Hi all

We think that it'd be good for us to get to know each other a bit more.

We at GNHQ are here to moderate the site, look after our users and ensure that Gransnet is an inclusive and supportive community. We're post-moderated, which means that we rely on reports to let us know what's going on. Our aim is to respond to every query we receive, so please don't be afraid to get in touch.

We're also keen to listen to feedback about site functionality, so tell us what you think - we'll always pass feedback on to the relevant team(s) for discussion, with the promise of making Gransnet better and more efficient for all users. If you've got any ideas for improvement then please share them below. Changes at the back end of the site do take time, but we're more than happy to keep you updated during the process.

Please feel free to introduce yourselves by replying below (or send us a hello privately via email/report if you prefer).

P.S Every time you hit the report button, an angel gets its wings (or a troll gets booted off site). <repeatedly clicks report button>

I know a bit about writing code for websites and can see that the mobile site has been coded differently compared to the desktop site as regards the background colour for posts from the original poster so let's hope the staff responsible for the back end will fix this to make the two versions consistent.

If you are using a desktop, you might like to right click on some content and select Inspect to look at the very complex code that sits behind even the simplest web page. For mobile users you will need to check some browser settings to be able to Inspect web elements.

I wouldn't mind agree and disagree buttons with a counter beside and with the proviso that the end user can hide them should they wish. Again, as said upthread but in a different context, it could save a lot of repetition.

I rather like the buttons on another discussion forum which offer the options to click: educational, interesting, funny, agreed, disagree and love These are good indicators of thread traffic compared to the number of actual posts in response.

Another one here requesting that Games be put in a separate category please.

And another one.

BlueBelle
I could not have put it better. Same old, same old. Blah blah blah.

Charlygirl
Lots of us are aware of your situation.

Pittcity Fri 06-Aug-21 08:29:23

Reading through this thread I can see that each of us approaches GN from a different direction.

Maybe GNHQ needs a total rethink to simplify the site. Making it work in the same way whatever device we use would be a start.

Shandy57 Fri 06-Aug-21 09:03:05

I'm interested to see so many references to games, I've never noticed them being intrusive.

Silverbridge Fri 06-Aug-21 09:15:36

Mumset with its horrible Charlie’s Angels weaponising babies logo and slogan by parents for parents. Huh? Men are parents too. The Granset logo looks like a Victorian silhouette and makes the site look old-fashioned and tired. Somewhere in the small print it does say the site isn’t only for grandparents (and women for that matter) but you’d be hardpressed from the look and feel of it to think it’s that welcoming or interesting to a wider range of participants. I think GN needs a huge revamp in order to bring it up-to-date, make it inclusive and deal with all the niggling issues that have already been mentioned.

PippaZ Fri 06-Aug-21 09:18:36

I came on to say I would prefer "agree" "disagree" with a counter, rather than like and dislike although I would like to be able to praise, say, a piece of craft rather than "agree".

Silverbridge's suggestion for extra buttons seem to cover the different types of thread really well.

Doodledog Fri 06-Aug-21 09:25:34

I agree that a makeover would be good, to make the site appeal to 'over 50s' rather than 'grans'.

muse Fri 06-Aug-21 10:14:03

Thank you LilyGransnet. I agree with some already mentioned but will state them again.

- Edit facility please.
- OP comments in green throughout the thread.
- To be able to close my OP or turn off more comments being made.
- Agree/disagree counter
- To keep all the pms I send. They can be deleted by others if part of a reply. I've asked GNHQ about this and was told it was because of GDPR. Having looked into the regulations, I find nothing to justify this reason. I don't want to loose pms.
- clearer talk guidelines about warnings and bans. Nothing there at all currently.
- stop life time bans.

Curlywhirly Fri 06-Aug-21 11:03:33

1. Games to have their own category.
2. Search facility that actually works.
3. Edit button - on FB it is easy to edit your own post, and as far as I know, only the poster can edit the post, so no chance of it being edited/abused by others.

Over a year ago I was placed on the norty step and I am on my final warning. This is for life I believe-surely that is unfair because if I was in prison there would be time off for good behaviour. I doubt if I am alone.

That's shocking, Charleygirl. shock

toscalily Fri 06-Aug-21 11:14:20

LilyGransnet, thank you for asking but we do seem to have this request for ideas & feedback on a regular basis, and although you say that "Changes at the back end of the site do take time" surely on such a public, well used site it is about "time" some of these requests could & should be implemented.

1. Separate games section, sometimes when logging on it seems there is little else but games.
2. Highlight OP in green through the thread.
3. Edit facility, even if only immediately after posting as it is very easy to make typos or suffer with autocorrect bloopers.

What’s even worse is the fact that the poster who did the damage with her/his wooden spoon disappeared in a puff of smoke ?

FarNorth

If so, BlueBelle, it's really not working.
I expect a box gets ticked somewhere, though. Job done.

It’s sooo patronising envy

Re the ‘Active List’ not being in order.
I raised this in a thread a while ago, and the management denied that it was actually happening.
It must be an error

GillT57 Sun 08-Aug-21 13:08:56

Another no for like/dislike facility. Great while flicking through FB, but it would stifle conversation on GN and lead to potential cliques supporting their 'queen' without having to stick their head over the parapet. Also could lead to members posting bland stuff for 'likes'.

Charleygirl5 Sun 08-Aug-21 13:08:58

MerylStreep that poor soul stated he/she had mental health problems hence the kid gloves! Never mind how I felt!

Galaxy Sun 08-Aug-21 13:09:27

I think it's a bit slow to update but I think it is in order of posting. Might depend on your device I suppose.

Doodledog Sun 08-Aug-21 13:10:27

That (the active list) thing is maddening. I didn't realise that it was FUBAR for a while, and assumed that threads I was reading had just dropped off the page for lack of posts, when in fact they had moved on a lot. The alternative of using 'I'm on' instead tends to result in my staying on two or three threads all evening, so that's not ideal either.

It may explain what some people complain about, too - the fact that the same voices appear on threads about certain subjects every time.

Galaxy

No, *Galaxy, that’s how it used to be when it was working.
It’s definitely not working now, and hasn’t for some time.

Sometimes you can post on a thread, and it doesn’t show up at all in the active list.

I’ve somehow managed to get over it smile but it amuses me that the management just denied that it was actually happening!

I should be grateful that they responded I suppose…

Hi Charley, and the fact that they were banned for trolling didn’t make a blind bit of difference either. Ridiculous

BlueBelle Sun 08-Aug-21 13:19:27

Well this has meandered along and gone nowhere as usual

Charleygirl5 Sun 08-Aug-21 13:21:49

FannyCornforth I must stop being so rude and aggressive-the story of my life it would appear.

GillT57 Sun 08-Aug-21 13:22:15

I have never been in the situation, but could the disciplinary procedure be a bit more flexible? I am not sure of the ins and outs but perhaps if someone is given a first official warning, and then they don't 're-offend' the first warning is wiped and they are back at zero? I don't have any problems with discipline over racism, homophobia, bullying etc., but I do wonder if sometimes people are left very feeling unable to comment truthfully for fear of being reported for the final time.

MerylStreep Sun 08-Aug-21 13:24:38

Charleygirl
poor soul my arse.
It was obvious from the get go what it’s game was.
