Hello, GNHQ here, (waving a white flag).

We need your help. As many of you have probably noticed the conversations over the past few days have been increasingly tense. The questions posed have been so interesting and worthy of debate but so often the conversations have derailed and turned into personal attacks (the veiled ones can be particularly unkind). We hate deleting threads when people have taken time and effort to contribute and it must be equally wearing for you all to wade through mean-spirited posts. We'd really like to get back to conversations that include debate/disagreement but that also show a bit of respect and consideration for other posters even if you disagree with them.
Thank you for reading. smile

I think it has to be ‘impressive speed’ Furret otherwise it makes a mockery of what Lara from GNHQ said in the OP.
If there is any nastiness on this thread, what hope is there for other threads?
I totally agree Whitewave ?

Furret Wed 08-Jul-20 09:24:45

WW I’ve nearly inhaled my coffee at the image your post brought to mind. I was imagining them all sitting in the same room and squabbling away.

Just read this thread. Well. Gosh. So many deleted posts! Often from the same culprits. It's surprising that such a thread has led to such apparent unpleasantness. Surely people have got the message by now.
I should say that I've noticed Twitter seems to show similar levels of argumentative posts as compared to pre lockdown levels. Seems we're all experiencing a higher level of irritability.

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Wed 08-Jul-20 09:30:48

Hi, thanks for all the responses. Political threads are going to get heated, we're never going to all agree or even likely change our political views. But they can be really interesting too. There'll always be arguments on those threads (and others) - but we just ask that they're don't turn into personal attacks.

lemongrove Wed 08-Jul-20 09:31:16

Jane .....have to say not culprits ( plural) as I have now realised that by using the quote facility it automatically means that a deleted post means that our own post will also be deleted for repeating the deleted one ( if that makes sense.)?

Maybe I'm just a tough old bird having spent some of my teaching career in places where the names I was called and the attacks made on me were real, and could, if not managed properly, become physical,, but actually compared with what is said on much social media the attacks on GN seem fairly innocuous to me. Now I can understand that some people don't want to get into debate and discussion that can get heated, and that's their privilege. I also understand that there are some posters who are looking for help and understanding and who want support and if they are using GN for that it is something that shouldn't be abused. What I can't understand is why one sort of thread should take prescedence over another, or why a whole thread has to be deleted because two posters have a spat. It's a bit like the old actions of teachers when the whole class was punished for the misbehaviour of a few. It doesn't work. Mostly because some of the people who actually cause the disruption don't recognise their responsibility and so go on to repeat the actions. I think that is evident from some of the posts on this thread.
I do by the way recognise I am at times abrasive and call people out. (That's before some step in to tell me so) But I can take any sort of criticism and will never be defined by the things said about me, or to me, on GN.

I agree with raised levels of irritability Jane10 I've noticed it in myself at the moment.

There are some 'inane' threads at times MissAdventure but I don't think HQ should be monitoring any more than they are already.

lemongrove- thanks for clarifying. I did wonder what was going on.

ladymuck Wed 08-Jul-20 09:39:52

Sorry you feel that way, GGumteenth. My own experiences have led me to conclude that there is definitely favouritism on this site. Some posters get away with things, others (newcomers) don't.
This will probably be my last post too as I have been threatened with eviction.
I shall continue to lurk but not contribute.

Glad GNHQ has raised this issue. I have noticed this unpleasant trend from some posters and it sometimes seems that the people concerned simply must have the last word - they cannot help themselves! Then they become nasty to other people who may not have the same opinion as them.

Then the thread becomes all about their argument and the original post becomes derailed and unhelpful to the OP.

I hardly ever post now but I used to like a good debate/exchange of opinions but without nasty snide comments.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 08-Jul-20 09:46:18

I am really sorry to see that a thread asking people to be kind and refrain from personal insults has had to delete so many posts.

My opinion has always been leave the posts up, as they say far more about the poster than the recipient of the attack.

I would not post anything that I would not say face to face

Grandad1943 Wed 08-Jul-20 09:50:11

Well, the way this thread is going now for the second day could make it an early entry for many into the Argy Bargy bar as many forum members seek liquid solace from the thread. ?

So, get pouring Lemongrove it looks as if you are going to be Busy. ??

I had better shut up or I will finish up getting myself banned here. ??

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Jul-20 09:54:27

Blimey if I was ggteenth I would begin to feel got at!

Are the posts on automatic delete or are they really so terrible?

Sometimes I think that GNHQ also needs a bit of introspection and better judgement.

trisher Wed 08-Jul-20 09:56:45

ladymuck it's not just newcomers, the rationale behind the deletion of posts on GN is a deep dark secret. We did once have a debate about why it is acceptable to call people communists but call someone a fascist and the post gets deleted!

trisher Wed 08-Jul-20 09:59:14

I read the one that has just gone WWMk2 I'm still struggling to remember what was so offensive. I wish I'd taken more notice of it now!

TwoWolves Wed 08-Jul-20 09:59:48

I haven't been reading all the posts recently, but I'm puzzled as to why this has come up now when IMO the posts this time last year (Brexit) were far more tense and vitriolic.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 08-Jul-20 10:00:31

P.S. I have not read any of the deleted posts on this thread as I only caught up with it about 15 minutes ago

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Jul-20 10:02:49

twowolves I think GNHQ have been on a course?

TwoWolves Wed 08-Jul-20 10:06:18

That must be it, WWMk" smile

lemongrove Wed 08-Jul-20 10:07:19

Whitewave the deleted posts were all aimed at me.Every single one.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 08-Jul-20 10:11:28

Sorry to hear that Lemongrove

Callistemon Wed 08-Jul-20 10:14:24

Pedants’ corner can get a bit heated!

grin

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Jul-20 10:15:22

lemon could you not reply to sort the situation out?

It will hopefully stop all the automatic pilot zapping then, which seem a tad peculiar.

GCHQ can’t act as arbiters but zapping is sometimes a heavy handed tool I think.

Grandad1943 Wed 08-Jul-20 10:17:27

I do recall that at the height of the Brexit debate late last year there was a forum member who called for the start of a "Civil War" throughout Britain in a post. That statement was not deleted?

I thought that non-action brought GN to a very low point that will in all probability never be beaten?
