Dr. Laura Slessinger is a well-known conservative talk show host. She has expressed very negative beliefs about homosexuality.

She has firmly supported and advocated biblical morality on her TV and radio shows. The following is a tongue-in-cheek letter seeking Dr. Laura's advice on applying biblical morality and religious duties in today's world. Its author is unknown.

Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When people try to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to follow them:

a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev.1:9).The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7.In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanness (Lev.15:19-24).The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

d) Lev.25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev.11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

g) Lev.21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

i) I know from Lev.11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread cotton/polyester blend. He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them (Lev.24:10-16)? Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev.20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you.

soon - quoting the bible is not an answer to the questions you are being asked on this thread. It is a cop-out; an excuse not to think. You are being asked what you THINK.

On the issue of evil in the world - some bad things are indeed manmade; and others are part of how the world is. If you believe in a god, then those bad things are as he made them; if you believe in a loving god too, then you are left in a bit of a pickle.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Sept-15 18:15:51

AND DO YOU BLOODY WELL THI NK THAT CHILD IGNORED HIS FUCKING TEACHINGS?

No one will sort this world out except man. On his own. Because that is all there is.

Anniebach Fri 04-Sept-15 18:17:33

Who should be struck by the thunderbolt jingle? Those at war , those in the Christian west who will not give shelter to the needy?

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Sept-15 18:18:29

Should have said children. We mustn't forget his big brother. Aged all of five.

And the others.

"Suffer the little children" !! Ha!!! hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Sept-15 18:19:40

Assad whats-'is-features would be a start.

Anniebach Fri 04-Sept-15 18:21:58

What turns people into monsters ?

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Sept-15 18:44:06

They are born that way.

Elegran Fri 04-Sept-15 18:47:14

If God can bend the rules of the universe sometimes for people who have shown particularly strong faith in him, then he could change the rules permanently for everyone.

Anniebach Fri 04-Sept-15 19:05:33

Jingle, I don't believe people are born evil

granjura Fri 04-Sept-15 19:20:54

Elegran- indeed. Perhaps you and I have made a choice not to remain or become Christian- many in the world have never heard of the Bible or Jesus- in some of the poorer parts of the world- and this was almost 80% more so 2 generations ago. How do they choose? What about all those born and 'bred' in other religions?

Luckygirl Fri 04-Sept-15 19:38:56

Why not me? - that is the stance of most agnostics. If there is no god planning what is going on then everyone is equally likely to be struck by tragedy. It is a tough reality.

soontobe Fri 04-Sept-15 19:40:11

jingl. What I have written is to do with Anniebach.
It is not to do with children in general.
It is definitely not applicable to non christians.
There would even have been different answers if Anniebach's husband was not a Christian.

Elegran. Yes he could change the rules permanently for everyone. But he is not going to. He hasnt so far!
And therein lies part of humanity's problem.
A problem from the earth point of view in that we all suffer consequences from that.
And a problem from a when we die point of view, going by what is in the Bible.

granjura, the Bible assures us that all will hear the message at some point[I will look that bit up at some point, but I expect you can find it if you google it].

Luckygirl - I think what I have written.

I agree with Anniebolt re thunderbolts etc.

Eloethan and others. I may reply to the posts at some point.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Sept-15 19:43:30

What is "not applicable to non-Christians"? confused

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Sept-15 19:44:18

Do you think Christians have some kind of special priviledges from God?

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Sept-15 19:45:31

there's no 'd' is there hmm

Anniebach Fri 04-Sept-15 20:07:06

Luckygirl, i can only speak for myself, I don 't expect special treatment from God

absent Fri 04-Sept-15 20:35:33

Another thread hijacked in the same way as so many before. It is becoming extremely tedious.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Sept-15 20:42:15

Oh for goodness sake absent. We're human beings on here. Can't you understand that? Probably not. hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Sept-15 20:44:15

Do carry on discussing this oh-so-clever letter someone copied off of the internet. I would hate to deprive you.

soontobe Fri 04-Sept-15 22:25:28

Christians are blessed jinglbellsfrocks.

soontobe Fri 04-Sept-15 22:27:11

I do hope I have been some help or use to you Anniebach.

durhamjen Sat 05-Sept-15 00:11:59

Anniebach, when my husband was told his brain tumour could not be cured, one of our sons asked him, "Why you, haven't you got enough problems already?" to which my husband replied, "Why not me?"

Cherrytree59 Sat 05-Sept-15 00:34:57

I'm wondering what Jesus would say about our problems at present with poor desperate people having to flee from dictators + war torn countries? What would he say about all religious leaders with their gold statues. paintings worth a small fortune. What would he say about all the religious places of worship who close their doors every night whilst the homeless. Sleep outside in all weathers???

soontobe Sat 05-Sept-15 08:14:31

There was a discussion about this, I think part way through the refugee thread.

soontobe Sat 05-Sept-15 09:12:57

Not sure whether to leave other posts on here unanswered? Or do some posters want their posts responded to?
