E.ON are trying to make it easier for customers shopping around for a new energy tariff by reducing the number of tariffs it offers to no more than five for customers to choose from. The new tariffs are designed to be simpler and easier to compare with E.ON's new online tool.

Here's what E.ON says about it: 'We know that choosing the right energy tariff can be daunting, so we've simplified our tariffs and launched a new online tool to help make choosing our best deal quick and easy to do in just a couple of minutes'.

E.ON would like you to visit their online energy tariff quote and comparison tool, enter your details and see what deals you're offered. They'd then like you to come back to this thread to give your feedback on the following:

- how you found the comparison tool to use
- what the deals on offer were like e.g. how much you would paying and what rewards you could get

Everyone who visits the tool and then adds their feedback here will be entered into a prize draw to win a £500 John Lewis voucher.

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

There's £500 here to be won by someone who posts on the thread. At present, the odds are about a million times better than the lottery.

(Mathgrans, please don't do the sum and tell me I'm wrong. I haven't actually worked that out. But the odds are rather good.)

Although the look of the site was pretty good, not cluttered and a good font size that made everything easy to read, I was not able to compare with the offering from my current provider. I like the option of having the perks/discounts either as money of your bill or Tesco Clubcard points.

joeypooler Tue 06-Nov-12 02:35:04

I like how it is presented. Very clean and clear.

There is a lot of detail though and i'm just not sure I can fully take it all in.

prwilson Tue 06-Nov-12 03:02:21

I still think it's unnecessarily complicated.

Why does one company charge different unit prices for essentially the same gas?

If prices go up (again) will this affect the comparison?

Why does one company need different tariffs? Just give us the cheapest price.

melandtony49 Tue 06-Nov-12 07:09:01

i can save money in most of the bills but i have always been confused when it comes to gas and electric. the tool does help understand where i can save. i am locked in to mine till jan 2013 so would like to look again and use it then

mpad6869 Tue 06-Nov-12 08:25:11

Easy to use but as confusing as uswitch and others with all the discounts etc.

cinders59 Tue 06-Nov-12 09:31:20

I found it too confusion, I thought the government were suppose to make things more simple, different companies charging different rates for the first watts used etc.

lizd31 Tue 06-Nov-12 10:42:57

Not impressed with it, would still have to compare on other websites. I'm on a special tariff because I'm disabled & have a high usage as I use my heating 24/7 in the winter & there doesn't seem to be any offers for that so I woulnd't get the best deal

petegilb2 Tue 06-Nov-12 10:48:12

I found the site quite difficult and confusing and they should know that there is no gas supply at my postcode really....

also with changing my provider from EDF to Scottish power I really can not see myself changing for some time.

rolybear Tue 06-Nov-12 11:32:17

In honesty i found this extremely confusing and found i had to read and re read constantly to understand what the tarrifs involved and then im still not 100%. I think the idea is a good one but the layout and terminology needs work. Unfortunately i wouldnt be looking to change provider after reading this as is at present im afraid its too confusing i like black and white.

Easy to use and the quotes were good. I'm currently tied in so can't look at switching, but this will be a good tool to use when the time comes. I'm afraid last time Eon lost out because I wasn't able to select my address on their website and because I was using a cashback site I needed to register via a website.

26jibby Tue 06-Nov-12 11:36:10

It seemed very confusing. Organisations need to realise we are not all teenagers who are wizzs on the pc. The simpler the better is my view and that goes with working out the tariffs.

phia44 Tue 06-Nov-12 11:53:34

i'm really not a fan, hard to navigate and i don't like all the adverts. I would definitely stay with switch

mrmshaw Tue 06-Nov-12 11:57:47

Not very good at all.
I couldn't even get a quote as when using my post code and house number it listed every other flat as an option except for my own.

monno2 Tue 06-Nov-12 12:41:09

Confusing. We are Eon customers anyway and have been sent that link on a previous occasion. Didn't understand it then and don't now! What is so hard about providing one simple tariff? You pay a price for what you use!

glmcall123 Tue 06-Nov-12 12:55:58

The site was easy enough to use and as I'm currently an E.on customer I understood the tarriffs. It seemed to be very straightforward, my only problem with the site is that the quotes were based on Ofgem statistics and not my personal usage. I had tick a box confirming that I understood this and the actual cost to me could be different to the quote, so, what was the point of using this site at all.

mrsg Tue 06-Nov-12 14:40:02

Very easy straightforward process but I would almost certainly go through a comparison website to make sure I was getting the best deal - such a minefield out there!

carolvs Tue 06-Nov-12 15:32:39

I'm afraid don't like it as it is far too confusing. How do I know that the 5 tariffs are the best for me? I would still have to go to a comparison site to check against other companies....

jcyclops Tue 06-Nov-12 15:52:22

It's only just better than useless. The layout is fairly uncluttered but no better than others. Overall the site is a bit awkward to use, the response is very slow and several of the links don't work.

1) "Submitting this form means I'm happy with E.ON checking my meter details against industry data" Why? What does this mean? This put me off straight away. If I had the option I would have ticked NO. sad

2) The first quotation is for an "average user" - what use is this? I wanted to see what MY energy costs could be, not some random stranger's. Why does it take so long to calculate it? Does Ofgem average usage change that often? confused

3) "Find out how we’ve used Ofgem averages to get a rough idea of your bill amount." The link doesn't work angry

4) I see the need if you are using "spend" for usage, but why do you need to enter your current supplier and plan if you are using kWh for usage?

5) "The amounts shown above for our new products include this 3% discount, but if you've given us your current plan details we don’t include any prompt payment discount you may receive with your current supplier". This gives me no confidence that the comparison to my existing tariff is accurate - What else are you not including? Online Discount? MDD discount?

6) "If you are aged 60 or over you may be eligible for our Age UK plan. More information." Another link that doesn't work.

Conclusion - I would rather use Uswitch/confused/comparethemarket etc.

On a related matter - it is strange how price increases are always announced as "an average of x%" but my tariffs have always gone up by more than "x%" - sometimes considerably more. I wonder if those on fixed tariffs whose prices don't increase are included in the average so it looks much lower than it really is.

mrslimo30 Tue 06-Nov-12 17:34:17

I find these very confusing and I prefer more than anything to talk to someone who I can translate my understanding to what is on this site and can give me a realistic price

pjfromuk Tue 06-Nov-12 19:06:28

Fairly straight forward but rather too 'generic' . Also quote was far more than current deal. Not enough to make me want to swap i'm afraid! Nice idea thou and would love to win!

pennwood Tue 06-Nov-12 19:25:11

I could not get it to work properly on my iPad. Would it not just be simplier if energy was nationalised as it was previously, and then we would not have all this messing about with prices every few weeks?

Bez Tue 06-Nov-12 20:26:01

Neither could I - get it work properly on the iPad. I put in address and pressed the button and nothing happened except the postcode was added to the first address line. No prices or options for the address came up at all - just the original list still.

Looking at it there seems to be too much information without enough nitty gritty. I decided it looks like a site where you could be fooled into changing over and then find it was more expensive.

libra10 Tue 06-Nov-12 20:48:05

Good to see that Eon have reduced their tariffs to 5, much less daunting than previously.
Plans 1 and 2 are variable, subject to increases, Plan 2 being 3% cheaper than Plan 1. Three percent discount would give just over £30 discount per year for the average energy user, and for this you would have to sign up for 12 months, subject to a cancellation fee if you see cheaper deals elsewhere. Not a brilliant discount!

The further three plans are fixed rates meaning you will not be charged for any energy increases. However, you have to sign into a contract, subject to cancellation fees if you see cheaper deals elsewhere and want to change supplier.

All tariffs offer rewards, such as Tesco Clubcard vouchers or loyalty rewards, I would prefer that overall prices were reduced, without these gimmicky offers.

Eon's tool did not give tariff prices for individual plans which made it difficult to see how they compared with other energy providers. In order to see full details you would have to research further. What are Eon trying to hide?

Overall - great that Eon are simplifying their tariff structure, but they need to be more transparent with what prices they are actually offering, also cut out their loyalty rewards, and reduce their tariffs.

Funkyferret Tue 06-Nov-12 21:00:33

I found it quite easy to use and understand but I feel that's because I use computers a lot. The deals seem unnecessarily complicated and I think I'd rather have straightforward good prices for the basic service than promises of vouchers and reward schemes. At the moment, I have a very good fixed deal and no desire to change so I hope using the EON comparison site doesn't elicit lots of cold calls as opting out of this wasn't very clear.
