Dr. Laura Slessinger is a well-known conservative talk show host. She has expressed very negative beliefs about homosexuality.
She has firmly supported and advocated biblical morality on her TV and radio shows. The following is a tongue-in-cheek letter seeking Dr. Laura's advice on applying biblical morality and religious duties in today's world. Its author is unknown.
Dear Dr. Laura:
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When people try to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.
I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to follow them:
a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev.1:9).The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7.In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanness (Lev.15:19-24).The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
d) Lev.25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev.11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?
g) Lev.21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
i) I know from Lev.11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread cotton/polyester blend. He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them (Lev.24:10-16)? Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev.20:14)
I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you.
Sorry does that mean it can't be answered on this thread?
No. Absolutely not.
jen, how wise your husband was, he knew 'why me' only had one answer
[Sad] So will never I will never know why religious institions don't sell their gold., silver statues, paintings, land etc etc. To give aid to the people in peril, the starving or to science to help find cures for the sick? That religious places of worshhip lock their doors whilst the homelesss sleep on the steps in all weathers.
I think my post was read the wrong way.
No it does not mean it cant be answered, means it can be answered.
soon! Christians are not blessed anymore than anyone else's! How can you think that? Didn't Jesus preach that a good shepherd loves the lost sheep as much as the others? (I'm not saying non-Christians are in any way 'lost')
Should have read 'anyone else is'
Cherrytree, Jesus has told us what to do, - I was naked and you clothed me, I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was sick and you visited me, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.
Many churches do give shelter to the homeless . The wealth of the churches angers me , I cannot explain it because I don't understand it , I know as a Christian I am to give what I have to those who are poorer than me so I have, many Christians ,other faiths and of no faith have done so too. Some people in this country have offered to have refugee families in their homes
I don't understand what you mean by 'Christians are blessed' soon, would you explain?
Cherrytree many religious institutions do all they can to help the poor. And not all churches are adorned with gold statues. However, it would be a sad day if the world was robbed of the beauty of many of the churches and cathedrals in the world. The soul needs succour too.
Although come to think of it, I can remember feeling some contempt when visiting some of them, for the reasons you describe. So I can see where you are coming from.
I remember all the beggars sleeping rough at night in the road leading to the Vatican. That was shocking.
Jingle , can not the soul find succour by helping the needy , a gold statue may be beautiful but how much more beautiful is the face of a happy child , safe, warm, fed and comforted
Christians are most certainly blessed!
It would take me all day to list their blessings.
I will return later.
Define blessed please.
Yes. I do agree with you Anniebach. But there are all kinds of beauty, some of it man made.
soon, you avoid giving answers , how are Christians blessed? don't need a list which would take all day, try three or four examples
There are jingle and we do need beauty I agree , but do churches need to fill every chapel and recess ?
you avoid giving answers
I am annoyed. And upset too.
I took a long time giving answers yesterday.
soon, you made a sweeping statement , why not explain what you mean , how are Christians blessed?
I had every intention of answering the question. Later today. As i have things to do.
But I have no wish to now.
I soent 1/2 to 3/4 of my day "helping" you yesterday.
No more.
forget it soon,
I had every intention of answering the question. Later today. As i have things to do
But I have no wish to now.
I spent 1/2 to 3/4 of my day "helping" you yesterday
No more
Where on earth has this come from soontobe? It's not like you to "sound" petty ( not saying you are)
I thought you were just being asked for what you consider "concrete" examples of your assertion that "Christians are blessed".
I'll be honest and say I DO think you can be selective about what you respond to directly. It's not nitpicking to ask a person what they mean by a sweeping statement and discussions /conversations are meant to have at least 2 participants, not be a series of "bonus mots/ blanket assertions /cliches/ or Bible quoteations as often happens. Your "truths" may be self evident to you, but it is not unreasonable to ask for clarification or substantiation.
iPad doesn't recognise " bons mots" NOT "bonus"!!!!!
soon and I seem to be confused, soon thought she was helping me and I thought I was helping her to understand I didn't need help
