Granddaughter in Intensive Care

We got a call from our daughter just before coming to bed to say our six year old granddaughter is in hospital, for the second time in three months. We were able to see and speak to our granddaughter and she was on oxygen and antibiotics then, but she was finding breathing difficult. I’ve now just had a text to say she’s been moved to Intensive Care (she’s in NZ).

She had double pneumonia and a collapsed lung last time and although she became really very poorly she didn’t deteriorate anything like as quickly as she has done today. She has a compromised immune system having been born extremely prematurely and I’m concerned that the struggle to breathe may affect her heart.

So please, if you’re a pray-er would you pray for her? ?? She needs all the help she can get.

GA

Great news!

I think that if she is a candidate to be moved, it is a good sign.

UPDATE

Better news today is that the new treatment seems to be having an effect. ? ??

The pattern seems to be that it’s at nighttime that our granddaughter gets into real difficulties, but last night, although she did become hypoxic (not enough oxygen), it was not as bad as on other occasions.

The ICU is so busy they’ve had to put extra beds in and so our daughter says that if our granddaughter improves she’ll be moved back to a side ward again. On the one hand it’s really traumatic for her in the ICU, so I’d love for her to be well enough to be moved, but I really want her to stay there if she’s likely to need the extra facilities. Aaargh!

I can’t quite get my head around the fact that it’s possible for our granddaughter to be able to leave the ICU when she literally can’t breathe for herself, not even for a minute. I don’t want to ask my daughter too many questions as she’s ‘mummy’ and not an ICU nurse in this situation, but it’s a constant concern.

Good post Grandmafrench. You've put it well. Thinking of you and your family GA.

Grandmafrench Sun 04-Jul-21 09:36:31

Don’t give up on positivity, ga and remember what GranPower can do. Every single one of us empathising, sympathising, wishing so hard for her.

Maybe her move was a little too soon? Just as long as they’re on the case and her care remains at a high level, any small improvement - or blip- will be monitored until she stabilises. Just believe it’s going to be ok. ???

UPDATE:
News in the middle of the night was that granddaughter had been taken off IV antibiotics and was receiving them orally, was beginning to drink again and although still on oxygen and unable to breathe for more than a minute by herself, was deemed well enough to be moved off ICU and into a side ward.

I just had a distraught text to say that she’s had another deterioration and there is a review underway to discuss taking her back to PICU. I feel so sad for my little NZ family and so, worried for them.

One of our little grandchildren is having a 4th birthday party today and so at least we’ll be together as a family as we wait for news.. We’ll make sure the birthday child enjoys his day, but our thoughts are going to be on the other side of the world, as they have been since our granddaughter was admitted.
