Now here is a truly brave woman, who has put her career on the line here, as a true Christian who really understands what Christianity is about.

Trump, Malania, Vance and families, were just trapped there, and could not walk out or stop her. Stunning and so full of humanity.

Now this is encouraging.

After the sycophantic way people were bobbing up and down listening to Trump's smug speech it was so refreshing to hear this courageous, compassionate woman.. and yes amusing to watch Trumps rigid expression..

I hope she doesn't suffer any repercussions

Christian compassion is wrong to some people, it seems, and clerics who promote it are seen as in need of " educating". What a time we live in.

Claremont Wed 22-Jan-25 09:19:51

Yes, I am concerned for her. I do believe she is fully aware and has thought about it very long and hard- and decided extremely bravely, that she would say what she had to say.

The trans bit is what I don’t condone. Born in the wrong body?

I’m with JKR on this issue. And the Cass report.

In some cultures being a male ‘gay’ would be very problematic. So a young male who fancies boys daren't tell his family so being ‘born in the wrong body’ becomes acceptable. Let’s not forget that in Afghanistan for example, gays would be shoved of a roof to their death.

Being ‘born in the wrong body’ therefore swerves the ‘gay tag’ and those families can come to terms with that a bit better.

She was not making a speech about gender - she was talking about compassion. How anyone could possibly have missed that point is beyond me.

MissAdventure Wed 22-Jan-25 09:25:39

Bloody marvellous speech, I thought.
All she did was hold up a mirror onto Trump.

Best to ignore those trans rants, honestly. It was NOT what the address was about, at all.

Done a bit of research about the Bishop, and she has written a book about how to become brave, published by Penguin. I am not a Christian, but I will purchase the book and read it asap.

About How We Learn to Be Brave

An inspirational guide to the key junctures in life that, if navigated with faith and discernment, pave the way for us to become our most courageous selves, by the bishop of the famed Episcopal Diocese of Washington, D.C.

The decisive moments in life are those pivot points when we’re called on to push past our fears and act with strength. With How We Learn to Be Brave, Bishop Mariann Budde teaches us to respond with clarity and grace even in the toughest times. Being brave is not a singular occurrence; it’s a journey that we can choose to undertake every day.

Here, Bishop Budde explores the full range of decisive moments, from the most visible and dramatic (the decision to go), to the internal and personal (the decision to stay), to brave choices made with an eye toward the future (the decision to start), those born of suffering (the decision to accept that which we did not choose), and those that come unexpectedly (the decision to step up to the plate). Drawing on examples ranging from Harry Potter to the Gospel According to Luke, she seamlessly weaves together personal experiences with stories from scripture, history, and pop culture to underscore both the universality of these moments and the particular call each one of us must heed when they arrive.

With Bishop Budde’s wisdom, readers will learn to live and to respond according to their true beliefs and in ways that align with their best selves. How We Learn to Be Brave will provide much-needed fortitude and insight to anyone searching for answers in uncertain times.

I wonder what Musk thinks of Trump's stance on transgender - hasn't he got a transgender child?

I think I read that Musk disowned this child - a boy who transitioned to be a girl - “I’ve lost my son”.

Luckygirl3 Wed 22-Jan-25 09:33:03

I am not a practising Christian, or indeed any other religion, but it was clear to me that she was telling him that Christianity is not a label for him to use for his own ends, but a doctrine that challenges its followers to live compassionate lives - he was not listening in any real sense, but she was brave a right to speak out.

Thankyou Claremont.. and thank goodness we have people like this in our world

I thought she was amazing, she was asking Trump to show compassion. I unfortunately think there maybe repercussions for her, and she knew this.

Barleyfields Wed 22-Jan-25 09:35:00

I was very impressed. A brave woman.

Astitchintime Wed 22-Jan-25 09:36:26

Measured, composed, and compassionate! And I believe the Bishop of Washington spoke for all faiths.

Such a shame that Trump couldn't sit up straight - he looked like a sack of spuds as my Dad would say, manspreading with his hands dangling between his legs!

Claremont Wed 22-Jan-25 09:43:11

Some top Republicans are now calling for her to be demoted and deported.

With all those dangerous, violent criminals being released by Trump, I fear for her. I think she is prepared, and knew that they would go after her. I pray for her.

mum2three Wed 22-Jan-25 09:44:45

This is one of the big problems with Western politics.....separating religion from doing what is right for society. In Muslim countries, the Muslim teaching dictates the laws of the country. In Christian countries, it's more difficult. Being kind and compassionate is not always the best option.
On the subject of gender, I think it's very cruel to allow a person to believe that they can change their gender. The best they can expect is to be allowed to live as their chosen gender, but accept that society will still see them as their true gender.
Allowing men to participate in womens sports is absolutely ludicrous.

Someone please send her a copy of the UK Cass report. The lady vicar idiot needs educating.

As an aside, because its not the man thrust of the bishops powerful speech...

Yes, the Cass Review acknowledges that there are children and young people who identify as transgender

The Cass report is concerned not with denying those identities
but in protecting, counselling, caring for, and assisting those children as they grow older into adults to make up their minds in good time, and preventing interventions like early medication until at least young adults.

Grannynannywanny Wed 22-Jan-25 09:45:46

I wonder what Vance muttered to his wife. He made 2 attempts and she blanked him both times. She continued to look forward and listen intently to the Bishop.

MissAdventure Wed 22-Jan-25 09:46:10

How disgusting!
Demoted and deported.

It's beyond belief!

ViceVersa Wed 22-Jan-25 09:50:04

Well said, Claremont. Focusing on the trans issue is missing the whole point. We could all use a lot more compassion in this world right now.

Boz Wed 22-Jan-25 09:50:14

This interesting clash between Church and State resonates with the Past.
Henry 11 and Becket and Henry V111 with Thomas More.

And we know what happened in these cases.

Parsley3 Wed 22-Jan-25 09:54:27

Deported to New Jersey, her birthplace?

Wyllow3 Wed 22-Jan-25 09:56:31

I dont think her speech was in anyway prescriptive, tho, it called for mercy and compassion not any specific polices.

Kate1949 Wed 22-Jan-25 10:01:20

She was just asking Trump to be compassionate. That's never going to happen. He has thrown his toys out of the pram because someone dared to disagree with him. The man is hideous.

MissAdventure Wed 22-Jan-25 10:03:25

His expression showed how interested he was in the speech, I think.
