New site design being tested!

We're VERY excited to announce that we are finally testing out a new site design! We've been working really hard to make sure it's easier to user and looks neater than the current format.

It is a test though and it may take a day or two to get used to. Apologies in advance for any teething problems - hopefully they'll be minimal. If you have any major problems logging in or you can't access certain things please post on this thread or email us at contactus. We'd love to have your thoughts. smile

Ana Re: hidden posts.

I'll have another try...

What I meant is that I always click on 'Last Day' and this then displays around 50 posts. In order to view all the posts from the last day I have to go down to the bottom of the page and click on 'show more' this then displays around 100 posts, including those shown in the first batch of 50.

I've called them hidden, meaning that they don't come up without accessing the 'show more' level and they disappear again once you click out of the post.

My problem is that if I read a post then click back onto the list it only displays the 50, not the 100 which is what I have been reading from.

Anyone else had this problem?

Ana Wed 23-Aug-17 12:10:12

Right, I understand you now, Oriel but as I never click on 'Last Day' it isn't a probem for me.

Charleygirl Wed 23-Aug-17 13:58:37

Sorry, no "back to top" on my PC. I have scrolled up and down to no avail.

Oriel Wed 23-Aug-17 13:59:10

OK Ana if you don't use it obviously you haven't come across the problem before.

To those that do use the 'Last Day' feature to view posts - have you had a similar experience to me and do you find it less than user friendly?

MiniMouse Wed 23-Aug-17 15:01:24

Oriel Yes! I've also found that, when you click the Show More, it doesn't just continue from where you got to, it has all the threads and you have to hunt to find what had been the last thread before clicking on Show More. IYSWIM

As far as blue names go. Many posters were horrified when they realised that GNHQ can/does allow any posts or threads to appear on FB, Twitter and the press. They then opted to have no profile (black names) in an attempt to preserve their anonymity. See the thread
'GNHQ please make it clear that these posts are open to public' (or words to that effect).

BlueBelle Wed 23-Aug-17 17:54:35

I don't think people changed thinking that their posts wouldn't show on social media but that the information given on their profile would no longer be open to the public I have removed all the information from my profile so even if someone looks there should be precious little to see !

Elegran Wed 23-Aug-17 18:14:27

It has ALWAYS been the case that anything posted on the forums was visible to anyone who was searching for any of the words or phrases that appeared in the posts, and Gransnet has that in the information and guidelines parts of the site. If you wish to try that out, put your username into Google or some other search engine and see what comes up! Or put some other username if you are ultra cautious.

Gransnet also has a Facebook page (and all the local sites have Facebook pages!) What worries some people is that references to posts have been made on the Facebook site. I think they have explained somewhere, but I've not been looking at everything for the last few days.

mcem Wed 23-Aug-17 18:21:06

Yes BlueBelle that's how I see it. Many didn't realise that GN was so open and that threads were picked up by the press or posted on FB /Twitter by GN. That seems to be why they've opted out of the profiles to lessen the chance of being identified.

M0nica Thu 24-Aug-17 07:01:34

If forums are open to anyone interested, however else would GN get members, then surely it is obvious that it is open to the pres s and anybody else.

I am almost a foundation member of GN and I can remember seeing something I said quoted in a newspaper very early on. The newspaper had clearly used GN as a source for the attitudes of older people to a particular newsworthy item at the time.

I have never posted any information on my profile. I want to be free to post what I like without being identified.

JackyB Thu 24-Aug-17 07:46:45

I only heard of Gransnet because it was mentioned on Woman's Hour. They were talking about something that was being discussed here, or they had someone from Gransnet on talking about something, can't remember exactly.

Anyone can read these threads without signing in - we surely all know that, as most people have a look round before signing up anyway.

I've removed some information from my profile, all the same, though.

Oriel Thu 24-Aug-17 09:43:27

jacky I think that everyone does realise that the threads on GN can be viewed by anyone. Certainly what I didn't realise though was that selected posts are copied by GN onto their Facebook pages.

I don't feel happy about that element. I don't have a facebook page myself and certainly don't want my posts put onto Facebook by a third party. Because of this I won't be posting anything other than just chat on GN again.

Glad you are all on the job.

EDIT button in the pipeline?

TriciaF Thu 24-Aug-17 10:40:13

I wrote on MOnica's thread (petition) that GN has reduced the number of topics of Last Day to 50 - I've just seen at the bottom of the page of last day a notice "See More".

GrannyA11i Thu 24-Aug-17 10:41:45

I've just discovered that I can't access my inbox from the local site - I get 'page not found' ?

LauraGransnet (GNHQ) Thu 24-Aug-17 11:07:12

Hi GrannyAlli - we're getting the same problem here too. We'll alert the tech team so that they can fix this.

durhamjen Thu 24-Aug-17 11:14:01

Is it not possible to ban certain papers from picking up on threads on Gransnet?

Elegran Thu 24-Aug-17 11:20:52

No, that would be "censureship of the press". This is not a closed group, it is an open forum, a social network. If that were possible, it would be possible for a group planning terrorist activities, for example, banning anyone from disclosing anything they said online.

Jalima1108 Thu 24-Aug-17 11:23:31

Why only certain papers?

Does that mean it would be fine for, eg, the Guardian to print articles written using comments from Gransnet threads and not for, eg, The Mail to do so? Or vice versa?

That is treading a very dangerous path

durhamjen Thu 24-Aug-17 11:26:56

Does HQ collect statistics to say how many times we have been mentioned in newspapers?
I have never seen GN being mentioned in the Guardian, but it seems we are in the Sun and DM quite often.

Jalima1108 Thu 24-Aug-17 11:30:52

I think there have been, I'm sure I remember more than a couple

durhamjen Sun 27-Aug-17 00:10:41

Is it possible, if you are still tweaking the site, to have the search facility give posts in date order?
I can never fathom out how it works. It always seems random to me.

Bellanonna Sun 27-Aug-17 08:22:48

Also, when I go to "I'm on" and select a thread I get page 1, whereas before I always got the latest page. I'm wondering why thus has changed.

kittylester Sun 27-Aug-17 09:24:19

I always bookmark the last post I read. This means that however I try to access it, it goes to the book mark. It can take ages on 'popular' threads and that could be what you are experiencing.

Overall, I don't really have any complaints about the upgrade.
