I received an email saying a direct debit of £449.99 had been set up for a didsbury dental practice, based in Manchester. I live in London. I had not arranged any such direct debit and immediately informed my bank,; not Santander. I had an account around 30 years ago, not now used. I will phone Santander as a precaution to close it.
But be aware. I hate these people.

I’m confused, why inform your bank which isn’t Santander about a DD set up for Santander? Surely Santander is your first port to call.

Inform both your bank and Santander asap and the dental practice in Didsbury - if it exists - can whistle for it's money.

To close a Santander account you have to go into a branch with proof of identity.

I’ve done all this, but feel a little angry. They told me about going into a branch but there is no branch h anywhere me!

In the above post you said that you will phone them.
That was posted today.
Now you say you have phoned them.

Whom do you hate?
Santander? Scammers? The dental practice in Didsbury?

I'm not sure how a dormant bank account could be used to set up a direct debit; presumably you have left funds in it for 30 years?

I’ve been scratching my head as well. 🤔

I managed to close my Santander account on the phone and also online as a back up. Contact your bank immediately. I also HATE these scammers who make peoples lives a misery.

I too hate scammers, however, I tend to check my bank accounts and then delete any correspondence and ignore it.

Who was the email from? That could be a scam in itself to get you to reveal bank details and to verify your email address.

Think twice before entering an OTP. Always review the full OTP message, checking it accurately describes your transaction. If it doesn't, stop and give us a call.
If you think criminals have contacted you, stop. Call us now to speak to one of our expert team.

I never respond to an email from a bank, even if it seems genuine.
