Hello, GNHQ here, (waving a white flag).

We need your help. As many of you have probably noticed the conversations over the past few days have been increasingly tense. The questions posed have been so interesting and worthy of debate but so often the conversations have derailed and turned into personal attacks (the veiled ones can be particularly unkind). We hate deleting threads when people have taken time and effort to contribute and it must be equally wearing for you all to wade through mean-spirited posts. We'd really like to get back to conversations that include debate/disagreement but that also show a bit of respect and consideration for other posters even if you disagree with them.
Thank you for reading. smile

Thank you Peardrop50.

Ellianne Tue 07-Jul-20 16:35:35

I feel for you lemongrove. You don't deserve another round of this.

lemongrove Tue 07-Jul-20 16:40:01

?Thanks Ellianne let’s hope that is the last of it.

We all have different opinions and different ways of looking at things. Also, we have all had different lives and different experiences, and this influences our opinions.
We should all be able to express those opinions even when they are at odds with everyone else.
There is absolutely no need to ridicule or abuse anyone on here. Those that resort to such behaviour are simply showing what very desperate and unpleasant people they are.

Can I just pop my head over the parapet and say that I don't want Gn to become bland and boring? Anyone who doesn't like the rough and tumble of the political threads is quite at liberty to avoid them! I agree that personal attacks are unnecessary but sometimes it is worth referencing a name in one's reply in order that others can know whose opinion one is agreeing or disagreeing with ( without nastiness of course).

Whingingmom Tue 07-Jul-20 16:44:08

I agree. It’s an anxious time for many people and it is also very uncertain for most of us. Some posters do seem to be rather antagonistic in quite a personal and pointed way. Its not pleasant to read this, mean and nasty posts are not necessary. I think admin do well to try and discourage this whilst maintaining active debate and respect for differing opinions.

Grandad1943 Tue 07-Jul-20 16:45:57

Well, with the number of post being deleated in this thread which is dedicated as a topic to deleted threads, it may well be that this thread will be deleted before very long. ???

The above was a joke by the way GN. ??

lovebeigecardigans1955 Tue 07-Jul-20 16:47:07

Thank you Lara, it's possible to disagree with someone without becoming disagreeable.

lemongrove Tue 07-Jul-20 16:47:37

Yes Grandad it is certainly ironic! ?

Oldwoman70 Tue 07-Jul-20 16:48:35

No-one wants to see GN become bland and boring - I am happy with a good debate but too often the debate deteriorates into name calling. As I said before all that does is cause many to just simply stop posting so the only posters left are those that agree with each other.

Agree

I no longer post as I’m busy catching up with all the things I should have done weeks ago, but found the political threads quite unpleasant quite often anyway.

I do enjoy your posts and sense of humour Lemongrove!

I also agree with trisher that threads are being deleted to readily.

lemongrove Tue 07-Jul-20 17:06:50

Thanks Glory wine you should pop into the Argy Bargy Bar for a drink with us, in spite of the name it’s a place of great good humour and happiness.

Lucca Tue 07-Jul-20 17:08:00

What I’d like is if posters are asked for clarification of their post they actually reply? Eg. “ABC. Should be banned”
I ask “what do you mean exactly? Why shouldABC be banned ?
Then nothing.

Grandad1943 Tue 07-Jul-20 17:11:29

lemongrove, I may pop into the Argy Bargy Bar now knowing that. I always have enjoyed a bit of Argy Bargy. ??

That was another joke GN. ?

Marydoll Tue 07-Jul-20 17:16:09

Grandad, you would be eaten alive in the Argy! I hope you have your body armour on. Under no circumstances, wear a uniform. wink

On a more serious note, I despaired when I saw the thread was heading the same way as the type Lara posted about. sad

lemongrove Tue 07-Jul-20 17:16:38

Setting up a pint of pernod with a cherry in right now for you Grandad ?

Lucca Tue 07-Jul-20 17:20:44

Marydoll. True it was getting fractious but interestingly from posters from both sides of the politics spectrum (that sounds odd). So honours even !

Grandad1943 Tue 07-Jul-20 17:26:17

lemongrove, make that a Contreau and Brandy for me and a large glass of Pinot Grigio for my wife and we will be right over. ??

tickingbird Tue 07-Jul-20 18:40:31

I haven’t read this before but reading now I’m amazed that posts are being deleted on this thread! Mind boggling.

Callistemon Tue 07-Jul-20 18:41:10

FarNorth

I've seen someone say, occasionally, that their post was deleted and they don't know why.
A link to GN guidelines is not always enough.
I think it would be useful for GN to say, either in the deleted post or directly to the person, what exactly the reason was.

I have never had a post deleted, btw, so it's not sour grapes from me.

GNHQ were very nice about it, in fact almost apologetic!
Thanks Lara

surfsup Tue 07-Jul-20 19:03:28

I have only posted a few times but do lurk. There are some members who seem to 'own' this site and I find some of their intimidation and cliquey behaviour rather off-putting.

Marydoll Tue 07-Jul-20 19:17:40

surfsup, if someone posts a lot, they may seem to own the site. If someone lurks, no-one will get to know them.

You won't find any intimidation on the Good Morning thread or Soop's kitchen. Everyone is welcomed there.
