Invited to contribute by GN then stopped in one's tracks?

Last week I broke up from school and have therefore been spending more time than usual on GN for fun conversations, relaxation and good advice. Perhaps, however, I am not totally familiar with its workings.
What I would like to know is ... if I get an email alert from the GN team about a topic "we are dicussing today" and to which I would like to add further contributions, what is the etiquette if the OP suddenly wants to terminate the discussion before the day is out? I'm not trying to be difficult here, I just feel valid posts could become stifled and not allowed to run their course just because the OP has had enough.

As far as I'm aware, once a thread has been started, the op has no control over it at all.

Can you explain a bit more?

Lillie Tue 19-Jul-16 20:54:57

Yes kitty - the interesting thread about parents wanting to go on holiday without their child and assuming the GP would look after her. The OP asked for contributions to cease.
I can't seem to find it at all now.

GandTea Tue 19-Jul-16 20:57:52

IN some circumstances GNHQ will terminate a thread at the request of the OP, but it is rare.

Jane10 Tue 19-Jul-16 20:59:31

Yes its disappeared. Most odd.

kittylester Tue 19-Jul-16 21:01:20

What G&T said. It is very rare!

Lillie Tue 19-Jul-16 21:06:17

I'm disappointed that I was encouraged to contribute to a topic, invested time in it only for it to be wiped away by the very team who asked me to offer my ideas. There was nothing at all unkind in what anyone said, infact it was all sound discussion.

How very very bizarre- just gone- never seen that before either?

Elegran Tue 19-Jul-16 21:09:39

Perhaps the OP asked HQ to delete it because it revealed too much about the family?

Jane10 Tue 19-Jul-16 21:26:55

I don't take these emails as personal invitations! They're just advertising for the site.

kittylester Tue 19-Jul-16 21:38:11

Lillie, how did you invest time in the thread if it wasn't there?

Indinana Tue 19-Jul-16 21:42:57

I asked for a thread I'd started to be removed once. It wasn't because there was anything contentious among the posts, but I'd posted in haste, without paying attention to the content, it just poured out of me in a fit of pique. Only later did I realise that there was so much to identify me - and others - which could have caused untold problems within my family.

grumppa Tue 19-Jul-16 21:46:06

What is your hourly rate for investing your time in a thread, Lillie? Sounds as if we humble Gransnetters can't afford you!

Katek Tue 19-Jul-16 21:47:16

Wasn't it suggested to OP on that thread that she should ask for a post to be deleted as it named her grandson?? Maybe she just asked for whole thread to be deleted.

Cherrytree59 Tue 19-Jul-16 21:52:02

I think one of the GNetters on the thread did advise the Op to ask to have thread removed as they had revealed a bit about themselves that might be recognizable

Cherrytree59 Tue 19-Jul-16 21:54:47

X post with katek

Lillie Tue 19-Jul-16 22:15:57

Thank you katek/Cherrytree for your explanations of how deleted posts may occur in sensitive situations. I understand.
Ha ha, grumppa, I doubt whether you could afford me - but luckily I have a healthy six figure salary "because I'm worth it!"

phoenix Tue 19-Jul-16 22:23:39

hmm "last weekI broke up from school"

"But luckily I have healthy six figure salary"

jevive73 Tue 19-Jul-16 22:27:37

An overpaid head of a college perhaps

MiniMouse Tue 19-Jul-16 22:29:52

Katek Cherrytree That was me blush I suggested that the OP may like to request that the GS's name be removed because it was an unusual name, so easily identifiable. I never expected the whole thread to go!! shock

Lillie Tue 19-Jul-16 22:30:50

grin Independent sector!

Elegran Tue 19-Jul-16 22:32:16

The name was removed but the rest of the thread was still there, because the fact that the name had gone was mentioned. The thread must have vanished later, unless it is just that it has slipped off the lists somehow.

jevive73 Tue 19-Jul-16 22:34:24

Well welcome to gransnet. I find it very interesting to read various views. The referendum threads were lively!

Cherrytree59 Tue 19-Jul-16 22:48:33

Minimouse your advice was correct.
Much better that an OP and family are protected from any fall out.

Lille welcome.
why not start a thread that interests you

Indinana Tue 19-Jul-16 23:05:16

unless it is just that it has slipped off the lists somehow.
No it didn't do that. I just woke up my iMac (was using my laptop) and I was signed into GN, open on the very thread we're talking about here. It was all there to see (including Lillie's carefully crafted post wink). When I refreshed the page it disappeared leaving a message at the top saying 'thread deleted'
