Ours will always be the beautiful German Shepard. Loyal. Loving. Protective, big bundle of fun! We have had many over the last 60 odd years. Always well trained! I do love the mini schnauzers although never owned one.

We had a lovely labrador and also a Scottish border collie (beautiful but rather highly strung) but my go to breed now would be a border terrier. I love them. I think I’m too old to take on a dog now but if I did, that is what it would be.

Love all dogs but yo can’t beat the style of Lily my 9 year old cross breed🤣

LilyB14 Sun 19-Mar-23 07:36:45

Looking glamorous even after a walk in the woods!

MawtheMerrier Sun 19-Mar-23 07:38:40

Superfluous question!

kittylester Sun 19-Mar-23 07:42:20

I love Miniature Schnauzers - we have had 2. But my favourite would be basset hounds. We have had 2 of those too and they are the loveliest dogs ever.

We also had an afghan - beautiful but bonkers!!

We won't have any more dogs as they are a tie. We have cats and can just get the cat sitter to pop in twice a day.

Not meant to be- it is breed related and a fact we have become very aware of.

We lost our first Border 7 years ago at age 14. Such happy days. Unfortunately we’re too old to have another dog as much as we’d love to. I miss the cuddles so much.

SueDonim Sun 19-Mar-23 13:39:56

Maw both my DD’s love greyhounds. They’ve renamed them as Skinny Friends. grin

Curlywhirly - you have my sympathy. Our beautiful airedale has just had his twelfth birthday, about the maximum age for a dog of his size. His back legs aren't too good anymore, and he can't jump into the car now, although still loves to go for a walk, but often stops and sits down for a rest. He's such a lovely dog, so good with the grandchildren, we will be heartbroken when his time is up. He's our fourth airedale, so obviously our favourite breed.

Grannybags Sun 19-Mar-23 14:16:56

Aww Bossyrossy he looks just like our old boy Buster. He lived to be 13 but it was his back legs that went eventually.

Such a lovely dog and brilliant with our sons - very good at football!

Bossyrossy Sun 19-Mar-23 14:19:06

Not sure we would be able to afford another Airedale now, the prices are astronomical.

Maxifly1 Sun 19-Mar-23 16:28:13

I've always loved greyhounds and got my girl in May 2020 aged 5 and a half. I'd just retired due to covid, wouldn't want to have had one when working full time. She is so gentle and affectionate with everyone, sleeps a LOT, but is so good on walks and in the house, considering her life in racing kennels.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 19-Mar-23 16:41:16

Bossy, there are a number of Airedale rescues in the UK. Have you googled? You would only need to pay the charity a donation.

Bossyrossy Sun 19-Mar-23 16:55:28

Yes, I have looked at Airedale Rescue. At our age, we would probably want to take on a mature dog, but my main concern is getting a dog who is good with small children. Hopefully, we won't have to go down that road for a while.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 19-Mar-23 17:04:45

I have found rescues to be very good at describing the characteristics of a dog and we always choose older ones. However, most rescues won’t allow adoption by people who have young children visiting, for obvious reasons. It sounds as though you have a dog at present so I too hope you won’t need to consider another for a long time - and by then the children will be older.

I've always adored whippets, greyhounds and lurchers.

tickingbird Sun 19-Mar-23 18:00:26

Rottweiler, Boxer and Bulldog. Had all and hard to choose but something very special about a Rottie. They have an almost human sense of humour.

👏👏👏👏👏
Specially for you and Lovebeigecardigans and anybody else who has lost their heart to these gentle and affectionate nutcases!

I’ve had 3 labs , chocolate. Black and now a fox red , whose one today and is sitting on my feet

PerkyPiggy Sun 19-Mar-23 21:26:57

Labradors. I have a black one laying on my lap right now and her chocolate sister right next to me. However, I also adore Irish Wolf Hounds but I've never owned one. I also like German Shepherds.

MayBee70 Sun 19-Mar-23 21:51:00

valdali

Cocker spaniels ( not golden cockers though as I wouldn't want to risk the heartbreak of "cocker rage"). And black or chocolate labradors.German shepherds. Irish wolfhounds. Parson Russell terriers. Irish setters. Bassetts, Vislas. Cockerpoos. (sorry but how can I choose one?)
Most rescue dogs these days are "bred dogs" as fleurpepper calls them. Doesn't follow that people who pay for a pedigree puppy are less likely to give them up than someone with a mongrel puppy...

Are golden ones still temperamental? When I used to have Blue Roan cockers many golden ones were very nasty and unpredictable due to inbreeding. But people still wanted then in preference to Blue Roans. I’ve switched allegiance to Whippets now because I could never keep on top of the grooming but I still melt when I see a Cocker Spaniel puppy.

Duncan looks adorable WWM but no respecter of plants. I do hope there will be better news than you're anticipating.

Maxifly1 Sun 19-Mar-23 23:03:40

So true! And a whole host of goofy behaviour to make me laugh.

Joseanne Mon 20-Mar-23 08:49:32

🤞 for Duncan at the vet. Will pop by here after work to read any update. ❤️

I’ve only lived a couple of my 73 years without sharing my home with dogs. They have been mostly cross breed rescues but my current two are a blue roan cocker spaniel who joined us aged 10 months and a huge 2 year old lab. I decided against rescue because four young grandchildren meant temperament was key. I was ‘recommended’ by trainer friends to the breeders, both bred for temperament as well as show quality.

The young lab has been a challenge - over large, over friendly (unless you’re a yappy jack Russell) over enthusiastic, in all a big daft lad who is a late maturer 🐕
The blue roan is typical, sweet natured, loves everybody, kind and gentle 🐶
