meets as many other dogs as possible while we're out (checking with the owners first, of course!)

She loves playing with them and she's learning manners at the same time - including "Don't touch that, it's MINE!".

All this talk of new puppies is making me broody

Same here, Aka. I hate my little whippet being an only dog [they love other dogs], but can't really afford to insure two dogs .

I've already got two digs Tegan but there's something about puppies....their smell, their wriggliness, their little pink tongues and the snuffling breath, those little yaps and their eyes when they see something new for the first time...I think I'm turning into PoG!!

Ah....lovely memories, susie. I remember my Nell sitting on the stairs at that age and saying to her 'you got up there, why do I have to carry you down every time?'

Oh yes, Aka, the eyes... Seeing how exciting the world is to my puppy is making it more exciting to me at the same time. Even a trip to the park is an adventure as far as she's concerned.

We are resisting the temptation to let her sleep in our bed. So far.

Ooohh - Aka I'd forgotten about the smell of puppies, there is nothing else to compare with it. It's just lovely. Sadly we've no dogs now, they just wouldn't be right for our lifestyle at the moment. I do miss them and who knows what the future may bring.

Our puppy is misnamed!! We called her Maggie May but it should be Imelda because she loves shoes!!! She's now 4 months old and weighs 20kg!

We had our first trip to the dogs allowed beach yesterday, so puppy met lots of friendly dogs and discovered dried seaweed. We are saving the introduction to the waves for another day (its a surfing beach, so quite rough sea). Farmers market tomorrow - right now he is down the garden with a captured wellington boot. There is obviously something about the smell of feet!

I love to hear about these puppies enjoying life. Here's some dogs and pups enjoying playtime at doggie daycare today. Mine was lay down having a wash at the end of the clip. She's asleep now, after a fun day.

If I had a new puppy I would make sure that my established dog was fed first, whilst keeping the puppy in another room. Doing it the other way round could cause jealousy and aggression. The puppy needs to be shown who is top dog so that it will defer to your existing dog.

Don't get up in the night! Put the puppy in a fairly small room and lay down lots of newspaper - it will pee on that if caught short and will stop as it's bladder becomes large enough to contain the urine all night. A dogs instinct is not to foul its own space - it will learn very quickly to hold out til morning!
