I love many of the old hymns but particular ones stay in my mind. We went to Rarotonga just before Covid hit and in the church there they gave a wonderful rendition of ‘How Great Thou Art’ which brought tears to my eyes. I also love ‘The old wooden Cross’ and ‘It is Well with My Soul’.

Immortal, Invisible
Praise Him Still, the King of Heaven
The Lord's My Shepherd
The King of Love My Shepherd is.

Blinko Wed 07-Sep-22 18:33:42

Oops, should be Praise My Soul the King of Heaven.

My late husband, though a very much lapsed catholic, loved
''Ave Maria''.
We had it at the beginning of his funeral service.

It’s good just reading the names of all these wonderful hymns, which seem far away from me now but just their titles invoke lovely memorable feelings, and I’m singing them silently to myself now with Joy. Thanks Nanna 8

I like ‘ We Plough the Fields and Scatter’ it reminds me of school harvest festival and all the lovely baskets of produce decorated with colourful crepe paper. Also, How Great Thou Art, Elvis’s version is brilliant.

So many! Especially:

I heard the voice of Jesus say
Amazing grace
Here is love, vast as the ocean
O for a thousand tongues
And can it be
My Jesus, I love thee

I do remember some from school that other people have mentioned, like

When a knight won his spurs
Hills of the North, rejoice
Daisies are our silver
He who would valiant be

Greyduster Wed 07-Sep-22 20:02:09

Gosh yes! ‘Hills of the North’ was one of my favourites at school. How could I have forgotten it!

Greyduster Wed 07-Sep-22 20:03:53

I’ll have that as an ear worm now, Skye17, you can bet!!

I'm not religious, but I'll go to church IF I feel like it, which is rare or for funerals. But I do like -
.Onward Christian Soldiers (it was my dads favourite)
.Morning Has Broken
.All Things Bright and Beautiful
& lots of Christmas carols

nadateturbe Wed 07-Sep-22 20:22:33

Forth in Thy Name
Good one to start the day..

I also love
The day Thou Gavest.

GeorgeKirrin Wed 07-Sep-22 20:37:35

I'm also a lapsed methodist so I have a huge repertoire of wonderful hymns to call on
I have so many favourites but can probably claim these three as the top ones

Dear Lord and Father of Mankind
The day thou gavest
O Love that will not let me go.

I often ask Alexa to play hymns for me and sing along while working from home.

Grayling Wed 07-Sep-22 20:45:54

By cool Siloam's shady rill
There is a green hill far away
Channel of your peace
I come to the garden

And most of the ones mentioned above.

Margiknot Wed 07-Sep-22 20:55:10

I’m a lapsed Methodist too. The words of many hymns come back even when not sung for decades- but I can’t seem to remember what I went upstairs for! Dear Lord and Father of mankind was a favourite and still is. Lord dismiss us with thy blessing, God be with us till we meet again.

I love
Sweet Sacrament Divine,

O Sacred Heart,
and
For ever with the Lord, Amen! so let it be
and
Bring flowers of the rarest
The last hymn, to Our Lady, can be heard here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWMEsCT8xZw you should listen the sisters sing it so lovely.

Lovetopaint037 Wed 07-Sep-22 22:33:49

Lord of all Hopefulness.
Morning Has Broken which I chose for my parents funerals.

BigBertha1 Wed 07-Sep-22 22:43:01

We both love Dear Lord and Father of Mankind. I love Christmas carols.

nanna8 Wed 07-Sep-22 23:49:00

It’s amazing how they come back to you, isn’t it? I used to go to a church that only sang the old hymns, nothing else and I so miss that aspect of that particular church. The one I go to now has a mix of old and new but mainly new. I am getting used to the newer ones but they don’t have quite the same stirring qualities if you know what I mean. Not the same associations, anyway. I hope these lovely old hymns don’t die out.

"GeorgeKirrin" I forgot Oh Love that will not let me go. Beautiful hymn.

I have YouTube hymn playlists.

henetha Thu 08-Sep-22 09:33:45

I love the words of Dear Lord and Father of Mankind. They are so calming.

MiniMoon Thu 08-Sep-22 10:00:58

And can it be that I should gain
In Heavenly Love Abiding
I heard the Voice of Jesus say

There are so many lovely old hymns

I'm a lapsed Methodist too, by the way. There seem to be a lot of us here.

MiniMoon Thu 08-Sep-22 10:02:20

I forgot,
Hear us Oh Lord, from Heaven Thy dwelling place.

Chocolatelovinggran Thu 08-Sep-22 10:45:43

I'm a church goer so sing many of these hymns on a regular basis. Greyduster, I learnt that Vaughan Williams was instrumental in rearranging familiar tunes to meet the words of hymns, many of which we sing today. One of them was the melody of the Ballad of Maria Marten in the Red Barn, which, in original form, tells of murder and the hanging of the guilty party!

Caleo Thu 08-Sep-22 10:54:52

For All the Saints (splendid tune)

To Be a Pilgrim ( I believe it)

The Spacious Firmament on High ( its science is nonsense but the imagery and tune are evocative)

All the old Christmas carols.

How great though art is one of my favourite hymns

Sparklefizz Thu 08-Sep-22 11:56:17

Thanks nanna8 for this thread. Reading through all the hymn titles has brought back wonderful memories of schooldays and onwards.

"Dear Lord and Father of Mankind" - Hymn No. 481 - imprinted in my memory - always a school favourite. And just to read the title "We Plough the Fields and Scatter" immediately brings visions of the school Harvest Festivals.

I am loving this thread.
