XL BULLY Ban by the end of the year.

Just seen the news that our PM is going to ban this dog by the end of the year. It’s not the dogs that need banning, it’s the owners and breeders who have no care or interest in these creatures apart from making money and the status to make themselves look good. There’s good and not so good in every dog, it’s how they’re brought up and trained that makes the difference. They’re not born to be nasty. It’s humans again that have failed here.

Wheniwasyourage Fri 15-Sept-23 14:28:33

Some of these dogs are bred to be "nasty". We can't ban the owners from society, but we can at least ban these breeds.

Kate1949 Fri 15-Sept-23 14:38:39

This country is dog mad. Saying you don't like dogs is on a par with saying you are a mass murderer. Its absolutely ridiculous.

KSB23 Fri 15-Sept-23 14:38:43

That’s my point, you can’t blame the dog. It’s down to these irresponsible individuals who called themselves breeders. Ban these idiots then you won’t have ‘nasty’ bred dogs.
XL Bully isn’t even recognised as a breed yet.

Absolutely! I used to love dogs - grew up with them and owned them when my children were at home - but the way things have changed in the last couple of years has put me off them completely. A dog walking field has recently opened next to us and heaven help us if we complain about the disruption it is causing locally.

What an odd thing to say.

May not be that easy as this is not a recognised breed so how do they determine what is an XL bully ?

Quokka Fri 15-Sept-23 16:11:37

Perhaps the way to tackle this is to hold the owners responsible for their dog’s actions. If the dog kills try the owner for manslaughter. A non fatal attack - GBH.

And it’s about time that the police took dog on dog attacks seriously. One man killed by a BULLY was bravely defending his little Yorkshire Terrier.

I was wondering about that. One criterion they could use would be dogs with their ears cropped. It’s illegal anyway but easy to spot.

You are wrong. Just listening to a professor vet, dog behaviourist, all these dogs carry a low level aggressive behaviour. However "docile" these things seem to be, they can be triggered by a seemingly small event, and rip people to pieces. A man was killed yesterday, another innocent killed. Owner now up on manslaughter charges. So they should be.

That is my concern too. They aren’t a real breed. They’re a mixture of breeds so anyone disputing its a bully xl can claim otherwise.

The problem has reached these proportions pretty quickly and all these dogs must, at the very least, be neutered so their bloodline ends.

I have just watched the video of the young boy being savaged (no sound thankfully) and it’s a miracle that boy wasn’t killed.

My thoughts and condolences to the family of the poor man that has died. Just unbelievably tragic.

One has just caused a heavily built man in my town to have 50 stitches when he was attacked at a country pub. It was on a lead but the woman with it couldn’t hold it back.

Just horrendous.

The sooner the better Thank goodness
Any dog that resembles this breed can go as far as I m concerned if in doubt neuter them and muzzle them

Should also bring back Dog Licenses and ensure that you have proper training for any dog you own.
Freya5
No I don’t agree with you. If you train and get to know your dog properly then you’ll understand it,read it’s body language and deal with it as needed by removing it from a situation to prevent confrontation etc. In the past I’ve had 3 dogs all trained correctly. One was a large male German Shepherd another was a male Staffy Cross and a female Collie.

Wheniwasyourage Fri 15-Sept-23 19:25:12

And exactly what good would a dog licence do? How many drug dealers are going to buy one anyway?

You’re talking about good dog owners.A load of people who own XL Bullies and similar are anything but. They’ll never bother with proper training so as an answer ‘ training’ large powerful dogs won’t work. They have to be found and put down. How many more kids and adults and other dogs have to die or have terrible injuries?

XLbullies originated in America, initially as a cross between an American pit Bull and an American Staffordshire Terrier. They’ve been cross bred with other bulldogs, like English bulldogs, olde English Bulldogs and American bulldogs. There are reports of them being crossed with the huge powerful Cane Corso and bull mastiffs. This introduces even bigger stronger dogs into the gene pool.

I support the governments decision to work to a ban but it’s not going to be straightforward. One issue is the owners, many of whom clearly have no idea of how to train or care for any dog. I disagree with people who say no bad dogs, only bad owners. Owners are important but so is the breed. I read half of xl bullies in Britain descend from one American dog ‘Killer Kimbo’
The Telegraph reported that LA based Kimbo was the product of two dogs with the same parents and passed his inbred genes onto hundreds of puppies. Other newspaper reports link this to the death of Keven Jones who bled to death after an attack by his son’s XLBully, both of whose parent dogs were related to Killer Kimbo. There appear to have been a number of children and adults killed by Kimbo’s blood line XL’s

Terrifying

The government are looking at the wrong end of the lead regarding this problem. Put a stop to the backstreet breeder and the advertising or dogs for sale on social media. Dogs should either be available via reputable registered breeders or licensed rehoming charities. Too many dogs have suffered through the hands of irresponsible owners.

Rosie1959 At last! Someone who’s talking sense. Completely agree with you.

👏👏👏👏

All talk of dog licences won’t work. Ear cropping is illegal in UK but these dogs usually have cropped ears and nothing is done so what’s the point of it being illegal? Stop the breeding and selling as Rosie says. I should also add that Pit Bulls are illegal here but there are thousands of them. It’s just not effective.

They are training them - to be aggressive and attack.
They are trained as weapons.

KSB23 Sat 16-Sept-23 10:42:32

That’s a pointless comment. Any breed of dog can be trained as a weapon not just XL Bully’s.

Can you enlarge on this comment Kate1949 please? I don't particularly like dogs but I do take exception to being accused of considering myself a mass murderer!!!!!!

henetha Sat 16-Sept-23 11:01:25

A bit over the top, Kate1949 !

I would like to see a rule, to be implemented immediately, that all dogs considered dangerous should have to wear a muzzle in public. And, yes, ban them too, but that will take time.

Barmeyoldbat Sat 16-Sept-23 11:17:26

X L Bullys are a man made breed from America. The idea was to have a fighting dog, a dog with aggression and these after much tweaking are the result. They have no place in society and certainly should not be out without a muzzle. It doesn’t matter how good the owner is, the dog is powerful and if it wants to break away it will. We need a law straight away that certain breeds must be muzzled for a start, also a law to limit the number of dogs can be walked together at the same time.
