Morning all.

Clutching at straws here, but I have a very poorly cat and wondered if any of you have dealt with the same issue.

She has been retching/gagging since Sunday evening and until yesterday was also flicking her tongue in and out.

Monday we went to the vet and she had exploratories done.

Her gut was inflamed so they operated on her abdomen, but found nothing.

She came home last night and drank some water, but not eaten.

She's on two meds - one anti-inflammatory and Ranittidene (sp?) as she is full of wind.

She spends her time hiding quietly in a corner and wants to be on her own (very out of character, but understandable at the moment).

She is still doing mini-retches, almost like an unproductive burp.

I slept downstairs with her last night and she had a few little wanders around and then settled down again.

Any ideas as to what may be causing this or what else to do? The vet's on standby to readmit her, but he doesn't have a clue as to the cause.

Help please!

Waterloo It gets even better! She did some very, very croaky miaows in response to me, her eyes were open and she lifted her head a little way, unaided!

Her eyes were definitely not a case of ‘the lights are on, but there’s nobody home’, which they had been until now.

We’re not out of the woods yet, but it’s looking more hopeful. smile

Wonderful to know she has got her voice back, Squiffy. Now we can hope she will go from strength to strength.

So, so pleased to hear that your beloved pusscat has found her voice again. I knew exactly what you meant about her fur looking different. When a cat is poorly, my goodness does their fur reflect how they are feeling. Hard to describe but it just looks all wrong, not sleek and smooth but all over the place. Maybe it is because a sick cat is not doing it's usual grooming regime.
Thank You Squiffy for continuing to keep us all posted. We are all rooting for you both. ???

Waterloosunset Sun 12-Aug-18 20:02:50

Oh Squiffy, I can just picture her trying to respond to you! I am sure she is pulling through because of all the love and care around her and, of course, her fighting spirit! Common fluffball, one small paw step at a time and you will do it ?

Jane10 Sun 12-Aug-18 20:19:51

Lovely for you! Onwards and upwards little puss.

grandtanteJE65 Mon 13-Aug-18 12:57:25

So glad to hear of the improvement, best wishes for its continuation. I am sure both you and the cat want her home soon.

etheltbags1 Mon 13-Aug-18 17:46:37

Hows yr cat

Squiffy Mon 13-Aug-18 18:32:09

Thank you for asking ethel

No miaows for me today, but she had been miaowing earlier.

She’s also been moving her back legs on her own.

One of the Nurses put a smidge of food on her finger and put it in fluffball’s mouth.

She swallowed the food - good news

But ... she clamped down on the Nurse’s finger - not so good!! Nurse now sporting a plaster - oh dear!

The Vet will ring after surgery again tonight with an update on The Plan.

Waterloosunset Mon 13-Aug-18 19:21:06

Well it requires strength to clamp down on the poor nurse’s finger! I am sorry for the nurse but it’s a good sign for pusscat! I feel fluffy is coming through, slowly slowly. Will be interested to hear The Plan. Thank you for the update Squiffy x

Squiffy Mon 13-Aug-18 20:15:50

The Plan is to keep going until Friday and then reassess. The Vet has had one similar case, years ago, which had a happy ending - eventually.

Yes, I thought the same as you waterloo and, luckily, the Nurse took it in good part!

Jane10 Mon 13-Aug-18 20:25:03

Were test results not due back tomorrow?

Squiffy Mon 13-Aug-18 22:16:37

Jane They came back early (Friday) and resulted in a change of antibiotic specific to the infection. That may be why she’s been showing improvement - albeit tiny.

Lovely to hear that she is making progress so far, sending every good wish for more!

Squiffy Mon 13-Aug-18 23:16:52

Thanks phoenix!

Great to know she's still making progress, albeit slowly. A tummy tickle and an ear rub from me.

Sparklefizz Tue 14-Aug-18 11:16:31

Hi Squiffy, the time must be dragging so much for you with having to wait until Friday. I smiled about the vet's finger being bitten. When I was visiting my boy in the vet's hospital every day, I watched a nurse putting on enormous padded gauntlets that went right up to her shoulders. I then heard her getting a cat out of one of the cages which was spitting and growling and clearly the nurses needed armour to deal with him. I guess bites and scratches go with the job. I do hope your lovely girl is still making progress. x

1974cookie Tue 14-Aug-18 17:19:28

Maybe it was the taste of some food after so long that made your pusscat clamp down on the nurses finger thinking there was more to come ?
Squiffy, can you tell us your beloved pusscats' name as it would be lovely to put a name to her.
I continue to send you both lots of hugs ???.

Squiffy Tue 14-Aug-18 18:01:42

cookie I haven't posted my cat's name as it's fairly unusual and I don't want to be 'outed'!

Perhaps we could call her Fluff?

Not much response from her this afternoon, but she looked so relaxed and peaceful that I'll just have to make do with that for today!

Sparkle I love the idea of gauntlets! I can think of a few cats that I've come across in the past who would necessitate those winkgrin

Jane10 Tue 14-Aug-18 18:27:20

Time to try the ultimate treat for cats - Dreamies!!?

Waterloosunset Tue 14-Aug-18 22:20:15

Oh yes Jane - good idea - Dreamies that should do the trick! Squiffy, please tell Fluffy I shall be away until the end of August but I will continue sending her positive get well vibes. I hope she will be back home with you very, very soon where she belongs. Lots of love to you both xxx

Squiffy Tue 14-Aug-18 22:27:23

Well, apparently Fluffy ate a Dreamie from the nurse’s fingers tonight. It’s a good sign, but she shouldn’t be eating them as they contain things that she’s allergic to - I’ll have to check up on that! Still a good sign though that she ate it.

Have a good time away waterloo smile

HildaW Wed 15-Aug-18 11:00:25

Good news Squiffy - although its not a treat I'd use normally as its a bit commercial....but its a bit like giving a poorly child a few dolly mixtures when they've been sick for days, you are just so glad they want it and keep it down!

Jane10 Wed 15-Aug-18 11:06:02

I always think that Dreamies must be like heroin to cats! Even our old boy goes nuts if he so much as hears me open the packet.

millymouge Wed 15-Aug-18 11:16:45

Please keep posting about your dear puss, I have read your post every day and have been so concerned. I know how very much our pets mean to us (have two dogs). Do hope she continues to improve. I wonder if she injested some type of toxin. Will be looking for some updates.

Squiffy Wed 15-Aug-18 11:48:12

Thank you all for your messages smile

Hilda I agree with you about Dreamies etc, but it's the lesser of two evils at the moment!

Milly Yes, that's what the Vet thought from the outset, but we've no idea what it may have been.

The Nurse rang just now and Fluff has eaten 6 Dreamies all by herself!! Now, that is progress indeed!

I'm visiting again this afternoon, so I may be able to witness this miraculous happening!
