Stopping further additions to thread

(72 Posts)

Is there a way of admin preventing further comments being added to a thread, without deleting it? (Apart from when it reaches 1000 posts).

Some threads become completely repetitive and further comments are pointless. Other cases are when OP posts and interesting question but never comes back. Others get revived, sometimes by spammers, after years.
In lots of comment sections of online newspapers etc, comments are closed after a certain time, though you can still read the ones posted.

I can often kill a thread for some reason.

grin

I can do that too Calli seems it is my special skill.
Sometimes I look at ‘I’m on’ and there I am, the last name on every thread.
Killed stone dead!

And here's me thinking I was the kiss of death on most threads I post on - phew !! grin

Me too. I don't feel so bad now.

LauraNorder Thu 09-Sept-21 10:25:49

Lucca ‘I would have kicked him out’.
Just a short sentence.

Hilarious

Galaxy Thu 09-Sept-21 09:03:33

Emojis can be really aggressivegrin.

FannyCornforth Thu 09-Sept-21 09:03:06

Yes, the general gist was ‘eugh, what are you doing that for?’

JaneJudge Thu 09-Sept-21 09:00:50

They certainly didn't channel Garfield on the lasagne thread

Lucca Thu 09-Sept-21 08:58:00

Oh it was! Plus rather rude

FannyCornforth Thu 09-Sept-21 08:35:28

Or this, in lieu of an actual argument; opinion; or indeed words
?????

Re my unhelpful and irrelevant comment offence; if I remember correctly Lucca, your ‘lasagne’ thread was an absolute barnstorming masterclass of this

Lucca Thu 09-Sept-21 08:31:07

A very long sentence for the “ I have far better things to do “ or “I have a life so I’m not discussing this any more “ comments

dragonfly46 Thu 09-Sept-21 08:29:43

I would find it draconian. Interesting HQ are looking into doing this but not taking up any of the other suggestions we made.

LullyDully Thu 09-Sept-21 08:25:13

I just don't read any thing that is rambling too much, life is too short. The problem as I see it is that if GN cut any thread short there will be " hell to pay" by some. It shouldn't be their choice.

FannyCornforth Thu 09-Sept-21 08:17:55

Re the gaol.
Another thread offence: posting an irrelevant, deeply boring and unhelpful message

Thread about cats?
‘I’ve never had a cat’

Thread about styling curly hair?
‘I straighten mine! Why don’t you?’

Thread about upsetting argument with DIL?
‘Fortunately I’ve never had a problem with my dil. We’re like sisters smile

Lucca Thu 09-Sept-21 06:57:10

Actually so do I….but the gaol thing is fun

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Sept-21 06:53:45

Why not just ignore threads. I do find this suggestion peculiar.

Lucca Thu 09-Sept-21 06:28:14

JaneJudge

I think there should be a thread gaol

A gransnet gaol ! Like it.
Three years for not ever reading the thread.
Eg OP asks what they should do about Problem A
Various posters suggest seeing the CAB.
OP returns and say Ta very much I’ve been to the CAB and the problem has been solved.
Then follow pages of comments advising OP to consult the CAB.

Any other misdemeanours requiring gaol ?

(Maybe writing “I would of kicked him out “ instead of “I would have kicked him out”?). Just a short sentence probably.

nanna8 Thu 09-Sept-21 01:06:32

I guess with the further additions you could always totally ignore that thread. If you only look at recent ones they disappear pretty quickly anyway. Thanks SC for the ‘tip’.

Callistemon Wed 08-Sept-21 23:15:36

I found it on the mobile site under 'Customise'

Thank you again.

Callistemon Wed 08-Sept-21 23:12:24

It worked but I don't know how to find that thread again.
It wasn't important, a meetup in an area far from me.
Has it gone forever?

Callistemon Wed 08-Sept-21 23:04:41

Thanks SpringyChicken

I'm going to try that too

SpringyChicken Wed 08-Sept-21 23:03:10

Annsixty, you need to be on the mobile site to hide discussions. You can visit the mobile site from you laptop, tablet or computer ( it is not exclusive to mobile phones).

To do this,
1. Scroll down to the very bottom of this page and click on "View mobile site".

2. On the page that then appears, look to the top right. There is an orange box marked "Inbox". Immediately below that you will see a red/purple circle with a downward arrow. Click on it.

3. You will be offered "Hide this discussion". Click it.

Open another discussion you wish to hide, then follow steps 2 and 3.

4. Finally, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "View desktop site" to return to the desktop site.

Callistemon Wed 08-Sept-21 22:08:35

I think there's a way of hiding threads, annsixty but I don't know how.
Someone else may know how to do this.

annsixty Wed 08-Sept-21 21:50:51

There is one thread I would dearly love to see no longer on active for several reasons, one of them very personal.
I don’t suppose it would find favour with the powers that be but it would perhaps help me if I could explain my feelings and reasoning to HQ.
Does anyone else have similar feelings about particular threads?
