It was always one of my favourite quotations, was it Oscar Wilde? He had some brilliant ones.

I think it means - be careful what you meddle in, don't delude yourself by thinking you are doing you are doing someone a favour.

Thank you. It is obviously one we must put our own interpretation on. Personally I prefer sayings to be a bit easier to understand.

I've always taken "no good deed goes unpunished" to be just a humorous take on "no good deed goes unrewarded".

Randomly happened to hear someone on the Radio 4 book programme the other day quote Gramsci who apparently talked about 'the pessimism of the intellect and the optimism of the will'. For some reason it struck a chord with me, I get very depressed by the state of the world and it takes willpower to be optimistic. I think I'd like to amend it to say 'optimism of the heart and will'!

Perhaps it's cynicism. ie Don't expect thanks, rather beware that the recipient of your goodness will probably 'spit in your face'.

I will show just how dense I am but I can't understand "no good deed goes unpunished" and am relying on someone to enlighten me.
