God and war

I am starting this thread because there seems to be huge differences between what people think, and what is actually in the Bible about this.

God is slow to anger. And in the Bible seems to give people multiple chances to repent.

But he is not a pushover, and war was quite frequent in the Bible.

I in no way know everything about this subject, but wanted to start a discussion anyway.

If there was a Christian God, I would never accept that He would believe in a just war. That as well as the bible is simply human construct.

I am not sure really any I am posting as I find it all such nonsense I am afraid.

soontobe Tue 03-Nov-15 21:21:43

As it isnt nonsense, there is a problem.
Which is why people like me feel compelled to not keep quiet about it. If only.

Luckygirl Tue 03-Nov-15 22:12:40

Nonsense indeed. How very dreadful it is when people use religion as an excuse for war and acts of hate. Just as the muslim terrorists misinterpret their religion in a twisted way, so we see the same happening with the Christian religion.

No more from me on this thread - it is far too sickening and inhuman.

soontobe Tue 03-Nov-15 22:22:51

I totally agree when people use religion as an excuse for war and acts of hate, that is beyond dreadful.

If anyone twists what is written in the Bible, that is just as bad or worse than with other religions which do not want war and hate also.

Perhaps you could look into joining a Christian website of some sort, soontobe, on which such threads might be more welcome.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 03-Nov-15 22:26:17

That's not really fair. soon has posed this on the 'religion/spirituality' forum. We don't have to read the threads.

soontobe Tue 03-Nov-15 22:26:37

If people dont want to debate this, that is fine.

soontobe Tue 03-Nov-15 22:27:41

x post.
But thanks anyway jinglbellsfrocks. smile

Ana Tue 03-Nov-15 22:29:29

You're right, actually jingl. Just seems as though soon's setting herself up for a bit of a bashing here, that's all. But I'm sure she's up for it smile

Just think what life was like in the early days and how it is now. From small tribes fighting each other, to smaller kingdoms, then nations, now groups of nations. There is a progression. England and France were enemies right up to a few years before the First World War, now it is unthinkable that we would take up arms against them.

I think wars will end soon. Weapons have become so devastating and it is getting harder to kill your 'enemy' without harming yourself and the environment. Before too long everyone will see that it is better to sort out problems by talking - look at Syria, we have actually got Iran, Russia, Arabs, and the USA talking and more or less agreeing with each other. They may not become bosom buddies for a long time yet but it is progress.

If not, then maybe a threat from outer space will have the effect of knocking our heads together so that we will all recognise that we are all one family sharing the same one planet and (those who believe in Him), worship the same God whatever name they use for Him.

While God is" Slow to anger and gives time to repent". People are being killed tortured and maimed perhaps it would be better if he did get Angry quicker!

Cherrytree59 Wed 04-Nov-15 00:35:32

Its a bit like Nero watching Rome burn
God watching humanity wiping each other out
Earth would have been much better place with 'soulless' animals and plants
Much less for him to get angry with and no need for redemption!

LullyDully Wed 04-Nov-15 03:05:32

Reminds me of a very poignant Bob Dylan song. Problems come when we allow the "Godless" to take over the World. ...I mean this in a humanist way not a religious one.

Thank God Hitler lost albeit after so many millions of cruel deaths.

Will read this thread later, just wish to put in the full verse which soon started this thread - soon claims God is slow to anger , this is in full -

I am a God to anger and abounding in steadfast love .

Anniebach Wed 04-Nov-15 09:26:24

And I missed out slow, sorry

soontobe Wed 04-Nov-15 09:56:17

There are many verses about it Anniebach. I was far from thinking about just 1.

www.biblegateway.com/quicksearch/?quicksearch=slow+to+anger&qs_version=NIV

This is what I mean about taking the whole Bible into consideration, not just homing in on the parts a person likes.

soontobe Wed 04-Nov-15 09:58:44

Perhaps you only know 1?
Perhaps you are only taught 1?

soontobe Wed 04-Nov-15 10:05:45

Cherrytree59 and LullyDully I agree with you.

starbird, I agree with you except about the part about wars. In the BIble it does say that there will always be wars and rumours of wars

Anniebach Wed 04-Nov-15 10:28:24

soon, I have read the bible many times, you choose to dwell on a God of retribution , vengeance , wrath, all very Old Testament because this is the part you like . You believe God reaps revenge upon the innocent because of the actions of their ancestors I do not, I am a Christian I try to follow the teachings of Christ not the laws of Leviticus , there is no joy in your faith

Let us take the Ten Commandments

2. I The Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, but showing mercy to thousands to those who love me and keep my commandments. OLD TESTAMENT

NEW TESTAMENT

Christ when asked which of the ten was the greatest replied
love The Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind, and the second is like it. Love your neighbour as yourself. All The law and the prophets hang on these two commandments .

I no more pick and choose than you soon, I choose to follow Christ and in my opinion , a lot harder way to live one's life because one has to question every action one takes .

I do not believe God will seek revenge on the descendants of those who do not believe in him, you do, such fear has emptied churches soon

soontobe Wed 04-Nov-15 10:43:39

If you dont pick and choose, why did you choose 1 part, and not the other 9 at least, when according to you, you know the others exist?

And why do you follow the teachings of Christ, while utterly ignoring the teachings of God.

You do know that God sits on the throne, and Jesus sits at his right hand?

God cannot be ignored. Well he can, but at someome's peril.

soontobe Wed 04-Nov-15 10:44:41

And then there is the book of Revelation. Which is in the New Testament, and the very last book.

soontobe Wed 04-Nov-15 10:47:04

Following Christ and God is a harder way to live than just following Christ. Common sense tells us that.

Doing and following what is right is more important than "bums on seats" as the expression goes.

Anniebach Wed 04-Nov-15 10:47:31

No way am I going to discuss revelations soon, no other book can be twisted as much as that one .

soontobe Wed 04-Nov-15 10:48:06

I very much doubt whether you are more joyful than I going by your posts across gransnet.
