Private messages -are they?

I am extremely concerned that Private Messages I have sent to some members have been removed ostensibly “at user’s request”.
This is SIMPLY NOT TRUE.
I understood PMs were precisely that, ie “private” so nobody has the right to read, let alone delete them although I realise they do disappear if a member leaves GN.
I wonder if GNHQ would care to comment?

Hello! Just to clarify again, if a user deletes their account or messages, then all messages in the chain are removed.
Likewise, if a poster de-registers or asks us to delete all her data, PMs between herself and other posters are deleted from our servers too. Hope that helps. smile

Thanks Lara, could you also clarify whether you can actually read our PMs. Thank you.

Hi Kitty, we can access PMs, but we don't - unless they're reported to us as spam, or if there's a safeguarding issue. We'd have no reason at all to randomly look at genuine users' PMs. We wouldn't want to do that and nor would we have the time, to be honest. smile
It is also worth knowing that lots of users delete their PMs once they've been read as a matter of course and that will also delete it from your inbox, so having deleted messages these days is pretty normal and doesn't mean there's anything dodgy going on at all. It's likely that the person who sent it to you deleted it. And of course you can do that with all your messages, too, if you don't want them hanging around.

Is there a limit to the amount of pms we can store?

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 20-Oct-20 22:44:50

Hi Kitty, sorry we missed this question earlier. I don't think there is a limit but I'll do some investigating and get back to you if that's not the case.
