Hello, GNHQ here, (waving a white flag).

We need your help. As many of you have probably noticed the conversations over the past few days have been increasingly tense. The questions posed have been so interesting and worthy of debate but so often the conversations have derailed and turned into personal attacks (the veiled ones can be particularly unkind). We hate deleting threads when people have taken time and effort to contribute and it must be equally wearing for you all to wade through mean-spirited posts. We'd really like to get back to conversations that include debate/disagreement but that also show a bit of respect and consideration for other posters even if you disagree with them.
Thank you for reading. smile

Why is it that when some GNs suggest it should be possible to have a debate without resorting to insults others assume this will lead to GN becoming "bland".

I have had some very stimulating and heated conversations/disagreements without recourse to insults by either person.

WhitewaveMk2 I have just gone back to when GGumpteenth had her first post deleted there were no contentious posts ahead of her deleted one.

FlyingHandbag Wed 08-Jul-20 15:57:45

Marydoll

Not everyone, Flying handbag.
You are correct in that times are difficult and we should be kind to each other. Posters should be able to debate without resorting to vitriol, but unfortunately some posters seem to be unable to do this. ☹️

I haven't noticed you posting much, so I hope you are ok.

Hi Marydoll! I'm fine thanks, I haven't been on much as I have been on the FaceTime with relatives and I have had some socially distanced visits from relatives. Hope you're well too. X

Peardrop50 Wed 08-Jul-20 15:59:56

Lemongrove If you had been on the receiving end today of so very many personal remarks from one poster, you may feel differently.
I was the only one targeted by the poster in her many posts.
We can disagree.....in a civil way.

I am so sorry Lemongrove, I didn't see any of todays posts as I stayed in bed with my lunch to watch Rishi Sunak. I hadn't realised that the onslaught had continued but I stand by my commitment to free speech, I'm sure we're all capable of seeing who the nasty people are if the posts are left intact. I know that you are a good and reasonable person and don't deserve many of the comments directed at you by the few but I also know that you are an intelligent person quite capable of fighting your own corner and when you have had enough there are many of us who have your back.
I hope that GGumpteenth is brought back and that he/she is big enough to offer you an apology.

Reinstate GGumpteenth please

add your name if you agree, thanks

Yes: I agree that she should be reinstated.

Galaxy Wed 08-Jul-20 16:13:59

For previous experience of MN trying to get a poster reinstated is pointless.

lemongrove Wed 08-Jul-20 16:15:25

Peardrop ?thank you.
Yes, I am more than capable of fighting my corner....but that’s for debates/ arguments on politics or news usually.
When faced with a barrage of personal remarks I allow GNHQ to sort it out, because, if I retaliate on here then it does descend into a spat.....on the very thread where we are being asked to be more understanding of others.

MawB Wed 08-Jul-20 16:16:48

Gosh this thread has itself turned toxic.
Do you have any evidence that GGumpteenth has been banned? Has she told anyone she has been given a warning?
So a petition is being raised - is it considered OK. if somebody continues to personally have a go at somebody else regardless of the thread title? (As seems to be happening here)
I was not aware that it was started as an area for discussion but the irony of deleted posts on a thread dedicated to mutual respect and toleration can have escaped nobody.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Jul-20 16:19:59

galaxy you are probably right, they could never admit they were in the wrong???

But is shows strength of feeling about an issue which appears at face value unjust.

We are only getting one side of the issue.

I think too that it says a little about how GNHQ have conducted the policing of threads lately as well.

As I have previously posted.

They are not covering themselves in glory lately.

GNHQ I really think this deleting threads all the time should stop. It's ridiculous, annoying and unnecessary. As others have said, let the posts stand, so all can see the culprits. (It's OK we can take it) .

By all means give the instigator (s) a warning. If they persist, remove them for a week or two, and announce it on the thread. Why can't you do that? At least have a trial of it please.

My first time using the quote function, as I think this is a good post, worth drawing attention to. smile

Peardrop50 Wed 08-Jul-20 16:24:20

MawB Whitewave has apparently had a message from GGumpteenth to say that she has been banned.
Careful MawB my comment was deleted when all I said was 'the irony'.
I have also demonstrated that wading in without the facts is wrong, as I have done this afternoon, and have caused more distress to Lemongrove.

Lucca Wed 08-Jul-20 16:24:56

Please tell me what troll hunting means somebody as this is the reason given For one of the deleted posts.
So annoying the school fines thread being deleted as it is very topical and had interesting information from those in the know as well as arguments from both sides

AGAA4 Wed 08-Jul-20 16:27:28

This thread did deteriorate quite quickly. There seemed to me to be an attack on what I thought was a fairly innocuous post by Lemongrove.

I found it surprising on a post that was about not making personal attacks!

Reinstate GGumpteenth please

I agree. Can't understand why this is such an issue.

Galaxy Wed 08-Jul-20 16:30:53

Troll hunting is when you imply a poster is a troll. Someone who is posting info just for a reaction. So if I posted that I was having a relationship with my husbands brother and was pregnant and could people advise, I would be a troll. If someone in response said that seems an unlikely story they would be troll hunting.

lemongrove Wed 08-Jul-20 16:31:36

That’s fine Peardrop no worries? and I did think that may be the case.
Perhaps, in a strange kind of way though, this thread has highlighted the fact of the OP.... be a bit more pleasant to one another.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Jul-20 16:32:48

Isn’t that just opinion?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Jul-20 16:33:23

That was to galaxy?

GrannyGravy13 Wed 08-Jul-20 16:36:34

Just be pleasant and respectful to other posters, so what if they have differing views it doesn't mean they are a bad person and shouldn't be a reason to attack/hurl personal insults towards them.

Discuss the topics not the posters

Glorybee Wed 08-Jul-20 16:41:09

I agree with your assessment of what happened AGAA4 - ‘There seemed to me to be an attack on what I thought was a fairly innocuous post by Lemongrove. I found it surprising on a post that was about not making personal attacks!

How it started wasn’t anything more sinister or petty than that, not sure I caught all the stuff that maybe followed on from it. Someone suggested something like comments should stand, with a highlighted ‘reprimand’ from GNHQ if necessary. This deleting of comments is unhelpful and leads to confusion and supposition. Deleting threads is also very unhelpful!

Galaxy Wed 08-Jul-20 16:41:39

Well yes but the problem is if I really was having an affair with my husbands brother and people were saying what a load of nonsense it might put off posters who are genuine. No one can actually know that I am not having an affair with him. I think that's why sites like GN dont allow troll hunting, but I may be wrong. Troll hunting is more of a problem on MN I think as they get lots of posts which are obviously nonsense.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Jul-20 16:43:58

So do they allow these nonsense posts to stand? Sounds ass about face to me!

Galaxy Wed 08-Jul-20 16:46:26

Well no they ask that you report it to them so they can look at it. They dont want you troll hunting on a thread they want you to report.

WhitewaveMk2 I have just gone back to when GGumpteenth had her first post deleted there were no contentious posts ahead of her deleted one.

I didn't see the deleted posts by GGUmpteenth but have just checked and no, there did not seem to be anything contentious going on or anything at all to warrant an attack on another poster.
