There was a conversation at work today which turned to a woman on our team who was not there. She and her partner keep dogs and show them. There was a lot of making fun of the fact that she time and effort in to the shows and saying that she and her partner have nothing better to do and how silly they look in the show ring. I said they are not harming any. one and one of the girls turned on me and said that dog shows are ridiculous, unethical and cruel. Are they harmless fun or do they do damage to dogs at the expense of the owners showing off? Does anyone do dog shows and is there a certain type of person who does them?

I might guess that if you enjoy the showing and running round the ring then the dog would enjoy it too as all emotions pass down the lead to the dog. It would be sad if showing was all they did though, but if it was only a small part of their life it’s not so bad.

I assume if the dogs did not like taking part in dog shows it would be evident in their behaviour, you can tell when a dog is distressed.

I remember going with my children to the East of England show many years ago. There was a couple there showing 3 dogs- when we arrived they were blow drying them. One was dyed pink, one pale blue and on pale green. We were so upset about it, it just felt so so wrong.

What people don't realise, for showing and other competitions- 'serious' competitors at high level do love their dogs, if they win medals for them. The minute they are no longer perfect, and do not perform to the criteria- for some, that is it- they are not interested anymore and want rid.

That applies to hunting dogs too, and those used in blood sports. The dogs are only loved, if and only if.
