So - rules are there are no rules, no insider footballer info needed - it's just who you think will win, lose or draw - like Paul the octopus in the last World Cup - this is using the brilliance of gransnetters (and CariGransnet's goldfish - named Goldie, of course) to predict who will win the World Cup.

Every morning we post the fixtures for that day for you to post your predictions.

You'll get a point for each correct prediction (win, lose or draw) and for those with a competitive streak, there will be a bonus points option suggested for the day, so you 'fancy' up your entry <ooh>

Every morning we will update our leaderboard, however you're more than welcome to join in at whatever stage. Obviously there's less chance of winning if you join in half-way, unless you're a pro and take part in the bonus rounds!

There will be a mystery prize for the gransnetters with the most points at the end of the World Cup (13 July).

Let the games commence! Post below if you'll be taking part from Thursday.

As I am rubbish at the score predictions I will just say Belgium, Brazil and Russia to win!!

" I'm off to the cafe for a Belgian Bun and some coffee from Brazil,
Hurry up I've got to Russia cos the cafe's at the top of the hill!!"

grin cupcake brew

Genius! This made me chuckle grin

You'll need to post another two poems though, for the other two points! (poem mentioning a country for each fixture)

rubysong Tue 17-Jun-14 12:17:26

Here are my offerings to go with my previous predictions.

Belgium is a lovely place
So many famous persons.
I think there is a cycling chap
But of Jacques Brel I'm certain.

In Mexico they cook their beans
With lots of spice and chilli
And then they dance upon their hats
Which some folk think is silly.

Russia's an enormous land
It flows with oil and money
But if you're short of roubles
The future's not that sunny.

Belgium win

Brazil win

Russia v South Korea draw

I'll get working on the poems when I get home from work. I'm impressed with the entries so far!

Pittcity Tue 17-Jun-14 12:39:11

" Didn't understand the brief because my brain was slow,
So now I've got to write a poem about bloomin' Mexico!!!"

" KatGransnet said I should write again,
This time about Algeria.
Think I'll turn my laptop off
and pretend I didn't hear ya!"

grin

Charleygirl Tue 17-Jun-14 12:45:52

Belgium win

Brazil win

Russia win

Poetry is beyond me.

Ok, here goes -

This is all a bit of a pain
But I really expect Brazil to win again!!

Belgium has to be my choice
Or so says my inner voice

Russia against South Korea will be a draw
As that's what the tea leaves foresaw

Boom boom!!

I deserve double bonus points for that - I've got a headache now!!

Little Belgium could win in the FIFA World Cup
They’ve got Eden Hazard – it must be made up
He sounds like a rock band or a Mills & Boon cad
But if he scores a few goals his fans will go mad.

I wandered lonely as a cloud
Why would this be so?
Every football fan I know
Is watching Mexico.
They’re playing Brazil, the fans will go nuts
If there’s plenty of goals, fouls and saves
I just hope the Mexicans can keep up
While they’re doing their famous waves.

Cabbage soup for dinner, beetroot soup for tea
Oh to be a Baboushka in Mother Russia
Where the wind blows free.

Today's fixtures are:

Australia v Netherlands 5pm ITV

Spain v Chile 8pm BBC1

Cameroon v Croatia 11pm ITV

And for today's bonus points, add a local listing for something associated with one of the countries per fixture (eg. a Spanish restaurant, a zoo with kangaroos for Australia etc)

You can find your local site here: local.gransnet.com

And find out how to add a listing here: www.gransnet.com/gnlocal/gransnet-local-faq

Charleygirl Wed 18-Jun-14 11:11:18

Netherlands 2-1

Spain 2-1

Cameroon v Craotia 2-2

My previous teams have not done me proud, maybe this lot will do better.

I have led a sheltered life so will have to forego the bonus points.

Pittcity Wed 18-Jun-14 11:42:43

Netherlands WIN
Chile WIN
Cameroon v Croatia DRAW

Difficult one for listings but I have added a hotel in *Holland on Sea*

Pittcity Wed 18-Jun-14 11:52:10

There are Chilean flamingos at Colchester Zoo.

Maggiemaybe Wed 18-Jun-14 12:11:48

Netherlands, Spain and Croatia all to win please.

I'll maybe have a go at adding the listings later.

kittylester Wed 18-Jun-14 12:38:50

Netherlands and Spain to win

Cameroon & Croatia to draw.

Local listings when I'm summoned up the courage!!

rubysong Wed 18-Jun-14 13:24:36

Netherlands win
Spain win
Croatia win

Can't see me finding any listings to add.

kittylester Wed 18-Jun-14 14:21:37

I've done a listing for Spain (a tapas bar) and for Australia (a zoo which has lots of Australian animals - not just kangaroos)

Croatia and Cameroon have me stumped! DH did suggest I tried to find a cake shop that sold cameroons confused grin

I could do a link to a travel agent or EM airport but that seems like cheating!

Off for a lie down now - oh, b****r, I've still not done the flipping ironing! sad

Tegan Wed 18-Jun-14 15:28:53

Pinsticking today;
Netherlands win
Spain win
Croatia win

Are you able to post the link on this thread for your listings?

Yes travel agent or airport will do!

kittylester Wed 18-Jun-14 16:22:47

I've added a travel agent. And I still haven't finished the ironing!!

My listings are in various places as we live on the borders of Leics, Notts and Derbys. I wonder if it's a bit odd to have Leicester and Leicestershire (for example) as separate entities as one of my listings would be appropriate to the whole of Leicestershire (and we don't have an editor in either!)

I'll be back later to try to do links on here BUT I really must finish the ironing!

Happy2Be Wed 18-Jun-14 18:50:13

Working late so missed the opportunity to forecast the 5pm match.

Spain and Croatia to win their respective games.

Not got time to provide the links tonight I'm afraid.

Maggiemaybe Wed 18-Jun-14 20:11:04

Right, I've bitten the bullet and learnt how to add local listings and (possibly) how to convert hyperlinks. I'll just have a go:

My first listing is a charity partnership set up by Leeds Trinity's Sports Development Co-ordinator, who volunteers for Cricket without Boundaries as the Cameroon Country Manager.

Maggiemaybe Wed 18-Jun-14 20:16:13

Wayhay, it worked!

My second is a lovely Spanish tapas restaurant.

And my third is the beautiful Victoria Quarter, where there is an UGG Australia shop.

Definitely time for a wine or winewine now to steady the nerves!

Maggiemaybe Wed 18-Jun-14 20:19:56

I have a question though, KatGransnet or Pittcity. Dare I feel free to copy any images, text etc from company websites if I list them on a local site? Or will an angry Victoria Quarter webmaster come marching over in his/her UGGs to give me a right good kicking if I breach their copyright?

LucyGransnet (GNHQ) Thu 19-Jun-14 10:11:07

Hi Maggiemaybe, we don't usually have any problems with pictures on local - their businesses/services are being promoted after all! But if you feel more comfortable not adding a picture in future, that's fine too - we can always add a more generic one for you.

Tegan Thu 19-Jun-14 10:34:59

I can't vote on the games today as won't vote for or against an England win. C'mon England!
