My old dog is poorly again. He's lain on the sofa all morning and didn't show any interest in being taken for his walk, which he normally loves above all else sad]

She is home. Yes groggy but thinking how ill she was when she left here last Saturday she looks so much better, has a post op check up on Wednesday

That is good news. I expect Hun is still a bit groggy from the anaesthetic, but you must be over the moon to have her back.

She is coming home

Yes Tegan, I think the worry, guilt, anger , sadness is the cost of the love, companionship , laughter , loyalty they give

Whenever something happens to our pets we end up with a combination of guilt and anger don't we. I suppose that, to be fair to them [and you] she needed rehydrating before anything further could be done. Fingers crossed that all will be well; dogs are incredibly resilient [more so than cats imo]. Please post as soon as you get news.

Thinking of you and hoping for a positive outcome. I have cats not dogs but the place any pet holds in our heart is very special.

Tegan, I have thinking of this today, she was examined Thursday , they said her temperature was slightly raised , I phoned Friday afternoon and said she was getting more ill, I was asked did I think she would be alright untill Monday, I said no this is why I am ringing you. They arrange her admittance Saturday morning, put her on a drip, phone me Sunday and asked could they scan her , her blood tests showed high levels white blood cells, they phoned back after the scan and asked if she had been spayed - they are the only vets here and treat all my dogs ! They then said she would need surgery, I could choose Sunday or Mondsy, if Sunday it would be double costs, I said if a risk to her life then Sunday , they said she would be alright untill Monday and would be checked throught the night. I then said any change even in the night to operate her, just save her . Now I have to wait untill four to see if she will be home tonight or in for another night . Now I am troubled I didn't give the go ahead for yesterday , but they assured me she would be alright to wait untill Monday. I know it is heading towards a thousand now, how could I have paid double for the op

Sending a bit of love and hug Annibach. I went to a fascinating lecture by a vet recently with a group of dog loving pals and a lovely dog trainer we work with. The talk was about positive training methods but one of the things this vet with 35 years experience returned to frequently was the phrase "yes we love our dogs to bits and they love us". That's why so many of us are watching your posts, empathising with you and your dog and sending positive vibes to both of you.

Annie; I never used to have my dogs spayed as I thought it was done to make money for vets and for convenience for their owners. I went abroad on holiday a few years ago leaving my dog in the care of someone who walked her each day and family members visited as well. Got home to find she'd nearly died of a womb infection. She had been ill prior to the holiday and had been put on a course of antibiotics which had improved her. What I've never understood is that the vet never asked if she'd been spayed [although it would have been on their records] and I would have thought that it would have been the first thing that sprung to mind with her symptoms. Vets seem to rely so much on blood tests that they don't seem to be able to use 'gut instinct' any more.She did survive and lived for several more years but I still feel guilt in that I refused to have a blood test done due to cost and said just to try the antibiotics. If the vet does present you with a huge bill I would query why a womb infection wasn't considered straight away, given that it's one of the main problems with elderly bitches. Spaying isn't without it's dangers so on no account must you feel guilt about that. My thoughts are with you and your dog; my Fliss picked up so quickly once the problem had been found.

Thank you all, seems this could have happened spayed or not. She is in theatre , I have to telephone at four and will then know if she will be well enough to come home this evening

When I stop fretting over her I will panic over the bill, she has been in four days plus the op plus medication , eeek

Anniebach please don't be angry with yourself, give yourself a break. Having your dog spayed may not have protected her from whatever the vet has found. I hope you slept and that your dog responds positively to the treatment (and that you can somehow find the large amounts of cash needed to fund it)

I am riddled with guilt, so many family problems over the last six years I didn't get around to having her spayed , how stupid and how careless of me, I am so angry with me

Has your dog been tested for pyroplasmosis? From a tick. Both of our collies have had that and the symptoms sound similar.
They both recovered TG.

This is all very draining for you both as it goes on and on. It sounds like they've found a reason for her illness at least. There is a good possibility this will turn out OK, try to hang on in there Annie x
