My dog has been off colour for few days , she was checked by the vet yesterday, given anti biotic jab and if no improvement in few days they will carry out blood tests for disbetes. I am really worried about this , anyone have or had a pet with diabetes?

Anne58 Thu 17-Sept-15 08:46:15

Sorry to hear your dog is poorly. I haven't had a pet with diabetes myself, but I'm sure I saw special diet food for it when I was last in the vets.

How old is your dog Anniebach? Sorry I can't help as so far, I haven't looked after a dog with diabetes. Lots of other 'age related' stuff as my dogs have reached old age. Sending best wishes to you and your dog

Hope your dog's health improves, Annie.
Our neighbour's golden labrador had diabetes.
As Phoenix said, they have a special diet, need to eat regularly. And she had injections, can't remember how often.
She was about 9 when she developed it and lasted about 2 years more, then got tired. But 11 is almost an average age for a labrador.

My dog is eight, I am not given to panic having been blessed with eleven dogs over the years but the suggestion of diabetes has really thrown me is she was to be diabetic I have no idea what to expect and the thought of injecting her daily terrifies me. I am trying not to think ahead , have nursed my dogs in old age, with cancer, all distressing but had to be done, but this has clicked the panic button

Try not to worry just yet Annie there does seem to be a virus going round. I'm taking my old fellow to the vet at 10.30 as he's been off colour too. He's actually perked up a bit today but I'll still keep the appointment. My granddog who's only a year old has been poorly too.

If it does turn out to be diabetes you will surely cope somehow (((hugs)))

Anniebach Thu 17-Sept-15 10:10:39

Thank you Anya, I am being silly, naturally I have the concerns we with dogs live with but this has really thrown me , I am trying to remain positive

My old fellow has had blood taken this morning. Bill was £120. Results due tomorrow.

Just wish they could tell us what's wrong or where it hurts Annie .

Hope your pooch picks up soon x

Anniebach Thu 17-Sept-15 12:41:42

Hope all is well Anya, it is agony knowing they are unwell yet they can't tell us , I find I even ask - what's wrong ? How stupid

Thanks x

Had a call from Simon (our vet) at 6.00 pm to say the blood test results were back already Annie - my first thought was he's ringing because there's something seriously wrong. But he said no sign of diabetes, liver or kidney problems, but a few of the results showed slight abnormalities, which could mean a bacterial or viral infection or cancer.

As Murphy (my old dog) actually seems livelier by the minute and ate well tonight, I'm thinking an infection. He's going to leave me some antibiotics to see how we goes on and I've to make another appointment for a week Monday.

I'm telling you this as I'm hoping your dog is simply suffering an infection too. Us dog owners understand (even if we don't always agree politically!)

Anniebach Thu 17-Sept-15 23:50:27

Anya, I hope it proves to be a mild infection, thank you for letting me know, I was concerned for your dog, and for you

Iam64 Fri 18-Sept-15 08:26:17

Let's hope it's an infection Anya.
Is there any news yet Anniebach?

Anya Fri 18-Sept-15 08:29:24

How's your pooch today Annie ?

Anniebach Fri 18-Sept-15 10:40:20

No improvement, she will not eat, sleeping a lot, little energy , no surprise as she is refusing all food , she is drinking , doesn't even bark at the postman . Her lungs , heart healthy, her temperature was slightly raised so is on anti biotics. She looks so sad, I am wondering if she could be depressed , the house is so quite now the grandchildren not calling in.

Anyone has/had a dog with depression? I am really worried now , just want to help her

Anya Fri 18-Sept-15 13:19:55

Give her time for the antibiotics to kick in - can be up to 72 hours. Let her sleep and give her cuddles now and then, and don't let her get too hot. I expect her nose is hot and dry?

It's good she's drinking..

You don't live near the New Forest do you?

Anya Fri 18-Sept-15 13:21:17

PS I'd not consider depression until all physical causes ruled out.

Anniebach Fri 18-Sept-15 13:58:37

Nose not hot and dry Anya, not near new forest, in Wales , I will have to wait and hope she picks up soon

Anya Fri 18-Sept-15 20:11:08

I'll be hoping for better news soon.

Iam64 Fri 18-Sept-15 20:56:26

Antibiotics should kick in soon and hopefully she'll brighten up. I think Anya is right to say all physical causes need ruling about before you worry about depression. Make sure you look after yourself Anniebach

Anniebach Fri 18-Sept-15 21:47:27

Thank you Iam, I can rule out depression , she is getting more unwell, I rand the vet, they said - will she be alright until Monday, tomorrow is for emergencies ! Needless to say she is going tomorrow morning for blood tests and every other test they can do in the surgery , so hope she will soon be well. I think I more agitated because last week my grandchildren's dog had to be put to sleep, I spent days comforting them. Anyway , must be positive

Anya Fri 18-Sept-15 22:36:47

Annie so sorry to hear that. This does qualify as an emergency so let's hope they find the cause and treat it. I will be thinking of you and her x

Anniebach Fri 18-Sept-15 23:20:03

Please do Anya, thank you. I feel rather silly getting so worried , will have good news tomorrow I am sure - and yet another big bill, but she is worth it

Iam64 Sat 19-Sept-15 09:03:56

Good Morning Anniebach. I do hope the vet can do something to help your much loved dog. My experience with our old chap was that steroid injections helped him. We had never insured him, he came as a scrappy and unwell rescue aged about 18 months. It took a good few months for his health to improve and he lived a good long and happy life. The last 18 months were expensive though - thinking of you, it's a tough time. x

Anniebach Sat 19-Sept-15 09:39:40

Iam, thank you, she is now in the vets , she became even worse in the night, I am very worried , hsvjng had eleven dogs and nursed them all for different illness and or old age , I have never seen a dog in the condition my girl is in now and it's been so rapid . I will post as soon as I hear from the vet

Anne58 Sat 19-Sept-15 09:55:28

Sending every good wish.
