Site stuff

Does this happen to anyone else?

I posted on the decluttering page at 6.52am this morning.
It is not showing up on Active at all.

No great post! So not exactly a big issue.

I see other GNs complain too from time to time about posts going down the list of Active.
It has happened to me on occasion.

But I have never had a post disappear before on Active.

Not sure this needs to be in Site stuff really. But wasnt sure where else to post.

I use Active Topics to view the site, and yes, I often find that posts and threads slip from the page. It's annoying, as the button to show more topics doesn't work, and most of the time I have no idea which forum the thread was in so I can find it.

It's one of those random glitches that are so annoying, such as the quote button only working on my phone about 30% of the time.

Oh dear. Didnt realise there are glitches exactly.
I did notice that some posts[not meaning necessarily mine]seemed to make the page go down the active list. On the more large threads.

Could it be algorithims rather than glitches? Not that I know much about that sort of thing.

As others may know, I have been on and on and on about this for ages.

There are three separate threads in site stuff about it. Only one started by me.
It’s been a problem for over two years, at least.

I actually emailed Mumsnet about it around a month ago.
The thanked me, said that it must be a glitch in the algorithm and that they see what they could do.
It’s still happening.
But, it’s progress - when I’ve bought it up before, I don’t think that whoever was dealing with it understood what the problem was.

I’ve noticed on The Hip & Knee Replacement thread (which is invisible more often than not) that three is the magic number; as in it takes three posts in quick succession to get the thread into the Active List.

I know that many people say that it doesn’t really matter, but threads such as those are a really helpful resource; and the more ‘casual’ GNetter who was on their replacement ‘journey’ might not even know that it exists.

(It’s the third Hip & Knee thread, and to add insult to injury, it also happened with the second one
🙄 )

Oh. Didnt realise there is a big problem.

Not sure I have even seen a Hip and Knee thread.
[I like to read that sort of thing even if I dont contribute].

Sounds like to me, and I could be way off, that threads that get large, get less priority on the Active List, if you see what I mean?

But you are saying it is actually worse than that.
It takes 3 posts in quick succession on the Hips and Knees, for something to appear at all.

Makes me wonder if, when a thread keeps reappearing[the decluttering one is on about 400 posts] and has gone on for a couple of months, the GN system deliberately suppresses threads like that in some way.

I couldn't even find decluttering yesterday!

Juliet27 Thu 04-May-23 10:14:39

Three times I’ve tried adding a post to a thread and it’s just vanished into the ether.

aggie Thu 04-May-23 10:16:41

The Active posts are just that , contents irrelevant ,
if no one answers it is superseded by posts that come in at the time
If you look at the time on each post , there could be a dozen people posting at the same time , thus taking the top spots

FannyCornforth Thu 04-May-23 10:18:47

No aggie. You have just explained how it is supposed to work.

But it doesn’t.
It is malfunctioning.
It has been malfunctioning for years.

FannyCornforth Thu 04-May-23 10:21:00

I have checked the times on threads in the list, and sometimes one that hasn’t been posted on for six hours can be higher up then one that has just that second been posted on.
And some don’t appear at all.
Sorry, I’m repeating myself. Again.

FannyCornforth Thu 04-May-23 10:37:46

For example this thread it higher on the list now (last posted 10.21) than the Camilla one (last posted 10.35)
Just a quick example

aggie Thu 04-May-23 10:56:51

Are you looking at the time of the last post FannyC ? Not the starting post , I follow the hip and knees post and it does seem to dissapear !

Farmor15 Thu 04-May-23 11:23:17

I always use 'last day' rather than 'Active '. That way I see all threads with posts on them.

Farmor15 Thu 04-May-23 11:24:40

At least I think I see all the posts - they are displayed in time order.

FannyCornforth Thu 04-May-23 11:30:16

Yes.

This is a good idea. I might follow you lead, thanks.

If you look on the Hip & Kned thread, you will see me email to HQ and their reply.
I will post on it now to see what happens.
Sod’s Law says it will bound straight to the top of Active! grin

FannyCornforth Thu 04-May-23 11:34:51

Here we are. I have just posted, and Hip & Knee is nowhere on the Active List

aggie Thu 04-May-23 11:48:21

I found it and posted , but I don’t know how to do a screen shot !

FannyCornforth Thu 04-May-23 11:53:59

Don’t worry - I’ve just seen.
The fact is, there could be lots of threads that don’t even get seen.
I know that there was a photograph thread that was mainly invisible.
Unless you are ‘on’ some threads you don’t get to see them

nanna8 Thu 04-May-23 11:57:21

I’ve had one or two posts disappear ,too. I assumed someone had had them removed but perhaps not. With the exception of a cartoon about birds (tits) and Harry I don’t think there was anything offensive about them.

Farmor15 Thu 04-May-23 12:23:39

There's also the 'last hour' option which can be useful if you've been checking Gransnet frequently and only want to see recent posts.

FannyCornforth Thu 04-May-23 12:47:18

It does differ on the Mobile Site.
I think the Active List and I’m On are the only options.
The Last Hour function does sound handy

Oopsadaisy1 Thu 04-May-23 12:52:37

On my iPad I have

‘last day’

Active

I’m on (anything I’ve posted on)

Watching

Unanswered

Last hour

All handy but I use ‘last day’ the most.

FannyCornforth Thu 04-May-23 12:56:11

Oops that’s the Desk Top Site then
