Struggling with my Christian belief

(307 Posts)
hapgran Sun 19-Mar-17 17:06:44

I am a practicing Christian, but becoming increasingly upset with the thought that, if I am to believe in hell, then that is where my non-believing children and grandchildren are going. I think this could turn me away from my faith as I can't bear it. Any thoughts out there..?!

Thank you Gabriella for your lovely response to my post.

It's I who thank you for confirming, by way of your comment, that although we do not always like what our children do or how they act, we mothers can love them still but move on for our own peace of mind.
If you hope, somewhere in your heart, for a rapprochement on better terms, that is also my wish for you.
Take care. smile

I will read more of Bishop Spong and J John so thank you for your recommendations. Just for the record, my grandchildren are all under 9 so I do not know yet what their beliefs will be. I suppose I was making assumptions based on the fact that none of my offspring or their partners currently believe in any God. We do not talk about it - they know where I stand but I never ram it down their throats!

This is really interesting. I'm a Radio documentary maker for the BBC, and we would like to interview grandmothers with a faith and their teenage granddaughters who don't have a faith, for a programme. Is anyone here interested to find out more? If you are, please email me on kristine.pommert(at)ctvc.co.uk

Apologies for deviating from the general nature of postings, but I find that events like the bombings in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday are just irreconcilable with the idea of a loving god - those people were innocent and included many children. How can you all sustain your faith in that context?

Smileless2012 Wed 24-Apr-19 17:14:04

Because it wasn't God who carried out the bombings.

I'm struggling here - so god made man with free will so (s)he can do any horrendous thing - so what exactly is it about god that people are worshipping?

Smileless2012 Thu 25-Apr-19 13:48:01

Yes, God gave us free will and a conscience so that we could make our own decisions. We are His children and God, through his prophets and through the lessons taught by His son Jesus and His ultimate sacrifice on the cross, sort to teach us right from wrong, just as we do with our own children.

The free will we were given was to enable us not only to decide how we choose to live, but to choose whether we wish to love Him.

True love cannot be bought or forced, it must be freely given.

There was a French Priest that would stay in a Buddhist Temple and Meditate. He said it made him a better Christian. There are some good talks at this English site. www.amaravati.org/

Your dilemma is common, many have children and grandchildren who do not believe in God, they have been taught this at school. All you can do is to continue giving a good example for them to follow, and pray for them.

If you are upset with the morals that Christianity holds, you are just showing you have a decent moral sense as compared to those who hold fast to Christianity, a homophobic and misogynous religion that somehow thinks that a genocidal son murdering god is a good god.

Look to Gnostic Christianity for the real and moral view.

It was and is said that the only good Christians are Gnostic Christians and it is mostly true.

There's a difference of the Gospel which means Jesus and the Religion?

Being a Christian is not just a religion it's your personal relationship with God.

Religion can't change you, can't satisfy you but the Gospel require the true repentance. Touch and change your heart and turn away from evil ways and thoughts.

You are correct to a point, but god is wise and for you to have the relationship you seek, you need the wisdom to understand him.

Your own bible tells you that if you want to perfect your wisdom on god, you have to get out of the Christian ideology.

You seem to be ignoring it.

Hebrews 6 King James Version; 1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

It is indeed, but you will note that if you go by the standard Jesus set for faith and belief in him, there are none with faith or belief.

Jesus said that those who had that could do all he could and more. No Christian has ever shown he has real faith of belief, if you go by what Jesus said.

Honesty seems hard to find in Christians, says Jesus.

Gnostic "Honesty seems hard to find in Christians, says Jesus". The first time the followers of Jesus were called Christians was in Antioch, where Barnabas and Paul taught. This was sometime after the death and resurrection of Jesus, so Jesus would never have used the term Christians.

See Acts 11 v 26.

"It was and is said that the only good Christians are Gnostic Christians and it is mostly true" really! by whom?

Gnostic God did not murder his Son.Jesus willingly gave himself up as an act of Atonement. It could be said that he deliberately brought about his own death by provoking the Jewish leaders.Remember he was a man of his times with the thought forms of those around him.He had a mission and he fulfilled it

As I suspected, you were unable to answer to my question Gnostic; "by any who study the various ideologies" is not an answer.

You speak of "swollen egos", perhaps a look in a mirror may be in order.

I'm with you Greenfinch, there's nothing to be gained by giving oxygen to Gnostic's posts. Tonight I shall in my prayers thank God that I am a Christian and haven't been indoctrinated and corrupted by the ramblings of the Gnostic 'Christian ideology'.

I can now understand why St. John the apostle, walked out of the baths in Ephesus, when Cerinthus the early gnostic walked in.

The gnostic heresy has this advantage, that it implies no problem of evil.
