So - rules are there are no rules, no insider footballer info needed - it's just who you think will win, lose or draw - like Paul the octopus in the last World Cup - this is using the brilliance of gransnetters (and CariGransnet's goldfish - named Goldie, of course) to predict who will win the World Cup.

Every morning we post the fixtures for that day for you to post your predictions.

You'll get a point for each correct prediction (win, lose or draw) and for those with a competitive streak, there will be a bonus points option suggested for the day, so you 'fancy' up your entry <ooh>

Every morning we will update our leaderboard, however you're more than welcome to join in at whatever stage. Obviously there's less chance of winning if you join in half-way, unless you're a pro and take part in the bonus rounds!

There will be a mystery prize for the gransnetters with the most points at the end of the World Cup (13 July).

Let the games commence! Post below if you'll be taking part from Thursday.

My predictions are France and Brazil to win.

LucyGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 04-Jul-14 12:31:32

And so we reach the quarter-finals....

Coming up tonight, we have:

France v Germany 5pm BBC1

Brazil v Colombia 9pm ITV

And for the bonus round, just tell us an interesting link between either France and Germany or Brazil and Colombia - preferably something that may make us go "Oooh! I didn't know that...!" grin

Maggiemaybe Fri 04-Jul-14 12:34:39

I think they've been a ray of sunshine Tegan, with all that positive mental attitude! grin Shame they've gone out.

I'm heading for Leeds later to stay overnight for t'Tour de Yorkshire tomorrow (my poor legs will need a rub down on Sunday), so I'll give my predictions for today and tomorrow now. Je suis tres excite (Ah'm reet chuffed).

Germany and Brazil to win today, Argentina and Costa Rica to win tomorrow. football

I might have to forego any challenges, unless they are quick and easy!

Maggiemaybe Fri 04-Jul-14 12:41:17

Ooo, good timing, LucyGransnet!

If you're Belgian, you can move to the States quite easily. There is a fixed quota of 1,350 Belgians allowed US residence visas every year. This limit has not been reached since 1950. Less than half a percent of the foreign population of the US is Belgian.

That's today done! smile

Maggiemaybe Fri 04-Jul-14 12:44:59

Hang on, the US are out aren't they? confused

Pittcity Fri 04-Jul-14 12:47:34

Lucygransnet has different matches to everyone else for tonight confused

My predictions are Germany and Columbia to win.

Don't know which countries to link for the bonus, the ones who are playing or the ones asked for? Will wait and see...

LucyGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 04-Jul-14 13:01:23

Sorry everyone! They are indeed the wrong matches - have updated them now, so please give us your predictions again. Sorry to anyone who was already busy finding interesting links!!

Pittcity Fri 04-Jul-14 13:42:46

In both Brazil and Columbia if a woman wishes to shake hands with a man, she should extend her hand first.

But if you give somebody a wrapped gift it will be opened immediately in Brazil but not in Columbia hmm

Happy2Be Fri 04-Jul-14 14:30:57

France to win
Colombia to win shock

The French region of Alsace has been "switched" so many times between France and Germany over the centuries that it remains a bi-lingual nation with most people speaking French, but around 40 per cent speaking Alsatian, a regional form of German.

Happy2Be Fri 04-Jul-14 14:32:20

Argentina and Netherlands to win on Sunday

rubysong Fri 04-Jul-14 15:03:25

Germany and Brazil to win today.
Bonus facts later (though I probably won't think of any)

rubysong Fri 04-Jul-14 15:23:02

Links: a second class adult four day rail pass for travel in France and Germany costs 299 Euros if bought within 2 months of travel.

The primary agricultural product of both Brazil and Colombia is coffee.
(Predictions posted earlier.)

Good on Germany , my SIL"S brother will be pleased as he drew them in family sweepstake .

Next one at 9pm

Brazil v Columbia, I am rooting for Columbia as DD has them in the sweepstake

Tegan Sat 05-Jul-14 12:03:13

Good job Colombia didn't get through after what they've done to Neymar sad. Wouldn't like to be them at the moment! Guess I'll be rooting for Brazil from now on.

JulieGransnet (GNHQ) Sat 05-Jul-14 12:19:42

Oh, today's fixtures...

It's the QUARTER FINAL football

Argentina v Belgium 17:00

Netherlands v Costa Rica 21:00

Charleygirl Sat 05-Jul-14 12:45:08

Argentina and Netherlands to win

Pittcity Sat 05-Jul-14 13:21:30

Argentina and Netherlands to win.

Wot no bonus? Hooray!!! grin

rubysong Sat 05-Jul-14 13:29:45

Argentina and Costa Rica to win. (last minute change of choice from Netherlands).

kittylester Sat 05-Jul-14 17:25:36

Belgium and Netherlands to win.

They were my first choice so I'm playing fair and sticking with them - despite the fact that Argentina are 1-0 up confused

Tegan Sat 05-Jul-14 17:57:18

Netherlands have been the only team I've enjoyed watching but I still haven't quite forgiven Robben for the other day; however, it'll be interesting to see how often he falls over fom now on wink.

JulieGransnet (GNHQ) Sat 05-Jul-14 21:20:42

Oh... are you ready?

Argentina 1-0 Belgium

The other one's still playing.

Maggiemaybe Sat 05-Jul-14 23:03:50

Just checking that you got my predictions for today, which I gave yesterday in advance at 12.34 (Argentina and Costa Rica) football. It seems so long ago since I posted them!

Hope everyone's having a pleasant and sunshine weekend.

Tegan Sat 05-Jul-14 23:33:34

Can't bear to watch the end of the match....

Charleygirl Sun 06-Jul-14 09:47:29

Between tennis and football I have ended up switching off my TV as I can no longer watch anything.

Tegan Sun 06-Jul-14 10:31:38

I did watch the penalty shoot out in the end as my only football claim to fame is that the Netherlands goalie [the one that came on at the end] is a sort of 'friend of a friend'. And I find Robben mesmerising. Can't help but feel that one of the reasons for so many lacklustre performances over the past few weeks have been due to the extreme heat, but Robben is like a human dynamo whatever the conditions. I must say I have reached saturation point, sport wise now, and shall be glad when life returns to normal [ie BBC4 and trips to the cinema].
