Stopping further additions to thread

(71 Posts)

Is there a way of admin preventing further comments being added to a thread, without deleting it? (Apart from when it reaches 1000 posts).

Some threads become completely repetitive and further comments are pointless. Other cases are when OP posts and interesting question but never comes back. Others get revived, sometimes by spammers, after years.
In lots of comment sections of online newspapers etc, comments are closed after a certain time, though you can still read the ones posted.

No. They won’t do it

Hi @Farmor15
Unfortunately there isn't at the moment.
Locking a thread would be a really useful feature - it's on the list for future improvements.

Farmor15 Wed 08-Sept-21 18:26:17

Thanks Michael - glad it's being considered at least.

Grannybags Wed 08-Sept-21 18:55:40

It must be a long list by now...

FannyCornforth Wed 08-Sept-21 19:02:56

Tbh I’d rather that they didn’t do it

FannyCornforth Wed 08-Sept-21 19:03:26

Ha ha! But then I’m just a pita!

nanaK54 Wed 08-Sept-21 19:13:58

Hmmm - who would decide that a thread should 'close', GNHQ or an opening poster who didn't like the direction that his/her thread had taken?

Ilovecheese Wed 08-Sept-21 19:21:59

Is this a big problem?
I would also ask the same question as nanaK54

No, I don’t think it is.
It might be keeping others awake, who knows

Shinamae Wed 08-Sept-21 20:06:13

Doesn’t bother me in the slightest

kittylester Wed 08-Sept-21 20:09:50

I'm in the leave it be camp. A better facility would be if threads that haven't been posted on for, say, two years, cannot be resurrected.

JaneJudge Wed 08-Sept-21 20:13:06

I think there should be a thread gaol

Callistemon Wed 08-Sept-21 20:17:14

I can often kill a thread for some reason.

grin

nanaK54 - I'd suggest that if either the OP or a number of GNetters reported the thread, moderators could have a look and see if there was any point in allowing further posts, without deleting the whole thread.

Yes, that's a good point

I can do that too Calli seems it is my special skill.
Sometimes I look at ‘I’m on’ and there I am, the last name on every thread.
Killed stone dead!

Urmstongran Wed 08-Sept-21 20:57:04

Oh Calli and Laura that did make me laugh!! Stellar comments.
??

Kamiso Wed 08-Sept-21 21:02:54

I thought it was only me who ended up having the final word!

LauraNorder Wed 08-Sept-21 21:12:30

No Kamiso it’s me

Urmstongran Wed 08-Sept-21 21:15:50

Or me? ?

There is one thread I would dearly love to see no longer on active for several reasons, one of them very personal.
I don’t suppose it would find favour with the powers that be but it would perhaps help me if I could explain my feelings and reasoning to HQ.
Does anyone else have similar feelings about particular threads?

Callistemon Wed 08-Sept-21 22:08:35

I think there's a way of hiding threads, annsixty but I don't know how.
Someone else may know how to do this.

SpringyChicken Wed 08-Sept-21 23:03:10

Annsixty, you need to be on the mobile site to hide discussions. You can visit the mobile site from you laptop, tablet or computer ( it is not exclusive to mobile phones).

To do this,
1. Scroll down to the very bottom of this page and click on "View mobile site".

2. On the page that then appears, look to the top right. There is an orange box marked "Inbox". Immediately below that you will see a red/purple circle with a downward arrow. Click on it.

3. You will be offered "Hide this discussion". Click it.

Open another discussion you wish to hide, then follow steps 2 and 3.

4. Finally, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "View desktop site" to return to the desktop site.
