Dr. Laura Slessinger is a well-known conservative talk show host. She has expressed very negative beliefs about homosexuality.

She has firmly supported and advocated biblical morality on her TV and radio shows. The following is a tongue-in-cheek letter seeking Dr. Laura's advice on applying biblical morality and religious duties in today's world. Its author is unknown.

Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When people try to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to follow them:

a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev.1:9).The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7.In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanness (Lev.15:19-24).The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

d) Lev.25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev.11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

g) Lev.21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

i) I know from Lev.11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread cotton/polyester blend. He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them (Lev.24:10-16)? Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev.20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you.

I do not think that is so - at least not this "people"!

Soop has been advocating a literal interpretation of the bible (although seems not to have heard about original sin??) and I am trying to point out that this is dangerous - both for the bible and any other religious text, as they often reflect the power brokers and vested interests of their generation of writing.

The slaughter of the crusades and the mayhem being cased by ISIS are prime examples and should stand as a warning about the dangers inherent in religions, which deal in fundamentals and cannot but help leaning towards fundamentalism. I find it terrifying.

I am sure soon is a lovely kind lady, but it is her sort of views that are the basis of this sort of misery.

As will be clear from my posts, I have no problem with religious people who read their texts with their brains switched on and seek the true heart of the message - which is invariably about love and kindness. It is clear Annie that this is where you are coming from; and indeed where my many religious close friends are coming from too.

Anniebach Fri 11-Sept-15 11:17:11

My mistake Luckygirl so apologies , need to get my brain in gear

Luckygirl Fri 11-Sept-15 11:27:30

Annie - I really like your "religion of one" - it sounds like a good way to live! smile

Anniebach Fri 11-Sept-15 12:01:00

Gets me into trouble often Luckygirl , would make life easier to fall into line

As this is about sticking to the scriptures as soon chooses to do, and I respect her decision - an example of the hurt it can do

When the AIDS panic flared up I was at a prayer meeting for the sick and troubled . The AIDS fear came up in the meeting, good people wanted gays stopped from sharing Holy Communion in our church , homosexuality was a sin but the fear of AIDS suddenly brought it to mind ! I was jumping, hoping mad and said if homosexuals were to be asked not to share the wine or have a seperate communion service I asked that I be included in the names of those who were to be excluded . These gays already had the terror of this illness hanging over them and now were to be treated as lepars . This is what sticking firmly to scripture can do

Sorry a personal post again but if it helps one person to think then worth any sarcasm which may come

Luckygirl Fri 11-Sept-15 12:23:40

Exactly the problem Annie - well done you for sticking to your guns; indeed standing by the oppressed - is that not in the bible somewhere?!

Anniebach Fri 11-Sept-15 13:09:34

It's what Christ taught Luckygirl

Luckygirl Fri 11-Sept-15 13:56:54

So why did not your religious colleagues have that in their minds? - it is such a shame and as you rightly say, a prime example of what sticking to scripture can do.

A vicar friend of mine has a transsexual child - she is loved and accepted and supported in her decisions.

soontobe Fri 11-Sept-15 15:12:42

The Bible, as far as I know, doesnt say anything against bieng transsexual.

There is though against dressing up in clothes of the opposite sex.

The two are quite different things.

Luckygirl Fri 11-Sept-15 15:17:59

Oh dear - I had better take of my jeans and slip into a nice tea dress!

Alea Fri 11-Sept-15 15:21:00

So do you never wear trousers or jeans soontobe?

Ana Fri 11-Sept-15 15:24:03

Didn't they all wear robey things anyway in Biblical times?

Luckygirl Fri 11-Sept-15 15:24:15

Soon - please feel free to address the comments about homosexuality and fundamentalism raised above.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 11-Sept-15 15:24:45

Perhaps she just doesn't wear men's trousers. hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 11-Sept-15 15:27:36

Look! If soon reads it in the bible that homosexuality is sinful, then that is her business. No one else's. hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 11-Sept-15 15:29:08

Left half of that post out. "and she accepts that and agrees with it"...

soontobe Fri 11-Sept-15 15:30:16

Alea. rthey are womens jeans and womens trousers.

Ana. I think so? Not sure.

Luckygirl. I am not apt to repeat myself. There has been a whole thread on the subject.

Anniebach Fri 11-Sept-15 15:30:48

Does not a transsexual wear clothes of the opposite sex from the sex they have bern registered as ? So not a different thing surely ?

Get that dress on Lucky, I though will stay in my jeans

Anniebach Fri 11-Sept-15 15:34:55

Jingle, if you had read my post in which I said I respected soons choice there would have no need for you to give out instructions on what others should or should not accept

Juliette Fri 11-Sept-15 15:35:24

Deuteronomy Chapter 22 verse 5. My BIL's favourite text!!

soontobe Fri 11-Sept-15 15:37:01

Different thing Ab.

Alea Fri 11-Sept-15 15:41:03

I would imagine that if you looked hard enough there would be an OT pronouncement on gender but maybe they just stoned them first, so it he issue didn't really arise.
I find Jewish pronouncements on women covering their heads and only letting their husbands see their hair a curious anomaly, especially whenI see many women in and around Hampstead/Golders Green in very obvious wigs.
However, they do not seek to impose their strictures on us Gentiles so I shouldn't really complain.

Anniebach Fri 11-Sept-15 15:41:06

Nothing about uni sex clothes in Deuteronomy that I can recall
Juliette, so who is in and who is sinning, male or female grin

Anniebach Fri 11-Sept-15 15:42:04

Why different soon?

Alea Fri 11-Sept-15 15:42:47

You say "women's trousers" soontobe, in the days of Joan of Arc just wearing breeches was seen as heresy, so you could argue that there is no such thing as "women's men's garments"

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 11-Sept-15 15:50:36

I was replying to the most recent posts ab. I most certainly haven't read much of this silly, backbiting, thread. And I will post what I like whether you consider there is a "need" for it or not. Ok?
